Romance is one of the core loops in Fields of Mistria, and building a relationship with a marriage candidate comes down to two things: unlocking heart quests as your relationship deepens, and handing over gifts they actually like. There are six bachelors to pursue, each tied to a different job in town and each with their own list of loved and liked items.
Quick answer: The six bachelors are Balor, March, Eiland, Hayden, Ryis, and Caldarus. Only Caldarus requires main-story progress to romance; the other five can be pursued from early on by chatting daily and giving loved gifts. Hand a loved gift on a candidate’s birthday for the biggest single friendship boost.
The six bachelors and where to find them
Each bachelor keeps a daily schedule tied to their work, so knowing their job makes them easy to track down for conversations and gifts. Five are available from the start of your save; Caldarus, the Dragon Guardian, only opens up once you advance the main story.

Caldarus: the story-locked bachelor
Caldarus is the Dragon Guardian of Mistri who lets you improve your skills, and he works differently from every other bachelor. You cannot simply grind conversations and gifts to unlock him from day one; his romance is tied to the main story.
Progressing “The Water Tablet,” “The Earth Tablet,” and “Breaking the Fire Seal” automatically raises you to six hearts with him. Once you reach eight hearts, the “Life in This Form” heart quest unlocks. His preferred gifts favor hearty cooked meals and dishes made with your own produce.

How gifting and hearts work
Hearts measure how close you are to a candidate, and every two hearts unlocks a new heart quest. The jewel next to a candidate’s name changes color at each two-heart threshold, which gives you a quick visual check on your progress.
To raise hearts, talk to your chosen partner each day and give them a gift they like or love. When a heart quest becomes available, you receive a letter in the mail telling you where to meet them; if no letter arrives, check the request board for a post marked with a heart. Loved gifts move the needle the most, and giving a loved gift on the candidate’s birthday grants an extra friendship bonus, so it pays to plan around those dates.
