Kratos is not done. Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that its next God of War game will once again put the Ghost of Sparta in the lead, and that this future project links straight into the events of God of War Laufey. Cory Barlog, the studio’s head of creative, made the reveal on stage during the God of War Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026.

Quick answer: A new Kratos-led God of War game is in development and will release after God of War Laufey, connecting directly to Laufey’s story. No title, platform, or release window has been announced. Laufey itself launches February 16, 2027.

What Barlog confirmed about the next Kratos game

The confirmation is short on specifics, but it settles one question: Faye’s spin-off is not a permanent handoff. Barlog said the next Kratos story arrives after Laufey and feeds off its plot, positioning both games as parts of the same continuing arc rather than separate detours.

On stage, Barlog framed Laufey as the setup. “Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next,” he told the room. He added that “everything in the game is setting up for something so amazing,” pointing to how Laufey builds toward the Kratos title that follows it.

Because Laufey does not arrive until early 2027, the Kratos follow-up is likely still years out. Nothing at the panel indicated a release window, and Santa Monica did not say whether this is a full mainline entry or a smaller project in the mold of the 2D spin-off God of War Sons of Sparta.

How it connects to God of War Laufey

God of War Laufey shifts the spotlight to Faye, Kratos’ late wife from the Norse saga. Her story plays out in the afterlife of the gods, where she battles fallen deities from multiple pantheons while working to protect and aid her family. Kratos is not playable in Laufey, though he has already turned up briefly in early footage, and Faye’s goal of assisting Kratos and Atreus from the afterlife creates the throughline into his next chapter.

Barlog has been consistent that the series will keep returning to Kratos. He has described the character as the “trunk” of the franchise’s tree, the one who “drives the franchise forward,” while arguing that Laufey is “not a departure” but an “expansion” of that world. Laufey director Ariel Lawrence put it more plainly, saying the team “can’t not tell stories about the big guy.”

When God of War Laufey releases

Santa Monica closed the Comic-Con panel by locking in Laufey’s launch. The game is set for February 16, 2027, as a PS5 exclusive, and it can already be wishlisted on the PlayStation Store. Pre-order dates and edition details have not been shared yet.

The panel itself brought together much of the cast, including Kratos actor Christopher Judge, Deborah Ann Woll, Jack Quaid, and Perlina Lau, alongside Lawrence. Quaid voices Phranque, the blue cube character Barlog said has “been around since the beginning.”

Don’t confuse it with the trilogy remake

This new Kratos game is a separate project from the remake of the original God of War trilogy, which Santa Monica announced earlier during a February State of Play. The remake revisits the older games, while the newly confirmed title pushes the modern story forward. Both keep Kratos in the picture, meaning there is more of him on the way even beyond Laufey’s turn with Faye.

Kratos has headlined every God of War release, with the notable exception of God of War Ragnarok handing players control of Atreus for stretches of that game. Laufey continues that experiment by centering someone new, but the studio’s message at Comic-Con was clear enough: the road runs back to Kratos, and his next adventure begins where Faye’s leaves off.
