Three strong heroes do not make a strong team in DragonSword: Awakening. Combat runs on a loop where one character sets a status ailment, a second answers it with a Signal Skill, and a third keeps the pressure going. If your party cannot create the entry condition the next hero needs, raw damage stops mattering fast. Because the PC release drops gacha pulls, every hero unlocks through normal story progression, so every team here is reachable by playing.
Quick answer: Run Theresia, Reina, and Castella for the strongest all-purpose lineup. Swap to Theresia, Castella, and Lute for long boss fights, and start new accounts with Lute, Theresia, and Ornette until more heroes unlock.

How status ailments and Signal Skills decide every team
Elites and bosses carry heavy power armor, so plain hits will not break them. Attacking fills an ailment gauge, and once it fills the enemy is afflicted with an effect such as Bleed, Stun, Airborne, Knockdown, or Knockback. That affliction is the payoff, because it opens a Signal opportunity.
When the active hero applies an ailment, your off-field heroes flash a prompt on screen. Tapping the matching swap button brings that companion in with a Signal Skill, an entrance attack that deals far more than their normal kit and stacks the next ailment. A visible portrait alone does not mean the Signal is ready. You have to wait for the real ailment state, then swap inside a narrow window.
Every complete lineup fills three jobs. A field driver stays active and creates the next repeatable condition. A Signal answer enters when that condition lights up. A bridge extends pressure or restores spacing before handing the fight back. Keep a fallback ready for moments when Super Armor blocks the normal launch or juggle.

Add to Google Preferences →The best all-around team: Theresia, Reina, and Castella
This trio is the current benchmark for endgame content and works across almost every activity. Theresia switches between Consecration and Celestial Verdict to apply Bleed or Stun, and her Divine Arc delivers some of the highest burst damage in the game. Reina lifts grounded enemies with Rising Cutter or Wind Slayer and keeps them suspended, while Castella swoops in on stunned or downed targets for a heavy finisher.
Together they maintain near-constant pressure. Theresia stacks status effects, Reina holds enemies airborne where they cannot retaliate, and Castella detonates the combo. The result is long combo chains, strong crowd control against groups, and scaling that stays top tier deep into the endgame.
Team picks by content type
Bosses reward sustained damage and armor breaking, while open-world clears reward mobility and crowd control. Match the lineup to the fight instead of forcing one party everywhere.
| Team | Best for | Core loop |
|---|---|---|
| Theresia + Castella + Lute | Boss fights | Theresia carries damage, Lute breaks armor and adds utility, Castella bursts during stagger windows |
| Theresia + Roxy + Castella (or Lute) | Bleed against high-HP targets | Consecration applies Bleed, Celestial Verdict adds Stun, Roxy tags in, Castella or Lute detonates the stacks |
| Reina + Roxy + Ornette | Open-world exploration | Reina finishes fights fast, Roxy bridges combos, Ornette shields the party |
| Theresia + Roxy + Lute | Elite enemies | Bleed application plus armor break and stuns keep elites disabled |
| Ornette + Castella + Alex (or Lute) | Heavily armored bosses | Ornette or Alex strips power armor, a Knockdown triggers, Castella capitalizes on downed damage |
Airborne combo team: Reina, Theresia, and Roxy
Airborne is one of the strongest mechanics in the game because suspended enemies cannot attack back or trigger defensive parries. Reina is the primary launcher, Theresia handles air combo damage, and Roxy extends the chain so the target spends most of the fight helpless.
An alternative aerial squad runs Reina, Castella, and Lute (or Aria). Reina launches with Rising Cutter, triggers Tempest, Lute stretches the juggle, and Castella slams the target down with a heavy overhead finisher. Note: airborne teams lose value the moment Super Armor keeps an enemy planted, so keep an armor-break option ready.

Beginner team: Lute, Theresia, and Ornette
You unlock Theresia and Ornette early, and this party does not demand frame-perfect inputs. Theresia handles status application, Ornette provides shields and stability as a safety net, and Lute acts as flexible damage with a bit of healing for hard boss fights. It is balanced rather than optimal, but it teaches the Signal loop while keeping you alive.
If you unlock a different starter set first, Alex, Aria, and Roxy also cover the basics. Alex holds the front line and applies Knockdown, Aria builds Shock from range, and Roxy adds steady damage and Bleed. You can rotate Ornette out for Roxy to lean into Bleed, or drop Theresia for Castella to shift toward stagger and control.
Ranged and action lineups for tougher fights
Two Level 70 lineups cover different play styles when encounters get punishing. The ranged team is the calmer, more repeatable option while you learn a boss. The action team gives more movement and aggression but leans hard on execution.
| Team | Best for | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Cerese / Othello / Dana | Learning boss patterns and keeping arena visibility | Retreating into a wall and losing space |
| Charlotte / Johnny / Reina | Aerial pressure, fast reactions, frequent switching | Losing Charlotte before the next safe handoff |
| Cerese / Othello / Reina | Dana replacement that adds ground mobility | More pressure on Reina’s entry timing |
In the ranged team, Cerese and Dana trade field time based on position and skill availability, while Othello holds the fixed job of stepping in when the boss closes distance and reopening space. Move sideways after his close-range phase rather than straight back, or you pin yourself to a wall. In the action team, Charlotte drives active pressure, Johnny returns the sequence to the ground quickly, and Reina uses her separate sprint and dodge to reposition.
Hero tiers and roles
Placement here weighs full team value, not personal damage alone. An A-tier hero inside the correct Signal sequence will outperform an S-tier hero whose entry condition never fires.
| Tier | Heroes | Role and specialty |
|---|---|---|
| S | Theresia, Reina, Castella | Elite status primer, airborne launcher and juggler, heavy burst finisher |
| A | Roxy, Lute, Ornette | Fast sub-DPS and combo bridge, versatile utility with armor break, defensive shields |
| B | Alex, Aria | Situational tank, armor break, and ranged Shock support |
Theresia inflicts Bleed with Consecration and Stun with Celestial Verdict, which lets her slot into damage-over-time, control, and beginner teams alike. Reina is mandatory for aerial builds because her Signal Skills catch and hold falling targets. Castella only needs a moment on the field, entering on stunned or downed enemies for a big single-hit burst. Roxy stacks ailments quickly, Lute glues teams together with balanced damage and healing, and Ornette absorbs hits so damage dealers stay safe.
How to build stronger teams
Pick a single main damage dealer instead of splitting resources across several. Off-field heroes matter as much as your on-field one, so if your setup characters die in a single hit, the whole rotation falls apart.
- Build teammates that trigger or extend your main hero’s ailments rather than simply adding more raw damage.
- Include at least one utility hero who can shield, stagger, or reduce enemy defenses.
- Practice tag timing, since clean Signal execution adds more damage than stronger gear alone.
- Watch your stamina, which controls dodging, heavy attacks, and traversal, and running dry mid-phase causes avoidable deaths.
- Equip Familiars and cook meals for passive buffs to status application and stamina on top of your three active heroes.
When a lineup underperforms, separate two failures before you swap heroes. A synergy problem means your current heroes never create the condition the next Signal input needs. A build problem means the team works mechanically but its gear, Karma, or skills are not ready. Changing characters does not fix weak gear, and more gear does not fix a Signal chain that never starts. If you want one team to invest in first, Theresia, Reina, and Castella remain the safest pick, with Roxy, Lute, and Ornette kept upgraded for flexibility across different encounters.
