Assassin’s Creed Shadows Domains: How to Unlock, Challenge Levels, and Reward Gear

Everything needed to reach the new arena mode, clear all 10 challenge levels, and claim its exclusive weapons and armor.

Title update 1.1.11 closes out Assassin’s Creed Shadows with Domains, a replayable endgame mode that pits Naoe and Yasuke against remixed, Animus-altered arenas. You clear waves of enemies across five maps, fight a corrupted boss, and earn currency and gear you cannot get anywhere else in the game. The catch is that random modifiers reshape every run, so builds that flattened the main story will not carry you here.

Quick answer: Finish the Black Tides, Double-Crossed, and Buried Secrets quests, then travel to the Hidden River area in Yamato and speak with MOD. She hands you 15 Tokens and opens the Access Gateway, where you spend Tokens to generate Challenge Level 1.

How to unlock Domains in Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Domains do not open the moment you install the update. The mode is gated behind the final story content, so you need to complete a short chain of quests first before MOD will let you in.

Complete the Black Tides, Double-Crossed, and Buried Secrets quests. These wrap up the last narrative beat of the update and introduce the modern-day hacker who runs the mode.
At the end of Buried Secrets, MOD tells you about Domains and points you to the entry location. Fast travel to the Hidden River area in the Yamato region.
Speak with MOD to begin. She gives you 15 Tokens, which you need to generate challenges. Then interact with the nearby Access Gateway prompt to view the challenge list and start your first run.

You also need to be at least Level 30 to play Challenge Level 1. Higher levels scale enemies up to 100, so clearing the toughest tiers effectively means hitting max level yourself. Wrapping up the Shinbakufu hunt, the Claws of Awaji expansion, and a New Game+ run all help you get there.

How Domains work

The loop is consistent across every run. You spend Tokens to generate a Gateway challenge, drop into one of five randomly chosen maps, and hunt down four Samurai Daisho. Killing all four opens the boss arena, where you face one of three corrupted, Animus-altered bosses to clear the level. The Daisho and boss positions stay fixed on each map, so only the enemies and modifiers change.

Modifiers are the heart of the mode. Each run rolls one or more conditions that change how you fight. Some help you, like a health boost on easier tiers, while others stack the deck against you as difficulty climbs. One example, called “Like a Prayer,” surrounds you with a damage-over-time circle that also shreds doors, barrels, and other breakable objects as you move. Animus Exploits, bought with Domains currency, can cancel out some negative modifiers, but they only work inside the mode.

Builds carry over both ways. Anything you own in the main game is usable in Domains, and rewards you earn here come back out with you. If you dislike the modifiers you rolled, you can generate a fresh Domain for 5 Tokens, which you earn by eliminating Anomalies. You also will not lose progress if you leave a run partway through. Open the map and pick “Exit Domain” at the bottom.

All Domain challenge levels and difficulty scaling

There are 10 Gateway challenge levels. You unlock them one at a time by clearing the previous tier, and you always start from the bottom regardless of your current character level. Enemy health, damage, and the number of active modifiers all climb as you go.

The five Domain maps

One of five maps is picked at random each time you generate a challenge. Each one changes how you navigate and fight. The Whiteout Domain, for instance, is built around a heavy blizzard that limits visibility until you kill enough Daisho and the weather starts to clear.

Tips for clearing tougher Domains

Button-mashing that worked in castles and main-story bosses falls apart here, especially once modifiers stack at higher tiers. A few habits make the difference.

  • Swap characters mid-run. Clear the four Daisho with Naoe’s stealth, then switch to Yasuke for the boss arena. Don’t sleep on Yasuke builds, since some modifiers are only beatable with his weapon set.
  • Upgrade and engrave your gear. Push every piece to the highest level available and add engravings to create synergies with your abilities.
  • Play efficiently. Use every tool and ability deliberately and watch enemy attacks rather than trading blindly.
  • Adapt your build. If a weapon, engraving, or ability is the thing holding you back, change it and experiment.
  • Reroll bad modifiers. Spend 5 Tokens to generate a new Domain if the rolled conditions clash with your playstyle.

Domain rewards: XP and MODcoins per level

Every cleared level grants experience and MODcoins, and both scale with the challenge tier. MODcoins are the spending currency for MOD’s Shop and the Exploit Tree.

The Exploit Tree spends MODcoins on augments that buff your Domain runs, shared between Naoe and Yasuke, priced from 750 up to 4,000 each. You know a level cleared because the boss falls, the run ends, and the next Gateway challenge becomes available alongside any tracked quest update on the Objective Board.

Domains is built to push your build past its comfort zone, and the payoff is a set of weapons and cosmetics that double as a record of how far you got. Clear the early tiers to bank MODcoins, reinvest them in Exploits and shop gear that counter the modifiers you keep rolling, and the Nightmare-tier runs become a matter of preparation rather than luck.
