Don’t Starve Together: How to Get Gears and Scrap

Every gear source in Don't Starve Together, from chess set clockworks and junk piles to ruins loot and drop chances.

Every gear source in Don’t Starve Together, from chess set clockworks and junk piles to ruins loot and drop chances.

Gears are the bottleneck resource in Don’t Starve Together. You need them for the Ice Box, the Ice Flingomatic, the Insulated Pack, the Weather Pain, the Divining Rod, the Telepad, and every WX-78 upgrade — and the surface world only hands out a fixed number of them before the well runs dry.

Quick answer: Kill Clockwork Knights, Bishops, and Rooks at chess set pieces for two gears each. Once those are gone, farm tumbleweeds in the desert, dig graves, dredge sunken chests, harvest junk piles, and clear the Ruins — then reset the Ruins by killing the Ancient Fuelweaver to make every clockwork and broken pile respawn.

Clockworks at chess set pieces: the biggest early payout

The three surface clockworks — Knight, Bishop, and Rook — each drop two gears when killed, which makes them the densest source in the game. They sit around set pieces marked by Maxwell statues and marble pillars, scattered across the overworld. Sweep the map early, note every chess biome you pass, and come back once you have a decent weapon and armor.

Fight them by kiting. Rooks charge in a straight line, Knights swing in melee, and Bishops fire ranged shots, so hit two or three times and back off rather than trading blows. Once a surface clockwork dies, it does not come back, so treat that pool as a one-time budget for your world.

Junk piles and the Scrappy Werepig

The Junkyard holds the large teetering junk pile, which can be harvested roughly once a day or every couple of days for scrap and a chance at a gear. That pile stays in the world permanently, so it is worth adding to your daily route if your base sits nearby.

The smaller scrap piles around it are the renewable part. Kill the Nightmare Werepig and the Scrappy Werepig spawns, and it throws out fresh small scrap piles that can each roll for gears. That loop is the only way to keep the Junkyard producing after you have picked it clean.

Bring an empty backpack. Harvesting scrap fills inventory slots fast, and you will start getting the “Drop 2” prompt mid-run if you show up loaded with tools and food.

Renewable surface gears: tumbleweeds, sunken chests, graves, and the trader

Tumbleweeds rolling through the desert have a 1% chance to contain a gear. The rate is low, but they never stop spawning, so a base near the Dragonfly Desert turns idle walking into a slow gear income. Sunken chests are the better bet at 10% per chest — find message-in-a-bottle spots out on the ocean and dredge them up. Those two are the surface world’s only genuinely renewable pickups.

Graves pay out 3.07% each and are finite, but there are a lot of them. Carry a shovel and dig every cluster you find in Forest and Mosaic biomes, plus the graves inside the Labyrinth. Digging also risks angering ghosts, so keep a weapon equipped.

The wandering trader also stocks gears. The exchange is three Pig Skin for one gear, which is trivially cheap if you have a pig village on your route.

The Ruins: where the real gear stockpile is

If you have never gone underground, that is almost certainly why you are short. The Ruins are packed with damaged clockworks and scrap, far beyond what the surface holds.

Kill the damaged clockworks you find. Damaged Knights and Rooks drop one gear each. Damaged Bishops drop nothing, so skip them unless they are blocking your path.
Hammer every pile of broken clockworks. Each pile has a 25% chance of a gear. If you can spare one, repairing a pile with a gear gives you an extra roll on the drop table.
Hammer the broken Ancient Pseudoscience Stations scattered through the Ruins. Each one has an 11.2% chance to yield a single gear.
Kill the Ancient Guardian and open the Large Ornate Chest behind it. There is a 33% chance the chest contains three or more gears in one go.

Note: Do the Ruins during a lull in nightmare cycles and bring a light source. Nightmare Creatures spawn in waves and will interrupt long hammering sessions.

Reset the Ruins with the Ancient Fuelweaver

Killing the Ancient Fuelweaver regenerates the entire Ruins. Damaged clockworks return, broken clockwork piles reappear, and the Pseudoscience Stations are restored, which means the full underground gear haul becomes farmable again on every reset. Clockworks across the world regenerate with it. That fight is the long-term answer for anyone who has stripped their map bare and does not want to start a new world.

You will know the reset worked the moment you re-enter: rubble and defeated mobs are back in their original positions, and previously hammered piles are standing again.

Spawn your own clockworks with Suspicious Marble

Suspicious Marble pieces attach to the larger marble chunks in the Shadow Pieces arena to rebuild a Rook, Bishop, and Knight statue. What happens next depends on the moon phase. On a full moon, breaking the statues spawns ordinary clockworks that drop their usual two gears each. On a new moon, they spawn the Shadow Pieces boss fight instead, which is a much rougher encounter — check the sky before you swing.

The payoff is that the fight also yields a sketch, letting you craft more marble sculptures and repeat the process. That turns the arena into a repeatable gear farm rather than a one-off.

What to spend your first gears on

ItemGear costWhat it does
Ice Box1Doubles food freshness and cools thermal stones
Ice Flingomatic2Puts out fires and protects the base through summer
Insulated Pack1Backpack that preserves food while you travel
Weather Pain1Weapon that launches whirlwinds at mobs and structures
WX-78 upgrade1 per gear eatenRestores health, hunger, and sanity, and permanently raises stats up to a cap

On a fresh world, one gear into an Ice Box pays for itself immediately. Two more into an Ice Flingomatic will save your base the first time summer sets it on fire. If a WX-78 player is on the server, remember that every gear they eat is one that never becomes a fridge — worth agreeing on before the surface clockworks are all dead.
