Anime Vanguards has spent months skipping the usual cadence of small content drops in favor of one enormous anniversary release, and the official Anniversary Update Progress Report posted on the game’s Discord finally spells out what is in it. It is less a seasonal event and more a systems rebuild — progression, story structure, damage math, and the interface are all being touched at once.
Quick answer: The anniversary update is a 2.0-scale overhaul — Memoria customization, a Unit Mastery system, one-act Story Mode stages, global damage number cuts, a UI rebuild, 14 Vanguard Familiars, a new Vanguard Evolution, and an in-game TCG.
Anime Vanguards anniversary update: confirmed mechanics list
The progress report reads as a checklist rather than a teaser. Every entry below comes from that developer post, and together they cover almost every screen a player touches in a run.
| Feature | What changes |
|---|---|
| Memoria | Becomes customizable per unit |
| Story Mode | One unique act per stage |
| Damage numbers | Reduced across the board |
| UI | Modern, consistent rework |
| Lobby | New lobby |
| XP stage | Added |
| Unit Mastery | New progression system |
| Vanguard Familiars | 14 added |
| Vanguard Evolution | One new, non-TSJW |
| Ascensions | Removed |
| Game modes | Reworks, including Elemental Towers |
| AV TCG | New in-game card mode |
Memoria customization: stats, passives, and rerolls
Memoria is the equipment layer introduced ahead of the anniversary. Each Memoria hands a unit stat boosts, levels up, can be evolved, and carries passives that only apply to the unit holding it. Early passive examples shown off include Unstoppable Pressure, Requipping Goddess, and Teamplayer, with shield-bypass effects that matter a lot for units built around raw single-target damage.
Memoria traits are rerolled with their own dedicated currency, which puts the system on a separate progression track from unit traits. The anniversary change adds customization on top of that, so the passives on a Memoria are something you shape rather than something you keep rolling for.
Because Memoria passives stack onto meta units, expect it to become part of the baseline expectation for endgame builds rather than an optional extra.
Story Mode overhaul, mode reworks, and the AV TCG
One act per stage
Story Mode is being condensed. Instead of each stage running through several acts, every stage gets a single act with mechanics tailored to it. That trims the repetition of clearing near-identical maps back to back and pushes each stage to do something distinct.
Reworked modes and the end of Ascensions
Ascensions are being removed outright. Existing modes are also being reworked, with Elemental Towers named specifically. A new XP stage is being added as well, which gives leveling a dedicated place to happen rather than leaning on whatever mode happens to pay out best.
AV TCG
An in-game trading card game, listed as AV TCG, is part of the same release. It sits alongside the tower defense loop as its own mode rather than replacing anything, and it is the clearest signal that the update is aiming at variety instead of more of the same maps.
Damage number reduction and what it does not change
Damage values are being cut across the board. This is a scale change, not a balance pass — the goal is to make numbers readable again after a year of inflation, while leaving the relative standing of units intact. A unit that clears content now should still clear it after the squish, just with smaller figures on screen.
UI overhaul and new lobby
The developer note asks for a modern and consistent interface, which is aimed at the patchwork that has built up over a year of additions. The unit management screen and the lobby are the most visible targets, since those are the screens every player passes through before a run. A new lobby ships with it.
Unit Mastery, Vanguard Familiars, and the new Vanguard Evolution
Unit Mastery is the headline progression addition. It rewards using a unit rather than just owning it, and the exact payout — cosmetic flair, title badges, stat increases, or some mix — has not been detailed beyond the system’s name in the report.
Fourteen Vanguard Familiars are coming with the update. Previews shown so far include Hollowseph in a darkened arena and Callasuba appearing with an animated dragon. Separately, Transcendent Sung Jin-woo is getting full animation cutscenes in an anime-styled presentation, and the update also includes one new Vanguard Evolution that is not Transcendent Sung Jin-woo.
Release timing for the anniversary update
No official release date or time has been confirmed. The progress report is candid about why, citing missed internal deadlines, legal and real-life hurdles, and the volume of assets still being finished. The scope is the reason — this is effectively a 2.0 pass on the game rather than a seasonal patch.
In the meantime, mini updates and event passes have kept releasing. Those battle passes and smaller drops are what funds the development cost of the larger release, which is why the gap between July and September was filled with event content instead of full updates.

What the previous anniversary event added
The last anniversary release gives a useful sense of how the event layer tends to work alongside the systems changes. It introduced Trading for players at level 50 and above, added Unit Serialization — a 0.5% chance for a Shiny God to roll as a Serialized version with a different model and a serial number in place of the Shiny tag — and shipped 13 new units.
The event loop itself ran on Cake Slices, a limited currency earned in the Anniversary Dungeon by clearing revisited stages from past updates. Update codes were redeemed through the Codes menu for Trait Rerolls, Cake Slices, and Stat Chips.

Those Cake Slices were spent two ways. St. Itchas in the story area sold evolution items and bulk rewards, while a limited Anniversary Banner rolled for one Secret unit and six Exclusives.

Taken together, the anniversary release is the kind of update that resets how the game is played rather than adding to the pile. Removing Ascensions, shrinking damage numbers, collapsing Story Mode acts, and layering Unit Mastery and Memoria customization on top all point at the same thing — a cleaner progression spine before the next year of content lands on it.
