Moon Rock is one of the few materials in Don’t Starve Together that you cannot dig, chop, or trade your way into. It falls from the sky in specific places, and it can be manufactured on demand at a single set piece if you are willing to do the prep work. Both routes need the same tool.
Quick answer: Bring a pickaxe to a meteor field (the Stone Biome), mine the pale boulders marked on your map with a light, jagged rock icon, and pick up the loose Moon Rocks lying on the ground around them. Each boulder drops Moon Rock and Flint.
Moon Rock locations: Meteor fields and the Stone Biome
Moon Rock comes down in meteor showers, and those showers only land on meteor fields. A default world generates at least two of them. One sits in the mosaic biome, and another spawns in a friendlier, more walkable biome, often bordering desert or open rocky ground. On the map they read as a grey, cratered patch dotted with boulders.
The important part is that meteors keep falling whether or not you are standing there. You do not need to trigger a shower, camp the field, or be online for it. Walk away, come back several days later, and there will be fresh boulders and loose rocks waiting. Treat the fields like a slow crop rather than a one-time pickup.
Caves do not supply Moon Rock. If your world feels short on it, the answer is almost always that you cleared your meteor fields once and never went back.

Every Moon Rock source compared
| Source | What you need | Yield and repeatability |
|---|---|---|
| Meteor field boulders | Pickaxe | Moon Rock plus Flint per boulder; refills on its own as meteors keep falling |
| Loose ground rocks | Nothing | Small amounts, picked up by hand; respawns with each shower |
| Suspicious Moonrock sculptures | Pickaxe | Moon Rock from the petrified werepig and hound statues at the Moon Stone; one-time unless you run the event |
| Moon Rubble | Pickaxe | None. Petrified rabbits, birds and spiders do not drop Moon Rock |
| Moon Stone event | Star Caller’s Staff, Full Moon, mobs to petrify | Largest haul; repeatable every Full Moon |
Farming Moon Rock at the Moon Stone with a Star Caller’s Staff
The Moon Stone set piece is the only renewable, on-demand Moon Rock source in the game. It sits in dense Evergreen Forest, ringed by Moon Rubble and petrified statues. Triggering its event turns every hound and werepig in the area into stone you can mine, which is why it out-produces meteor fields by a wide margin.

Tip: You can end the event early by pulling the staff out. The monsters still turn back to moonstone, which is useful if you only care about the rocks and not the staff upgrade. Inserting and removing the staff also resets the event timer.
Pig House ring for bulk Moon Rock
Wild hounds and werepigs arrive in limited numbers. Supplying your own pigs is how you turn a single Full Moon into multiple stacks of Moon Rock.

Confirming it worked, and why the event fails
You know a mining run succeeded when the boulder breaks and both Moon Rock and Flint hit the ground. You know the Moon Stone event succeeded when the enemies on screen lock into stone and the staff in the altar reads as a Moon Caller’s Staff instead of a Star Caller’s Staff.
Two failure cases are worth knowing. If you insert the staff outside a Full Moon night, nothing triggers at all. If the hounds and werepigs break the Moon Stone before the timer runs out, the remaining monsters still freeze into Suspicious Moonrock or Moon Rubble, so the night is not wasted. Your staff is not destroyed either. Repair the base with Moon Rock and run it again on the next Full Moon.
For most worlds the practical rhythm is simple. Sweep both meteor fields whenever you pass them, and set up the Moon Stone with fossil walls and a pig ring once you have Ruins access. That combination keeps Moon Rock flowing instead of leaving you counting a fixed pile that never grows.
