The Astonisher is a Pearl shotgun that drops from the final boss of Borderlands 4’s second DLC, and on paper it is a one-shot-per-magazine gun. Pull the trigger once, the whole magazine is gone, and you reload. Stack enough magazine size and ammo regeneration on Rafa, though, and that reload never actually happens — the gun just keeps firing, forever, at full damage.
Quick answer: Equip a Jakobs-accessory Astonisher, then push its magazine past 60 rounds using magazine-size bonuses, the Freeloader enhancement, and Rafa’s ammo regeneration. The reload prompt appears but never completes.
Astonisher Pure Energy perk: why one shot empties the magazine
The Astonisher’s unique perk is Pure Energy, and its card is blunt about what it does: “Firing consumes the entire Mag and increases Damage by +3.3% per Ammo consumed.” Every round in the magazine is spent on a single trigger pull, and every one of those rounds adds damage to that shot. A bigger magazine is not a convenience here, it is the damage stat.
Fire it with a stock loadout and you get exactly what you expect. One enormous hit lands on whatever you were pointing at, and then you are empty.

The problem is the second half of that loop. The gun is empty, the reload prompt comes up, and the animation costs you far more time than the shot was worth. That is the behavior the build is built to break.

Add to Google Preferences →The 60-round magazine breakpoint explained
Once your magazine capacity climbs past 60 rounds, the timing between emptying, refilling, and reloading stops lining up. Ammo pours back into the magazine faster than the reload can resolve, so the gun treats itself as loaded again and fires. The result is continuous shooting with no reload animation and no drop in damage per shot.
Three things have to be true at the same time for that to hold:
- Magazine capacity of 60 or more rounds on the equipped Astonisher, counting every source of magazine size you have.
- The Freeloader enhancement, which gives guns with Ripper-licensed parts a 30% chance to instantly refill the magazine when it empties.
- Active ammo regeneration feeding rounds back into the magazine while you hold the trigger.
Freeloader only looks at Ripper-licensed parts, so check the gun’s part list in your inventory before you start chasing magazine size. No Ripper parts, no instant refills, no loop.

Rafa skills for ammo regeneration and magazine size
Points go into two trees. Remote Agent, the red tree, covers damage and survivability and holds the passives that scale the build’s output. People Person, the blue tree, is where the ammo regeneration and fire rate live, and that half is what actually keeps the loop alive.
Ammo regeneration
Bullet-Buddy Deluxe is the Peacebreaker Cannons augment you want. While the cannons are active, it regenerates ammo directly into the magazine for Rafa and his allies, which is exactly the input the Astonisher needs. Las Jaras supplies the rest of the sustain and keeps the magazine topped off between cannon uptime.
Damage passives worth the points
Vitriol, First Impressions, and Temerario all received buffs and are the main reason this setup hits harder than earlier Rafa ricochet variants. Soltado, Bullets to Spare, Rubberband Man, and The Best Defense fill out the remaining points across the two trees.

Jakobs ricochet accessory on the Astonisher
The accessory slot is what turns a big single shot into screen-wide damage. A Jakobs-licensed accessory makes critical hits ricochet to nearby enemies, and because the ricochets find their own targets, precise aim stops mattering. You point roughly at a crowd and the rounds sort out where they land.
That is also why the build works on bosses. A single large target gets hit by the original shot and then repeatedly by the bounces, so the same loop that clears rooms also chews through a health bar.
Gear, enhancement, and specializations
| Slot | Item | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Hungry Scraping Astonisher | Pure Energy damage, Jakobs ricochets |
| Enhancement | Freeloader | 30% instant magazine refill |
| Class mod | Devastating Dancer | Core damage scaling |
| Shield | Watts 4 Dinner | Siphon-based survivability |
The Devastating Dancer class mod and Watts 4 Dinner shield do the heavy lifting outside the gun itself, the first for raw damage and the second for the shield siphoning that keeps you standing while you hold the trigger. A Cyclopean Hefty Autophage rounds out the loadout.
For passive specializations, the build runs I Am A Gun, Now With Caffeine, Riddle You This, and A Honed Mind.
If you have not farmed the Astonisher yet, the Lockjaw and a Spread Launcher shotgun work as stand-ins for the ricochet playstyle, though neither reproduces the no-reload loop.
How to check the infinite fire loop is working
Hold the trigger on any group of enemies and watch the bottom of the screen. If the setup is correct, the reload prompt will flicker on but the gun keeps firing through it, and you never see a reload animation play out. Damage numbers keep landing at the same size instead of tapering, because each shot is still consuming a full magazine.

If the reload does complete, the magazine is short of the threshold. Go back to the equipment screen, add magazine size until the count clears 60, and confirm the Ripper parts are still on the gun for Freeloader to read. Once both are true, the loop holds for as long as you keep the trigger down.
