The God of War live-action series at Prime Video has found a possible new lead. Dave Bautista is in talks to take over the role of Kratos, stepping in after Ryan Hurst exited the project following an injury sustained during filming.

Quick answer: Dave Bautista is currently negotiating to play Kratos in Amazon and Sony’s God of War show. The deal is not yet confirmed, and no official release date has been set for the series.

Why Bautista fits the role of Kratos

Bautista is best known for playing Drax the Destroyer across the Guardians of the Galaxy films, and he spent years as a marquee performer in the WWE before moving into acting. His build, height, and shaved head line up closely with how Kratos appears in the modern God of War games, where the Spartan warrior is a hulking, weathered figure raised in the world of Norse mythology.

Beyond the physicality, Bautista has shown he can carry a stoic, restrained presence on screen. That matters for the rebooted games’ version of Kratos, who is defined as much by his quiet, guarded nature and his role as a reluctant father as by his brutality in combat.

Why Ryan Hurst is no longer playing Kratos

Ryan Hurst was originally cast as Kratos, but he tore his bicep while performing a stunt during filming in Vancouver earlier this year. The injury was serious enough that he was not expected to be available to return to the role until 2027.

Rather than pause production for several months to wait for his recovery, Amazon opted to recast the part. That decision is what opened the door for Bautista to enter negotiations.

Note: The injury has caused knock-on changes to the cast. The show is also recasting the actors playing Atreus, Kratos’ son, and Thrud, the daughter of Thor, as production reorganizes around the new lead.

If Bautista signs on, he would join a roster of actors already attached to the series, several of them playing key figures from the Norse pantheon.

Where the God of War show stands

The adaptation is a joint effort between Amazon and Sony, drawing on the franchise created by David Jaffe and developed by Santa Monica Studio. It was first announced in 2022 and went through several creative shifts before entering pre-production at the end of 2025.

With the recast underway, filming is expected to continue over the coming months, and the show is targeting a release at some point in 2027. There is no confirmed premiere date on Prime Video yet, and the Bautista deal still needs to close before he is officially locked in as Kratos.
