Big Walk: How to Get the Key and Open the Red Bridge

Solve all four intro-area gourd puzzles, forge the key at the altars, and clear the first drawbridge blocking the map.

Solve all four intro-area gourd puzzles, forge the key at the altars, and clear the first drawbridge blocking the map.

The red drawbridge by the beach is the wall that keeps you locked inside Big Walk‘s opening zone. It only lowers once you build a key from four items scattered around the tutorial area, then reshape that key at a set of altars. Everything you need is close by, since the rest of the island stays sealed until you cross.

Quick answer: Collect all four Gourds from the intro-area puzzles, place them into the slots near the beach to pull the key, shape the key at every altar it points you to, then insert it at the drawbridge to lower it.

What you need to open the red bridge

The drawbridge stays raised until you complete the four starter puzzles and finish shaping the key. Along the shoreline near the bridge sits a station with four empty slots. Each puzzle hands you one red item, which the game treats as a Gourd, and each Gourd fills one slot. There is no set order, so tackle them however suits your group.

Note: Big Walk adjusts some puzzles to your party size. In a duo you may only stack one friend where a larger group needs several players on a switch, but the solutions stay close to what is described below.

Telescope puzzle: retrieve the first Gourd

Face the red walkway and head up the hill to the right. You will find a telescope paired with a switch. Pressing the switch reveals a red light in the distance, and looking through the telescope shows a container holding a Gourd.

This one needs two roles. One player stays at the telescope base and holds the button so the container stays open. The other walks out to the box, grabs the Gourd, and carries it back to the slot station.

Yellow structure puzzle: climb for the hanging Gourd

Close to the color-changing station stands an L-shaped yellow structure with a Gourd dangling from the top. A switch sits right beside the Gourd, out of normal reach.

To reach the switch, climb onto a teammate and hop up to press it. You pick up a friend by aiming at the lower half of their body and pressing the action button. Larger parties may need to stack several players, with the top one jumping to make contact.

Blue house puzzle: match the pattern sequence

From the red gate where you entered the map, walk down the cliff and stay on the left path until you reach a blue house-shaped building.

One player enters the locked room and reads a row of patterns. That player calls out the order, and the others place the matching panels on the wall. Once the panels are set, press the switch on the right. A correct sequence triggers confetti, and the Gourd drops from the clamp.

Green structure puzzle: hit the switches together

Leave the blue house and head toward the ocean and the slot station. You cannot miss the large green structure, which holds the final puzzle for the area. Look around its columns for a set of switches.

Every player has to press their switch at the exact same moment. Coordinate a count, hit them together, and the Gourd releases. This is the puzzle most sensitive to party size, since each column switch usually needs a body on it.

Place the four Gourds and pull the key

Bring all four Gourds back to the slot station on the beach. The case stays shut on its own, so one player presses a switch to open it while another drops the Gourds into the empty slots.

With all four slots filled, you can pull the key out. It is not ready to use yet, so head to the shaping stage next.

Shape the key at the altars

The raw key has to be cut into the right shape before it fits the drawbridge. You do this at a chain of shaping devices, sometimes called altars, which each carve the key when you insert it.

The first altar sits right next to where you pulled the key. After you use it, an arrow on top points toward the next one, and that one points to the one after it, and so on. Several are clustered near the key station, and the rest are out along the rocks on the shoreline, so follow the arrows until the key is fully cut.

Lower the drawbridge and cross

Once the key is shaped, carry it to the red drawbridge along the rocks and place it in the marked spot. The bridge lowers, and the map opens up so your group can move into the next area and start exploring freely. If the key does not fit, you have missed an altar, so retrace the arrows and finish the remaining cuts before returning to the bridge.
