Crimson Desert: How to Track the Invader in the Crowcaller Quest

The objective only paints a wide search circle over Hernand Castle, so here is the exact door that ends it.

The “Track the invader” step in Crimson Desert’s Crowcaller quest is one of the few main story objectives that refuses to tell you where to go. Once the guards finish their story about ghosts loose in the keep, the minimap draws a large circle over Hernand Castle and leaves the rest to you. The target is a single room on the second floor, and you have already been inside it once before.

Quick answer: Enter the main castle building, turn right in the hallway and take the stairs up, then open the first wooden door on the left. That room is the Alchemist’s Chamber, and the Abyss Gate inside it completes the objective.

Crowcaller quest requirements and objective list

Crowcaller is the 65th main mission and sits in Chapter 5, sub-chapter Black and White. It only becomes available once The Missing Seal is finished, and it hands out no material reward — its payoff is story progress and the unlock for The Crow’s Warning.

The quest runs through four objectives in order:

  • Head to Hernand
  • Speak with the soldiers
  • Track the invader
  • Move to the Axiom Archive

Use the lantern to reveal the invader’s trail

Kliff’s lantern is the tracking tool the objective expects you to use. Open the radial menu with F2 on keyboard or the right direction on the gamepad d-pad, highlight the lantern and release the button to equip it. With the lantern out, hold Ctrl or RB to focus the beam.

Sweeping that focused light across the floor exposes a glowing line that runs toward the invader’s route, along with crow feathers hanging in the air inside the fortress. The same beam is how you confirm the right door upstairs — embers appear on its doorstep when the light hits it.

The trail is useful but not mandatory. If you remember the route from earlier in the story, you can walk straight to the door and skip the tracking entirely.

Route to the Alchemist’s Chamber in Hernand Castle

Fast travel back to Hernand town and make your way to the inner courtyard of Hernand Castle, near the church entrance where the earlier boss fight happened. Approaching the soldiers stationed there triggers the cutscene in which they describe chasing ghosts through the keep.
Head through the archway into the main castle building. The objective updates to “Track down the intruder at Hernand Castle” and a broad search circle appears on the minimap, but no precise marker is placed.

Pass the guards in the anteroom and continue into the hallway. They will shout at you, but none of them turn hostile, so there is no reason to stop and fight.

Inside the hallway of the main castle building, turn right. A staircase leads up from there — take it to the second floor.
At the top, turn right and move forward until a wooden door appears on the left. Two soldiers posted beside it are the visual confirmation that you have the right one. It is the same door used during the Mystical Key quest on your first visit to the castle.

Interact with the door to open it. The key Kliff already carries is used automatically, and the on-screen message reads “Key used to unlock the door” as it swings open.

Inside the Alchemist’s Chamber: Crow Feather and the Abyss Gate

The chamber is lined with books and scrolls, and a pixelated purple anomaly hovers inside. Interacting with it starts a short learning sequence that awards the Crow Feather knowledge and flips on a grey-scale sensory vision showing what happened in the room. That is the moment the quest objective changes to “Go to the Axiom Archive.”

The wall then opens into an Abyss Gate — the same glowing yellow portal you walked through during the Mystical Key quest. Step into it and Kliff is pulled to the Abyss, the sky map layer.

There is an Icy White Processed Crystal sitting on the table in the chamber. Taking it counts as stealing and costs you Contribution XP, so leave it alone unless you are fine with that trade.

If the Abyss Gate prompt does not appear

The interaction prompt on the gate occasionally fails to show up. When that happens, open the map, switch to the Abyss layer with the middle mouse button or the right stick, and use the fast travel point floating in the sky above Hernand — press R3 and then Triangle on PlayStation or Y on Xbox. You end up in the same place.

Reaching the Axiom Archive and clearing the Crow Brothers

You spawn on the sky island facing a tall tower structure. Run straight forward toward it. As you close in on the steps, a group of Crow Brothers pours out — there are a lot of them, so back up into open ground where you have room to dodge rather than letting them surround you on the stairs.

Fighting them is not strictly required. Pushing past the group and heading straight inside also works, since the trigger is reaching the interior of the Archive rather than clearing the enemies.

How to confirm the objective is complete

There are two checkpoints to watch for. The first is the “Knowledge Acquired” notification for Crow Feather in the Alchemist’s Chamber, which immediately rewrites the tracked objective in the quest log to “Go to the Axiom Archive.” If your quest log still reads “Track the invader” after leaving the room, you did not interact with the anomaly.

The second is the cutscene inside the Axiom Archive. Alustin is found badly wounded with a dagger through his chest, which vanishes from Kliff’s hand after he pulls it out, and he tells Kliff that White Crow has been taken. When that dialogue ends, Crowcaller is finished and The Crow’s Warning becomes available in Hernand.
