Qingxiao arrived in Wuthering Waves Version 3.6 as an Aero sword main DPS built entirely around Tune Strain, and Denia rerun alongside her in the same half. That pairing created an obvious question for anyone holding limited Astrites: is Denia a requirement for the new Aero carry, or just one of several teammates who can feed her engine?
Quick answer: No. Run Qingxiao with Mornye and slot either Denia or Lynae in the third spot — against a Level 100 Sentry Construct: Gargoyle on Hazard Tower Floor 1, both versions of the team finished in 1 minute and 36 seconds, leaving 03:21 on the clock.

The comparison held everything constant except the third slot. Same floor, same boss, same support in Mornye, same player. Denia went first, Lynae went second, and the timer stopped at the same number both times.

That is a single-target boss check, which is the scenario Qingxiao is built for. It is also the exact scenario where Denia’s grouping and crowd control matter least, so the parity is not a fluke of the fight — it is a fair read on what each teammate contributes when there is only one thing to hit.
Build conditions behind the comparison
Every character in both runs was Level 90/90 with a fully unlocked S6 Resonance Chain and a Rank 1 five-star weapon. That matters when you read the result: this is a maxed-out account, not a fresh one, so the numbers show what each teammate adds when neither is under-invested.

Qingxiao’s offensive line was 2,551 ATK with 84.5% Crit Rate and 283.8% Crit DMG at 116.8% Energy Regen, running her signature Glint of Clouds and a maxed Forte. Worth noting for your own build: her dedicated Sonata set is Heart of Evil’s Purge, with the 4-Cost Calamity Effigy as its matching main Echo, so the Sierra Gale setup used here is not her ceiling.
The two candidates for the third slot are close on paper. Denia sat at 2,130 ATK with 76.1% Crit Rate and 271.2% Crit DMG; Lynae at 1,953 ATK with 69.7% Crit Rate and 270.2% Crit DMG. Denia had the higher raw stat line of the two and still did not pull ahead on the clock.
Why the swap works: Qingxiao scales off Tune Strain, not off Denia
Qingxiao’s damage does not key off any one teammate. She applies Tune Strain – Shifting with her own skills and responds to Tune Strain – Interfered, and every time a Resonator on the team inflicts Tune Strain – Interfered on a target, that target picks up a stack of Mindlock.
Mindlock is where the payoff lands. It stacks up to 15 times, and each stack amplifies the damage a target takes from Heavy Attack – Stringblade, Basic Attack and Dodge Counter in Ephemeral Transcendence, Heaven’s Reckoning, and her Resonance Liberation by 2%, with an extra 5% per stack for the first seven. Against Overlord Class or Calamity Class targets — a Gargoyle boss included — each Tune Strain – Interfered application lands an additional Mindlock stack on top.
The rule that follows is simple. Any teammate who can push Tune Strain – Interfered onto the target keeps her amplification loop running. Denia does it. Lynae does it. Neither one is doing something the other cannot.
What Denia still offers outside the Qingxiao slot
Reading “you don’t need her” as “she’s not worth pulling” would be the wrong takeaway. Denia’s case is roster-wide, not Qingxiao-specific.
- She is the only sub-DPS for the Fusion Burst archetype, which makes her effectively mandatory there rather than optional.
- Her ability to switch between her two modes lets her slot into Tune Strain teams as well, so she covers more than one archetype.
- She holds high value alongside Aemeath, Luuk Herssen, Paragon of Mengzhou, and Luuk Herssen’s Tune Strain lineups.
- Her AoE grouping and crowd control clean up multi-target content for single-target-oriented carries — the one thing a Floor 1 boss test cannot show.
Note: both Qingxiao and Denia lean hard on their signature weapons. If you pull either without the matching five-star, expect a meaningful gap versus the numbers above.

If you are pulling Qingxiao herself, the investment ladder is unchanged. Take her with the signature weapon first, then S2 for the Heavy Attack – Stringblade and Mindlock breakpoint, then S3 for the Resonance Liberation Crit DMG jump, where the Qingxiao, Denia, and Mornye lineup becomes especially competitive. Priority on skills is Forte Circuit, then Resonance Liberation, then Basic Attack, with Resonance Skill and Intro Skill last.
So Denia is a genuinely strong, flexible sub-DPS who happens not to be the gatekeeper for the new Aero carry. Pull her because your Fusion Burst or Luuk Herssen teams want her, and let Lynae handle the third slot next to Qingxiao if she is already sitting in your roster.
