Beating The Village with Bad Food in Dave the Diver: In the Jungle (Chapter 1)

Every objective in the DLC's opening chapter, from catching the Tilapia to unlocking the Purification Filter.

Every objective in the DLC’s opening chapter, from catching the Tilapia to unlocking the Purification Filter.

The Village with Bad Food opens Dave the Diver: In the Jungle and sends Dave, Cobra, Bancho, and Dr. Bacon to Utara Village. A loud noise and frequent earthquakes have turned the jungle lake murky, and a prehistoric creature has washed up on the beach. Chapter 1 is short and acts as the tutorial, walking you through the boat, the new Jungle Gun, and your first fish catch before handing off directly to Chapter 2.

Quick answer: Talk to Bancho in the Sushi Bar, call Dr. Bacon and pick “I’m Ready,” receive the Jungle Gun from Muna, speak to the Village Chief, dive and catch the marked Tilapia at 5–10m, then return and talk to Bancho to get the Purification Filter, which ends the chapter.

Welcome to the Jungle: start the expedition

The Prologue, To a New Place, sets up the trip. Dr. Bacon contacts Dave and Cobra about the strange activity at the lake, and the pair head off to convince Bancho before leaving.

Interact with the boat’s engine room and select Sushi to reach the Sushi Bar. Talk to Bancho there to bring him on board with the plan.
Bring up your phone (Esc on PC) and choose Call. Select Dr. Bacon, then pick “I’m Ready” to trigger the opening cutscene and travel to Utara Village.

After the cutscene, Muna hands you the Jungle Gun. The lake water has turned murky from the earthquakes, and the ancient creature on the beach is the mystery you’re here to solve.

The Jungle Gun and its four modes

The Jungle Gun replaces your old harpoon setup and switches between four modes during a dive. Each mode draws from its own ammo set, so you can cycle freely depending on the situation.

Catch the Tilapia Fish

With the gun in hand, your first real objective begins on land. Speak to the Village Chief, who stands in front of a run-down house, to get your task of bringing back a Tilapia.

Dive into the lake. The target Tilapia sits around 5–10m deep and carries a yellow exclamation point above its head to mark it as the quest fish.

Aim with your harpoon (RMB on PC) and fire (LMB on PC). Once it connects, fill the gauge by pressing the button prompt (spacebar on PC) to complete the catch.
Surface and choose to return to the village to end the dive with the Tilapia secured.

Deliver the fish and get the Purification Filter

Bancho is the final stop. You’ll find him in the centre of the village, straight up from the diving deck.

After the cutscene with Bancho, Muna gives you the Purification Filter, the tool you’ll use to deal with the Hydrogen Sulphide in the murky lake water.

You’ll know the chapter is finished when receiving the Purification Filter rolls straight into Chapter 2, Jungle Life!, without any further input. That handoff is the confirmation that The Village with Bad Food is complete. From there, the DLC opens up the day/night cycle, Bancho Grill’s rating system, the lower section of Utara Lake, and your first sub missions.
