Rose meets a spirit on a bridge in the Burned District of Paris Streets in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse

Paris Streets is where Rose Belmont’s story begins, on the docks of the River Seine. It is also one of the densest areas in the game. Several of its pickups stay out of reach until you have the Arcane Whip, Holy Light and a large number of Heart Fragments, so you will come back to it more than once.

Quick answer: Paris Streets holds 28 XP statues, 24 secret areas, four weapons, five relics, three keepsakes, three of each Heart Fragment and stat book, nine clues, five Mirrors of Life and one Ferryman’s Wharf.

Paris Streets collectible totals

Use these counts as your 100 percent checklist. The area’s exits lead to the Catacombs of Paris, Holy Innocents’ Cemetery and the Main Hall. Some pickups listed here are tied to bosses or to abilities you earn elsewhere.

The route opens at the Seine docks. From there you head through the Undercity, where skeletons and other early enemies guard narrow stone walkways.

How Paris Streets secret areas open

Almost half of the area’s loot sits behind something that looks like solid scenery. The game marks these spots with visual and audio cues. Each secret opens in one of four ways:

  • False wall: walk straight through it.
  • Breakable wall: a cracked panel that crumbles after a few weapon hits.
  • Lever gate: pull a nearby lever to lift the gate.
  • Smash floor: shatter it with a Stomp. Thicker floors need a Stomp from a greater height.

Rose’s Stomp hits harder when she has more distance to fall. If a floor stays intact, get to a higher point and try the drop again. Mark any currently inaccessible spot on your map for a return trip; press Square on PlayStation or Space on PC to place a marker.

Found in the Master’s Quarters, the Gloomstone relic alerts Rose when a hidden secret is nearby. It also makes a return sweep through Paris Streets much quicker.

Cestus is inside a chest on the platform over the water in the Sewer Reservoir. Swing across the sewer arches to get there. The chest locks the room and triggers an ambush when opened, so make sure Rose is at full health first.

Find the Bastard sword in a golden chest on a raised platform in the Justice District Sewers. Spiked water wheels of enormous size rotate along the route, so wait for a safe opening before moving past them.

Burnt Sword of Fierbois is stuck in the ground in Joan of Arc’s arena on the Roof of the Tower. You can pull it free once she is defeated. It is the sword of Joan of Arc herself.

Valmanway takes the longest to earn. At the Overgrown Oak in the Palace of Justice, stand on the golden scales to trigger the Balancing the Scales of Justice clue. The scales only balance once Rose has collected at least 12 Brave Heart and 12 Wise Heart Fragments across the whole game. Clearing that trial leads to Saint Louis, the Palace of Justice boss. Beating him rewards The Judge arcana (Chains of Justice) and Valmanway, a legendary wind blade with ATK 75 whose attacks repeat after a short delay.

Find the Dark Sigil chest on an upper balcony in the Ruined Market, accessible via grapple rings. While Rose remains at full health, it boosts her defense by 80 percent.

Crypt Key, Shadow Veil and Obsidian Fang

In the Burned District’s Seer’s Hovel, defeat the enemies before jumping onto the platform above the entrance door. Open the ornate chest there to get the Crypt Key. While it is equipped, opening any chest fully restores Rose’s health and mana.

Shadow Veil appears on the top level of the Burned District arena room once the enemy wave is cleared. To get there, climb through the burning rafters and break the floors along the way. It raises Rose’s defense by 33 percent while her health is below 33 percent. Obsidian Fang is in the Guard Level of the Prison Tower, in a side recess past a spike-lined descent. Breaking an enemy’s guard while wearing it gives Rose 40 percent more damage for 3 seconds.

Thrilling Eye and the two Catacombs keys

The Hospital’s entrance is a red door next to the Street of the Tomb Masons. The Thrilling Eye sits inside one of the Hospital’s three hidden passages, on the occult wheel altar on the lower floor, and you reach it by moving through rooms linked by glowing teleport portals. It is one of three Eyes needed for a sealed door in the Catacombs of Paris. The Fallen’s Key and The Warrior’s Key are two of the three keys for the large gate at the Gate to the Catacombs. The third, The Prophetess’s Key, comes from outside Paris Streets.

Every four Brave Heart Fragments permanently raise Rose’s maximum health. Every four Wise Heart Fragments do the same for her mana. When you complete a set, the game confirms it with a “Brave Heart Completed!” message. The Torture Level Wise Heart Fragment is easy to miss. Break the secret wall next to the wooden door to reach it.

ATK UP and DEF UP book locations in Paris Streets

Each ATK UP book permanently adds 1 ATK, and each DEF UP book adds 1 DEF. Paris Streets holds three of each, out of 14 of each in the whole game. A pop-up reading “ATK Up !” or “DEF Up !” confirms the pickup.

All nine Paris Streets clues and their Arcana cards

Clues come from spirits you talk to and from documents you examine. Each one fills in part of an Arcana card’s story.

The First Card unlocks automatically when the area begins. The ten rows above include all three Miser notes from the Bishop’s Office, which sit on desks there, one of them up on an upper desk.

A Lever for the Well is a puzzle as well as a clue. The spirit stands by the barrels in an upper room of the Ruined Market. Break the cracked wall in that barrel room, above the well, to find a wheel lever. Turning it opens the well grate, which is the only way down into the Central Sewer Drain.

Three Arcana come from Paris Streets bosses. The Fallen gives Holy Cross, Joan of Arc as The Warrior gives Infernal Pyre, and The Judge gives Chains of Justice. As you start the Prison Tower climb toward Joan, The Fallen warns Rose: “Be careful, young Belmont. The climb is high and fire is fierce.” Two movement skills are also learned in the area. Rose gets the Arcane Whip in the Abandoned Sewers and Holy Light on the Stairs to the Tower Roof.

Mirrors of Life, elevators and the Ferryman’s Wharf

Mirrors of Life save your progress, restore health, refill potions and work as fast-travel points. Each one is a tall mirror flanked by veiled statues.

  • Central Sewer Drain: the game’s first mirror, just past the drop down the well.
  • Undercity: the closest save for the Street of the Tomb Masons, Hospital and the tower roof.
  • Burned District: Find the room separating the Bridge of the Millers from the Burned District, then leave through the door on the left.
  • Prison Tower: on a wooden platform during the climb.
  • Gate to the Stone Bridge: next to the exit to the Main Hall.

The area has two elevators, one in the Prison Tower and one in the Upper Tower. At the end of the Prison Tower climb, a lift carries Rose up to the Upper Tower. The Ferryman’s Wharf is in the Abandoned Sewers, though you first meet the Ferryman at a different wharf in the Catacombs of Paris.

A few of the hidden spots need specific directions:

  • Path of the Rat: At the path’s starting point, a statue is on the ledge to the upper left. Break through the wall to find the whole meat.
  • Morgue: From the Street of the Tomb Masons, enter via the doorway with a red X overhead. On the lower floor, break the wooden rack to the right and reveal a statue.
  • Roof of the Tower: From the stairs, go past the locked wooden gate and climb the shaft beside it. Break the cracked block to the right of the middle ledge, near the narrow window.
  • Abandoned Sewers, Seer’s Hovel and Court of Miracles: each has one hidden passage with an XP statue inside.
  • Street of the Tomb Masons: its hidden passage holds two statues.

The Morgue is an optional side room. Once the statue is broken, leave through the red-X door in its bottom-right corner to get back to the Street of the Tomb Masons.

Paris Streets item stats: Weapons, Holy Cross and Brave Heart

Here are the game’s numbers for the two chest weapons whose full stat sheets you’ll compare most often.

Rarity / tierRefined, tier 2Ordinary, tier 1
ATK5025
Attack power2625

The two swords reward different habits. The Bastard sword deals extra damage when you attack right after a backdash or slide. The Burnt Sword of Fierbois lets you hold and release Attack for a charged, heavier blow. Both have the same stagger power, so the choice comes down to mobility or slower, heavier hits.

Holy Cross is a spell from The Fallen arcana that costs 50 mana and has 30 attack power. Rose sends a corrupted cross forward to damage enemies in its path; it returns after traveling a set distance or striking a wall.

Kill 5 enemies with the same crossMore damage the farther the cross is from Rose
Kill 10 enemies with a whip attackCatching it returns 10% mana per hit, up to 60%

The five kills with one cross do not have to happen at the same time. Works of Mercy earn points that you spend on gifts like the ones above.

Brave Heart Fragments are spread evenly across the map. There are 24 in total, three in each of eight areas: the Library, Main Hall, Notre-Dame, Clock Tower, Paris Streets, Hall of Mirrors, Catacombs of Paris and Holy Innocents’ Cemetery. Every set of four adds 20 maximum health, for six upgrades and 220 maximum health once all of them are collected. Collecting the three in Paris Streets puts you most of the way to your first upgrade. You need twelve fragments, the halfway point, before the Palace of Justice scales will balance for Valmanway.
