Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 ends with a knife, not a firefight. Greater Good, the 16th and last campaign mission, puts you back in control of Captain John Price for a final confrontation with The Archer, the Mads Mikkelsen villain who has been steering the whole war. One mission earlier, Decapitation wraps up the Korean invasion story through Pvt. Park Hyun-Jun. After the credits, a short scene with Kate Laswell decides what is left of Task Force 141.
Quick answer: On the frozen lake, Price cuts The Archer’s throat with a knife. Price then succumbs to his injuries, and Ghost shuts his eyes. Later, Laswell erases Task Force 141’s records.
The Archer final boss fight is a scripted melee struggle
This encounter has no health meter or arena, and it never shifts into another phase. Price has already lost his rifle by the time he reaches The Archer, leaving button prompts as the entire combat system. He advances toward The Archer’s outline in the fog; a Takedown prompt appears, and Price slams him onto the fractured ice.
The fight becomes a grapple at arm’s length. They exchange punches and struggle for control of a knife as the game repeatedly calls for R2. Price catches The Archer’s attempt to stab him, reverses the weapon, and plunges it into his throat. That hit ends the fight, and The Archer bleeds out on the ice.

| Moment | On-screen prompt |
|---|---|
| Escaping the truck | R3 (retry screen if missed) |
| Freeing Price’s hands | Cut Restraints |
| Chase objective | Kill The Archer |
| Reaching The Archer | Takedown |
| Knife struggle | R2 |
The sequence’s only displayed failure condition happens earlier, in the truck. Missing the initial escape prompt brings up a TRY AGAIN screen directing you to press R3 and break free while the guards are occupied.

Price wins, but The Archer has already given him a fatal wound. He drops onto his back next to the body, bleeding heavily onto the frozen surface.

Ghost walks out of the fog with his rifle up, checks the scene, and kneels beside Price. He asks whether it was worth it. Price’s answer is short: “Gaz was right… Hold the line.” That phrase was Gaz’s motto, and earlier in the mission Price replays a conversation with Gaz about rules of engagement and the moral cost of the job, including the line “We get dirty and the world stays clean.”
A short time later, Price is dead. Ghost shuts Price’s eyes, retrieves the green duffel bag at the center of the mission, then crosses the lake on foot, leaving both bodies behind. The image fades to black.
The game treats the death as final. Price’s file in the post-credits scene is stamped DECEASED. Infinity Ward narrative director Jeff Negus has declined to state it outright, saying only that the scene is consistent with how other character deaths in the game are paced and staged. Call of Duty has brought characters back before, but nothing on screen leaves Price an exit.
Greater Good: From the prison convoy to the frozen lake
Price enters the mission as The Archer’s prisoner. He was recaptured in North Korea after Gaz was executed and Ghost got away, and The Archer took him along when he fled the palace ahead of the strike team. A mission card reads “Current Day / GREATER GOOD / JOHN PRICE.”
The Archer’s speech in the truck
The opening is a ride in a military convoy down a snowy mountain road. Price sits bound in the back of a transport truck, surrounded by guards in winter camo, with The Archer directly across from him. The Archer mocks Price’s failed plans, calls Korea a proving ground, and lays out a “new Russian Empire” pushing through Ukraine, Poland, the rest of Europe, and England. He also threatens the people close to Price, including his family.

The ambush and the escape
While The Archer is speaking, Ghost attacks the convoy. The guards’ distraction gives Price a chance to lunge at The Archer and take his weapon; the truck then tumbles down a snowy ravine. Price wakes in the wreckage with his wrists still zip-tied as Konni guards protect the defense minister under fire. He cuts through the restraints with a jagged piece of metal.

The chase through the forest
Ghost calls over the radio and directs Price to take a weapon from a fallen soldier, then pursue The Archer as he heads east toward the trees. The pickup card identifies the gun as Kastov 762, while a “Kill The Archer” marker appears. The chase becomes a conventional battle in the blizzard, as groups of Konni guards take cover among the pines.

The woods eventually open onto a wide, fogged-in frozen river and lake.

Price slides down a steep drop and loses his rifle on the way. He hits the ice hard, his vision blurs, and the remembered exchange with Gaz plays as he limps through the whiteout toward a lone figure ahead.

The Korea ending in Decapitation
The other half of the campaign closes in mission 15. Sierra-1 runs an unsanctioned raid on the North Korean Presidential Palace to kill Ri Ju-Young, who took power by murdering her brother, Ri Seung-Ho, with The Archer’s backing. Ghost and the defector Lt. Ko Jin-Hyuk join the assault.
Playing as Park, you fight through a lavish palace hall full of display cars, artifacts, and statues under the objective “Find and Kill Commander Ri.” A locked door at the end of a marble corridor sends the squad through a secret passage behind a portrait. In the basement, the team cuts the power and switches to night vision. Shooting a squadmate here fails the mission on the spot with the message “Friendly fire will not be tolerated!”
Two breaches end the hunt, first into the war room and then into the inner office where Ri Ju-Young is holed up. An explosion knocks the squad off its feet as the shooting starts, and Park fires the shot that kills her.

The squad requests “Jackpot” and retreats to the helicopters beyond the burning palace. Ko stays behind. Although he had earlier wanted to leave, he tells Park that Korea is home and that he intends to fight for its future, suggesting he means to steer the country in a different direction. Park boards the helicopter, and during the flight away, the soldiers discuss the operation and their next steps as the act concludes.

A title sequence follows, with “MODERN WARFARE 4” and “AN INFINITY WARD GAME” cards and a roll call pairing each character model with its actor, before Greater Good begins.
Laswell’s post-credits scene erases Task Force 141
After the credits begin, Kate Laswell is shown at a laptop in a room filled with sunlight. She logs into a password-protected network, opens HQ PROFILES, and deletes three records one by one, making each deletion permanent.
- Kyle “Gaz” Garrick’s service record
- Simon “Ghost” Riley’s record
- John Price’s profile, filed as “Price, J.” and “Bravo Six”
The camera lingers on Price’s file. It lists him as wanted in connection with General Shepherd’s murder, disavowed from TF141, and deceased. His designation is Field Commander, his recent locations are NYC, Paris, and Mumbai, and his known associations include Riley, Vargas, Garrick, Sanders, and Laswell herself.
Laswell disconnects from the secure TF141 remote terminal, removes a USB drive, and runs a script to stop processes and empty RAM before closing the laptop. A woman places a glass of tea on the table. Laswell says operations are shifting to the DMZ and welcomes the woman into the Watcher Program as her successor. The new Watcher’s name is never given.
The logic is straightforward. Soap died in Modern Warfare III, and Gaz and Price die here, which leaves Ghost as the only original 141 member still alive. Laswell shuts the unit down and steps back from the role she has held since Modern Warfare (2019). Ghost’s file is wiped even though he survives, which lines up with him working outside 141, and in the DMZ, from here on.
Who The Archer is, and who dies in Modern Warfare 4
The Archer is the force operating behind Vladimir Makarov. Early in the campaign, Price kills Makarov in New York, then discovers that another figure had been directing events. That figure is a Russian defense minister connected to the Konni Group; a revelation late in the story identifies him as Makarov’s father.
The Archer also connects the two storylines. He provided North Korea with the EMP weapon that triggered the South’s invasion, and supported Ri Ju-Young’s coup on the condition that she launch the war. Her death brings his Korean scheme to an end, while killing him removes the danger to Europe. Price pays for the latter victory with his life.
| Character | Fate | Killed by |
|---|---|---|
| Vladimir Makarov | Dies in New York | Price |
| Cdr. Philip Graves | Executed in a warehouse | Price |
| Valeria Garza | Dies after a failed double-cross | The Archer |
| Ri Seung-Ho | Murdered in the palace bunker | Ri Ju-Young |
| Kyle “Gaz” Garrick | Executed in captivity | The Archer |
| Ri Ju-Young | Killed in Decapitation | Pvt. Park |
| “The Archer” | Stabbed on the frozen lake | Price |
| John Price | Dies of his wounds | The Archer |
Ghost, Laswell, Park, and Lt. Ko all survive. The unresolved leads most plainly are Ghost and Laswell’s unnamed successor, and each points toward DMZ.
Ending trophy, mission rewards, and In Memoriam credits
The ending is confirmed when the Hold the Line trophy appears against a black screen just after Ghost departs. Its title comes from Price’s final words. Completing either of the last two missions also grants a reward.
| Mission | Number | Completion reward |
|---|---|---|
| Decapitation | 15 | Double XP Token |
| Greater Good | 16 | Park Operator |
Before the Infinity Ward studio credits, dedication screens honor Reiner Yang, Matt Canale, Preetam Raj Bordoloi, and Vince Zampella. The earlier title sequence lists the principal cast tied to the ending.
