Borderlands 4: How to Unlock and Beat Vulkorr (Loot and Location)

Flip all five Substation Switches across Providence Island to open the secret boss fight and farm his drops.

Flip all five Substation Switches across Providence Island to open the secret boss fight and farm his drops.

Vulkorr is a hidden boss in the FL4K and the Last Resort Story Pack for Borderlands 4, tucked away on Providence Island. He does not appear on the map until you power up a series of Substation Switches scattered across three regions, and beating him for the first time also awards the Substation Satisfaction achievement.

Quick answer: Activate all five Substation Switches, then travel to the cave northeast of The Sauced Snake Tiki Bar in Bagheera Range and interact with the shielded door. It only opens once every switch is on, and Vulkorr waits just past the Substation Control room on the left.

All five Substation Switch locations

The five switches are spread across the Vinechocked Canopy, Bagheera Range, and Pyroclast Field. Each one sits behind a locked bunker door, and most require a small puzzle to reach. Here is where they are and how each door opens.

SwitchRegionHow to open the door
#1Vinechocked CanopyGrapple the battery out of the wall
#2Bagheera RangeShoot the battery opposite the door
#3Bagheera RangeFollow the red wire to a generator
#4Pyroclast FieldFollow the red wire to a generator room
#5Tediore Supply Outpost Primaris, Pyroclast FieldPull the switch (no puzzle)

Switch #1 – Vinechocked Canopy

Head to the northern part of the Vinechocked Canopy. The bunker door here is sealed by a blue shield.
Look up from the door and press V to grapple the battery out of the wall. The shield drops instantly, and you can drop the battery since it serves no further purpose.
Go inside, take a right, and follow the linear path to the switch. Flip it before you leave.

Switch #2 – Bagheera Range cavern

Go to the very southeast corner of Bagheera Range and drop into the cavern you find there.
You will spot the blocked door at the bottom. Turn around and shoot the battery connected to the wires above you to deactivate it.
Enter the building, push past the Rippers along the linear path, and activate the switch.

Switch #3 – Bagheera Range Creep bunker

Also in southeastern Bagheera Range, find the dark, abandoned bunker guarded by Creeps. The Blind is the closest fast travel point if you need one.
Enter and drop down. The switch room door is locked, so follow the red wire running along the floor until it leads you to a generator.
Activate the generator. The door opens, letting you reach and flip the switch inside.

Switch #4 – Pyroclast Field

Start from The Blind fast travel station and head southeast into Pyroclast Field. You cannot reach this spot from a fast travel point inside Pyroclast Field itself, so approach it from The Blind.
Inside the substation, follow the red wire toward the locked switch room. Jump and mantle over the opening to get into the generator room.
Deal with the generator, then head into the now-open room and flip the switch.

Switch #5 – Tediore Supply Outpost Primaris

Head east from Pyroclast Field into the Tediore Supply Outpost Primaris. The switch sits in a bunker built into the cave wall next to the lava.
This one has no puzzle. Walk into the building, clear the enemies in your way, and flip the final switch.

How to reach Vulkorr

Once all five switches are active, you will get a Substation Control notification and a prompt to check your map. A large search area appears in Bagheera Range, and the entrance you want is a cave northeast of The Sauced Snake Tiki Bar.

Follow the pinned marker to the cave and interact with the shielded door inside. With every switch on, it disables straight away. Move through into the Substation Control area and take a left to find Vulkorr.

Note: If the door will not open, one of the five switches is still off. Return to your map and confirm the Substation Control notification appeared before making the trip.

How to beat Vulkorr

Vulkorr is not a demanding fight. His attacks are limited to close-range melee strikes, so simply walking backwards keeps you out of reach while you shoot. He only has a single yellow health bar to burn through.

Every so often he duplicates himself, but the copies are just a distraction. Ignore them and keep firing at the real target. Defeating him the first time unlocks the Substation Satisfaction achievement, and his boss icon then stays on your map for repeat runs.

Vulkorr loot drops

Vulkorr has his own dedicated drop pool. The confirmed reward so far is Avarice, a Legendary Order assault rifle.

Because Vulkorr’s icon remains on the map after your first kill, you can return and farm him for Avarice and any other items in his pool as often as you like.
