In Control Resonant, The Unknown Resonant appears as a side mission in the Quest Log under “Defeating Resonants.” Dylan Faden ventures into the Unknown—a patterned version of Central above the Oldest House—to investigate a distress call from FBC Rangers looking for Arish, the former security chief. The route culminates in a fight against the boss entity The Co-Director.
Quick answer: The Unknown Resonant closes with killing The Co-Director in the Unknown zone, which unlocks the Command ability. Work through the objectives below, from the distress call down to the elevator boss arena.
How to start The Unknown Resonant
The mission begins with the objective “Answer the Distress Call in the Unknown.” According to the Quest Log, Arish was suspended following the CFD disaster and has appeared in a Patterned district overlooking the Oldest House; his team is concerned he may have encountered a Resonant. The Rangers are in a Patterned replica of Central, and the marker directs you to the Varcons building in the Unknown.
You reach the area through the Gravity Well in the Unknown zone. Confirm the quest is active before you go, since several late objectives overlap in this region and not every Patterned FBC route leads to this boss.

From the Gravity Well, move to the ledge overlooking the inverted skyscrapers. Leap off and free-fall down through the sky gap between the buildings to reach street level in the alleyway below.
After you land, the objective changes to “Get to the Rangers.” Head into the facility garage and clear the corrupted enemies swarming the pinned FBC Rangers. Use levitation and air-dash to stay mobile while you thin the group.
Speak with the surviving Rangers. They explain Arish’s transmission and his mental state, and make clear they will not leave without him. Agree to help clear the path forward to continue.
Advance with the Rangers toward the first street barrier. The objective updates to “Disrupt the Pattern.” Break the pattern gate to open the panels and clear the way ahead.
Push into the gated corridor with the squad and defeat the ambush of distorted entities waiting there. Keep the Rangers alive by pulling aggro onto yourself with telekinesis throws.
Follow the inverted streets, then descend through the chute formed by the rotating car-ring turbine. This shaft takes you to the lower inverted streets; from there, climb across the rooftops.
At the next sealed checkpoint the objective becomes “Open the Gate for the Rangers.” Fight off the incoming hostile wave inside the dark industrial room before you can proceed.
When the gate stays locked, the objective shifts to “Look for a Way Around the Gate.” Move through the stairwells inside the building and climb out onto the adjacent exterior rooftops to bypass the barrier.
Reply over comms and drop down to the main courtyard steps. A large “Survive the Ambush” fight follows, with both airborne and ground corrupted enemies. Clear the entire courtyard to advance.
Enter the central lobby and activate the Patterned Field Office Fast Travel Door. You will see “Fast Travel Door Activated” confirming the new checkpoint.
While Arish talks incoherently over the radio, get into the elevator covered in red carpet alongside both Rangers. Ride upward to arrive at the boss arena.
The Co-Director boss and the Command reward
The elevator opens onto an open-air platform where the boss entity, The Co-Director, appears with the objective “Kill the Resonant.” The quest is named after the region, not the entity, which is why the Quest Log reads “The Unknown Resonant” while the boss you actually fight is The Co-Director.
Defeating The Co-Director grants Command. Earlier regional Resonants provide a choice between two rewards, but this fight grants one signature ability: Dylan can briefly make affected enemies attack their allies.
Killing a Resonant also pushes Manhattan into another Resonant Cycle, so this is a late encounter to take on when you are ready to advance the world state rather than the moment the quest appears.
You will know the mission is complete once The Co-Director is defeated, the “Kill the Resonant” objective clears, and Command is added to your combat abilities. The Patterned Field Office door remains available afterward if you need to return to the area.
