Practical Basketball on Roblox plays nothing like the arcade hoops games you may be used to. Shots run on a timing meter, movement chains together through real dribble inputs, and defense punishes anyone who spams sprint. The gap between a new player and a confident one comes down to knowing the controls and locking in your shot timing before you ever queue for a match.
Quick answer: Open the “Learn Practical Basketball” section, finish all six tutorials to learn the moves and earn Coins, then practice your shooting timing until you release the meter in the green zone. Layups (Move + E) are the most reliable way to score early.
Practical Basketball controls (PC keyboard)
Learning the inputs is the fastest way to stop feeling slow on the court. Movement is W, A, S, D, and Shift sprints. Here are the core actions you use every possession.
| Action | Input |
|---|---|
| Shoot | Hold E |
| Layup | Move + E |
| Dunk | Hold Space |
| Block | Shift + Space |
| Guard | Hold G |
| Steal | R |
| Hook Shot | G |
| Gather | Double-tap G |
| Switch Ball Hand | H |
| Drop Ball | P |
| Change Camera | L |
Passing controls
| Pass | Input |
|---|---|
| One-Handed Pass | 1 |
| Bounce Pass | Double-tap 1 |
| Directional Pass | R |
| Flashy Pass | Shift + 1 |
| Fake Pass | Hold Q + 1 |
| Lob Pass | Hold T + E |
Dribble moves
The crossover is your foundation. When the ball is in your right hand you flick to cross it left, and vice versa. Master two moves first before trying to chain everything together.
| Move | Input |
|---|---|
| Crossover | C or Z (depends on ball hand) |
| Double Crossover | Double-tap C or Z |
| Tween | Double-tap C or Z with ball in opposite hand |
| Behind the Back | Z+X or C+X |
| Double Behind the Back | X+C or X+Z |
| Spin Move | Z+X+C |
| Half Spin | V |
| Step Back | X |
| Snatch Back | Double-tap X |
| Combo Dribble | V+V |
| Breakdown Move | V+Z or V+C |
Tip: Practice these in free play first. Once your fingers remember the inputs, you start beating defenders without thinking about the keys.

Finish the six practice tutorials first
The “Learn Practical Basketball” section holds six tutorials that walk you through every core skill. Completing them teaches the moves and rewards Coins, so it is worth clearing all of them before ranked play. You will need to keep attempting each move until you land a perfect hoop with it.
- Shooting
- Passing
- Dribbling
- Finishing
- Defense
- Post

Nail your shooting timing
Shooting is not automatic. Every shot uses a timing meter, and releasing Hold E close to the green section gives you the best chance of scoring. Take open shots instead of forcing contested ones, since a clean look is far more forgiving on the meter.
Each player has different stats, and those stats change your timing and your in-match role. A few minutes on a practice court to memorize your own release will improve your percentage faster than anything else. If you plan to play Center, dialing in your shot timing matters even more.
Score with layups, then dunks
Layups are the safest way to put up points near the basket, and they are one of the first things you learn. Move into the paint and press E to start the layup animation. Defenders can still block it, so attack when you have an open lane and time the release carefully. The Finishing tutorial is the best place to practice this.
Dunks are harder to pull off but much harder to defend. You need to be directly under or close to the rim, and you must be sprinting for the animation to trigger.
Pass often and learn the lob
This is a team game, so moving the ball creates better looks than forcing a contested shot. If a teammate is open, pass. Quick ball movement catches defenders out of position, and your teammates often have a cleaner scoring chance than you do.
The Lob Pass throws the ball over defenders, which makes it ideal when someone is blocking the passing lane to a teammate cutting toward the rim. Hold T, then press E to send it. Once you are comfortable with the basics, the Self Lob is an advanced follow-up: sprint toward the basket, press Shift + F, catch the rebound, then finish with E for a layup or Spacebar for a dunk.
Try every position before you settle
Each role plays differently, so rotate through all of them before deciding what suits you. Playing every spot also teaches you how teammates and opponents move.
| Position | Focus |
|---|---|
| Guard | Ball handling, passing, and perimeter shooting |
| Forward | Balancing offense and defense in the middle of the court |
| Center | Rebounds, blocks, and scoring near the rim |

Beginner tips that keep you competitive
- Lock in your shooting timing before playing ranked, and watch the shot meter on every attempt.
- Lean on layups for consistent scoring while you are still learning.
- Practice dunks in the Finishing tutorial so they hold up under pressure in real games.
- Use Lob Passes when defenders block passing lanes, and try Self Lobs only once you are confident.
- Do not sprint constantly. Stamina drains fast, and non-stop sprinting puts you out of position.
- Play several matches across different positions to find the role that fits you.
Your first few games will feel rough, and that is normal for a game with this much depth. Slow down, read defenders instead of rushing into them, and the dribble and timing systems start to click. Once they do, every possession becomes a lot more satisfying to play.
