Anime Expeditions: How Sovereign (Djinn) Works Against Bosses

A breakdown of the Update 2 Secret unit's dual Djinn states, freeze effects, and level 50 stats.

A breakdown of the Update 2 Secret unit’s dual Djinn states, freeze effects, and level 50 stats.

Sovereign (Djinn) is the Secret-rarity Sinbad unit added to Anime Expeditions in Update 2: Summer Siege, and it behaves differently depending on whether a boss is standing inside its range. That single condition changes which passive set is running, how much damage the unit deals, and whether enemies get frozen. Everything else about the unit follows from that one switch.

Quick answer: Place Sovereign (Djinn) so a boss enters its 27.2 range. Lightning Djinn handles regular waves with chained hits, and the moment a boss is in range, Nine Tailed Fox Djinn stacks on top of it for +50% damage, Freeze, and a permanent 15% Slow after the Freeze ends.

Sovereign (Djinn) stats at level 50

At level 50 with the upgrade path fully maxed at 10/10, the unit’s displayed numbers land as follows. Note that the listed DPS figure counts only the base attack, not the chain hits or the recurring strike passive.

StatValue
Damage7,128 (A+)
SPA4.6 (B)
Range27.2 (A-)
Crit chance0%
Crit damage100%
Listed DPS1,515/s

The unit starts at 584 Damage and 4.7 SPA at level 1, which is roughly 124 raw DPS before any passive is applied. That starting efficiency is part of why it holds up early in a run rather than only after heavy investment.

The two Djinn states and what triggers them

Passive Djinn Combination is the controller. It reads whether a boss is currently within the unit’s range and picks the form to match. There is no manual toggle and no cooldown on the swap itself.

Lightning Djinn (no boss in range)

Every regular attack chains up to five additional times. Each chain deals a fraction of the unit’s current damage, so against a crowded wave the hits spread outward across nearby enemies. Against a single target, all five chains land on that same enemy, which effectively doubles the value of the displayed hit.

Nine Tailed Fox Djinn (boss in range)

When a boss walks into range, this form comes online and adds 50% Damage on top of the existing attack package. Attacks also apply Freeze, and once that Freeze expires the affected enemy keeps a permanent 15% Slow. Importantly, the fox form does not turn Lightning Djinn off, so the chains keep firing alongside the buff.

Djinn’s Judgment

Separate from both forms, a lightning strike fires every seven seconds at the strongest enemy currently in range. It chains to five targets and applies Freeze on its own, adding a 75% strike plus three additional chained hits. This runs regardless of which Djinn form is active.

How to confirm the form actually swapped

The swap is visible on the board, so you do not need to open a menu mid-wave to check it. A boss spawn such as Sharkfang in Coral Kingdom – Tidal Siege will trigger the transformation as soon as it crosses into range, and the unit’s model changes to the fox form. Frozen enemies show the Freeze status, and slowed enemies keep moving at reduced speed after thawing.

If the fox form is not appearing, the usual cause is positioning. The boss must be inside the 27.2 range, not merely on screen or on the same path segment. Moving the placement closer to the lane the boss walks is the fix.

Placement and equipment notes

Three copies of Sovereign (Djinn) can be placed in a single run. Because the fox form only activates on boss proximity, spreading all three across distant corners of a map wastes the strongest part of the kit. Keeping at least one placement tight to the boss route is what turns the unit from a wave clearer into a boss killer.

Lightning Dagger, one of the seven pieces of equipment added in Update 2, fits the unit naturally. Its bonuses scale in small percentage increments, adding range and damage on top of the base stat line. The recommended trait for the unit is Unbound.

Where Sovereign (Djinn) comes from

The unit arrived alongside Lightning God (Overcharged), Jester, Kitsune, Head Captain (Char), Rainman (Forecast), Sand (Alligator), Sharkfang (Abyssal), and Water Mage (Scholar) in Update 2.0, which went live on August 31, 2026. Sovereign’s Portal is one of four new portals in that update, and materials for crafting Sovereign’s Secret Portal are earned through the Tidal Siege event.

Tier 5 portals drop Djinn’s Treasure at a 4% chance with a 25-run pity counter. Four of them craft the Secret Portal for the corresponding unit. The full changelog sits on the official Anime Expeditions update log.

Sinbad, the Magi character the unit draws from, is a Dungeon Capturer who commands seven Djinn and switches between metal vessels mid-fight, including the lightning of Baal and the ice and stagnation of Valefor. The two-state design here is a direct nod to that, with the vessel swap reduced to a single readable trigger. Tip: treat range as the real stat to optimize on this unit, since it decides how often the stronger of the two forms is running at all.
