Research Points (RP) are the core progression currency in Industrialist, and the fastest way to pile them up is to power Research Stations, feed them high-multiplier items, and stay under the soft cap that quietly throttles your output. The trick is not building more stations forever. It is understanding how the cap scales and which processed materials pay out the most per second.
Quick answer: Build Research Station 2, feed it a high-multiplier item such as Copper Plate (6x) or Coke Fuel (9x), and keep spending RP in the Research menu so your total stays below the station’s effective cap. That combination keeps RP/s at full rate instead of dropping to zero.

How the RP soft cap works
Research Stations do not let you AFK farm infinite RP. Each active station raises an effective RP cap, and once your total accumulated RP passes that number, production slows to almost nothing. When every station is over its threshold, the Research Tracking Panel throws up a red warning that research progress is slowing down significantly because all stations are above their cap.
The Research Tracking Panel is your main readout. Placed from the Build menu under the Misc category for $700, it shows how many stations are active, your current RP/s, and the line labeled as the effective RP cap or “MAX RP BEFORE RP/S IS NEARLY ZERO.” Power it with any source, such as a Wind Turbine 1, and connect the power node so it starts reporting.
Note: The cap is about your total RP balance, not a timer. If your balance sits above the cap, output stalls even with perfectly powered stations.

Research Station 1 costs $75 from the Build menu and produces RP whenever it is powered. A single powered station generates +1.00 RP/s with an effective cap around 200 RP. Adding more stations helps, but each extra unit contributes less than the last.
| Active Station 1 units | RP/s | Effective RP cap |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | +1.00 | 200 RP |
| 2 | +1.41 | 317 RP |
| 3 | +1.73 | 400 RP |
| 10 | +3.16 | ~2,080 RP |
The second station only adds about +0.41 RP/s, and the third adds roughly +0.32 RP/s. Stacking ten in two rows of five, each powered by its own Wind Turbine 1, pushes the cap past 2,000 RP but still tops out at just over 3 RP/s. Station 1 is fine for the early game, yet it hits a wall quickly.

Research Station 2 is the real RP farm
Research Station 2 changes the math. It consumes 0.5 units per second of any solid item, and its cap depends entirely on how many Station 2 units are active. Better still, the item you feed it applies an RP multiplier, so processed materials generate far more than raw ore. A single fed and powered Station 2 already produces +2.00 RP/s with a cap around 2,000 RP, and the number climbs fast once you use high-multiplier inputs.
Unlock it first. Research Station 2 sits in the Production tree for 750 RP and becomes available after the relevant extraction research. Once unlocked, it costs $5,000 in the Build menu under Tier II. Its power node needs up to 25kMF, and its item pipe holds up to 4 units.
Item multipliers to check in the Recipes menu
Open the Recipes menu and search an item to see its RP multiplier before you commit to a production line. The difference between raw ore and a refined product is huge.
| Item | RP multiplier |
|---|---|
| Copper Ingot | 1.5x |
| Copper Plate | 6x |
| Iron Ingot | 1x |
| Iron Plate | 1x |
| Iron Coil | 4x |
| Coke Fuel | 9x |
Feeding raw copper works, but Copper Plate multiplies output sixfold for the same 0.5 units per second. Coke Fuel at 9x and Iron Coil at 4x are strong alternatives depending on which resources you have unlocked. Pick the highest multiplier you can automate reliably.

Best method: automated Copper Plate feed into Research Station 2
The most efficient mid-game farm turns raw copper into Copper Plates and pipes them straight into Research Station 2 for the 6x multiplier. Build the line in this order.
For a simpler starter version, five Copper Drills piped straight into Research Station 2 through cheap Pipe Sections ($2 each), backed by a Rusty Battery and three Wind Turbine 1 units, already reports +2.00 RP/s and lifts the cap past 6,000 RP. Upgrading that raw feed to Copper Plates is what pushes RP/s well beyond the basic line.

Spend RP to bypass the cap and keep farming
Even a perfect factory stalls if your RP balance climbs above the cap. The fix is to spend points. Open the Research menu and unlock technologies to drop your total below the threshold, and production instantly resumes at full rate.
As an example, buying MV Poles (1,000 RP) in the Energy tab and Advanced Copper Extraction (350 RP) in the Production tab can knock a balance down to double digits. The moment you do, the tracking panel flips a stalled station back to +1.00 RP/s or higher. Treat spending as part of the loop, not a separate task.
Tip: Keep a running shopping list of research you actually want. Every purchase serves double duty by advancing your tech tree and resetting the soft cap so your farm never idles.

How to confirm the farm is working
The Research Tracking Panel is your proof. A working setup shows a positive RP/s next to the active station count, for example RESEARCH STATION TIER 2 ACTIVE: 1 (+2.00 RP/s), and a MAX RP line comfortably above your current balance. A powered Research Station glows blue once it is running.
If RP/s reads 0.00, check these causes in order. Each one stops production for a specific reason.
- Your total RP is above the station’s effective cap. Spend points in the Research menu to drop below it.
- A station is not powered. Confirm the power node is connected and the power source is running.
- Research Station 2 is not being supplied. Check that items are actually reaching the input pipe, since it needs 0.5 units per second to run.
Once the panel shows a healthy RP/s and a cap that stays ahead of your balance, the farm is doing its job. From there, scaling comes down to pushing higher multipliers such as Coke Fuel and keeping the spend loop going so your stations never sit idle above their cap.
