Dokkodo fills Kyoto and Nara with two broad kinds of characters: peaceful NPCs who run shops, hand out quests and move the story forward, and hostile foes you can challenge to a duel to the death for Lootboxes, Karma and gear. Knowing which NPC sells what, who starts which questline, and which roaming enemies pay out the most lets you plan your route through both regions. Each group below is laid out with the exact rewards and behavior tied to it.
Passive NPCs
These NPCs do not fight. They run shops, give quests, and advance the storyline. The Teamaster and Stablemaster operate shops; the rest serve as story characters or quest-givers.
| Image | NPC | Role / Location | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teamaster | Shop, found inside the Teahouse | Sells Tea: 11 Mon | |
![]() | Yoshioka Seijuro | Story NPC | The first samurai you find in the main storyline |
![]() | Takuan Soho | Story NPC | Starts the questline via the option “I’m here to make a name for myself.”; also offers guidance on your Way and your Spirit |
![]() | Hozoin In’ei | — | — |
![]() | Commander | Quest-giver | Questgiver for Commander’s Favor |
![]() | Stable Hand | Located at the Horse Stable | Quest giver for Stolen Hooves |
![]() | Hustler | Located near the Dicehouse | Quest giver for Losers an Winners |
![]() | Stablemaster | Shop, located at the Horse Stable | Sells horses (see horse shop below) |
![]() | Capital Ashigaru at Nara | Quest-giver | Questgiver for Soldier’s Endorsement |
Takuan Soho can be approached for guidance as well as for starting the questline. Choosing “Ask about your Way” points you toward the dojos across the land—some for swords, some for spears—where you train under their banners, learn their techniques and can test yourself against the students. Choosing “Ask about your Spirit” points you toward shrines: with each battle your Spirit stirs, and when it is ready a shrine may grant you something uncommon, with a bit of coin or a worthy kill able to tip fate in your favor.

Roaming NPCs (Duelable Foes)
Roaming NPCs wander Kyoto and Nara and can be challenged to a duel to the death. Win and you are granted the rewards listed below. Ronin and Elite Ronins additionally drop the accessory they had equipped. Nara hosts the higher-paying foes—Mercenaries, the Sohei Group and Elite Ronins each award 2x Lootbox, with the Sohei Group and Elite Ronins paying out the most Karma of the wandering enemies.

Named Enemies
These foes are tied to specific quests or events and drop weapon parts and components alongside Lootboxes and Karma. Hozoin Inshun appears during “The Second Spear” quest, while Commander Kurogane spawns as a wave enemy in the Kyoto Outpost raid.

Whether you are stocking up on Tea, saving toward a Samurai Horse, or hunting the Sohei Group and Elite Ronins for their richer Karma payouts, the foes of Kyoto and Nara reward you in Lootboxes, Karma and gear—and the named enemies tied to “The Second Spear” and the Kyoto Outpost raid are the path to Yari and Odachi parts.
