Terraria: How to Get the Wisp in a Bottle

The Wisp in a Bottle is a Hardmode, post-Plantera light pet that summons a floating cyan Wisp to light the area around you. It only comes from three specific enemies, and only after you have progressed deep into the game, which is why so many players treat it as one of Terraria’s rarest pets.

Quick answer: Defeat Plantera, then farm Blue Armored Bones, Hell Armored Bones, or Rusty Armored Bones inside the Dungeon. Each has a 0.25% drop chance in Classic and about 0.5% in Expert and Master. Grind until one drops the Wisp in a Bottle.

Requirements before the drop can appear

The armored bone enemies that drop this pet only spawn in the Dungeon once you have reached the correct point in progression. Two conditions have to be met first.

  • You must have defeated Skeletron to open access to the Dungeon.
  • You must have defeated Plantera. This changes the Dungeon, raising enemy spawn rates and introducing the tougher armored bone enemies that carry the drop.

Without a Plantera kill, Blue Armored Bones, Hell Armored Bones, and Rusty Armored Bones will not appear, so the Wisp in a Bottle simply cannot drop. Reaching Plantera means clearing the earlier gates first, including the Wall of Flesh to enter Hardmode and the mechanical bosses.

Which enemies drop the Wisp in a Bottle

All three armored bone variants share the same low drop rate. It does not matter which one you farm, so kill whichever appears most in your Dungeon.

EnemyClassic drop rateExpert / Master drop rate
Blue Armored Bones0.25% (1 in 400)~0.5%
Hell Armored Bones0.25% (1 in 400)~0.5%
Rusty Armored Bones0.25% (1 in 400)~0.5%

Because the rate is so low, expect a long grind. There is no crafting recipe or alternative source, so patience is the only path.

How to farm it efficiently

Enter the post-Plantera Dungeon and locate rooms where the armored bone enemies spawn frequently. Higher spawn density means more chances at the drop per minute.

Drink a Battle Potion to increase enemy spawn rates while you clear rooms. Combining it with a strong weapon lets you cycle through enemies faster.
Kill Blue Armored Bones, Hell Armored Bones, and Rusty Armored Bones on repeat. Keep clearing waves and let respawns fill back in, refreshing your Battle Potion as it runs out.
Watch your pickups. When the drop finally lands, the Wisp in a Bottle will appear as loot from a defeated enemy and go straight into your inventory.

How to confirm you got it

The Wisp in a Bottle carries a yellow rarity and the tooltip “Summons a Wisp to provide light.” Using it grants the Wisp buff, described as “A wisp is following you,” and a glowing skull-like light source appears above your head.

Pulling a rare item from a post-Plantera Dungeon enemy also unlocks the Robbing the Grave achievement, described as obtaining a rare treasure from a difficult monster in the Dungeon. Seeing that pop is a reliable confirmation that your grind paid off.

Using the Wisp once you have it

The Wisp emits bright cyan light and keeps pace with you better than most light pets. It floats above your head by default and can be steered with the movement keys, which makes it useful for exploring dark caves.

  • Use the up and down keys to move it vertically. Jumping and falling do not redirect it.
  • If it drifts into the blocks ahead and leaves you in the dark, stand still and it returns to you.
  • Grappling a block lets you freely aim the Wisp while staying in place.
  • It travels at 26 mph normally and 61 mph when spinning to catch up. If you move faster than 61 mph, it teleports to you.
  • On Console it is controlled with the right joystick, and on Mobile with the left joystick.

One small quirk stands out. Directing the Wisp into a Cloud Block makes it glow much brighter than normal, which is handy if you want a stronger light source in a fixed spot. Dye applied to the Wisp changes only its look, not the amount or color of light it gives off.
