Every one of the eight collectibles in Matanzas, from the underwater chest to the crocodile and the locked warehouse painting.

Matanzas holds eight collectibles in the 2026 remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. The set covers one Viewpoint, one Mayan Stelae, two Chests, two Secrets, one huntable animal, and one painting, and clearing all of them gives the island 100% completion.

Quick answer: Sync the Viewpoint to reveal every marker except portraits, then collect the beach bottle, the manor chest, the watchtower chest, the underwater chest, the Mayan Stelae behind the waterfall, the warehouse painting (needs the corpse key near the crocodile), and hunt the crocodile itself.

Where Matanzas is and how markers appear

Matanzas sits at map coordinates 302, 620 in the Dry Tortuga region. Collectibles pin themselves to the world map when you get close to them or when you synchronize the Viewpoint. Climbing and syncing the Viewpoint first is the fastest way to surface the chests, Secrets, and Stelae, so tackle that before combing the ground.

Note: The painting counts as a portrait-type pickup, so it only shows once you are near it rather than from the Viewpoint sync. You still need the warehouse key to reach it.

Chests and Secrets

Two Secrets and two Chests make up most of the set. Both Secrets are quick lore pickups, while one chest sits on land and the other is submerged offshore.

The first Secret is the letter “On Leaving Home,” found in a bottle lying in the sand at the western end of the beach. The second Secret is the Bronze Wheel, listed as a Common Wheel, stored in a chest on the second floor of the manor.

The money chest at #3 stands in the center of the island beside the watchtower, so it is hard to miss once the Viewpoint is synced. The second money chest at #6 is underwater, just off the beach on the east side, so dive down to open it.

Mayan Stelae behind the waterfall

The Mayan Stelae is tucked into the south-east corner of Matanzas, to the left of a waterfall. To solve it, climb onto the pillar and line up the larger circle with the tree on the left. Once the shapes align, the carving reveals its location and the Stelae registers as collected.

Tip: This same spot doubles as the dig point for the Treasure Map looted from Tortuga, so you can clear both objectives in one visit.

Warehouse painting “Merry Company”

The painting is locked inside the warehouse, and you cannot open the door until you find the key. That key is on a corpse near the crocodile, which makes this pickup and the animal hunt a natural pair.

Head to the rocks near the crocodile and search the corpse there to grab the warehouse key.
Return to the warehouse and use the key to unlock the door. Inside, you will collect “Merry Company,” which completes the painting for Matanzas.

Viewpoint and the crocodile

Matanzas has a single Viewpoint. Syncing it early is worth doing first because it pins the chests, Secrets, and Stelae to the map so you are not searching blind.

The huntable animal here is the crocodile, found around the rocks. Since the warehouse key sits on the nearby corpse, hunt the crocodile and grab the key in the same trip to knock out two collectibles at once.

Once all eight are logged, Matanzas shows 100% on its island completion tracker. Nothing here is missable, and you can return during free-roam after the story if you leave any behind. From there, you can move on to the neighboring Dry Tortuga islands, including Havana and Florida, to keep chipping away at full completion.
