Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave: How to Unlock the Blacksmith Class

Boost ten combat arts on Dietrich's route, then certify the axe-and-black-magic Advanced class at an Exam Proctor.

Boost ten combat arts on Dietrich’s route, then certify the axe-and-black-magic Advanced class at an Exam Proctor.

The Blacksmith is an Advanced infantry class in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave that wields both axes and black magic. You unlock it during Dietrich’s route by upgrading combat arts at Smyrnos’s temple in Dagsion, and once it is unlocked it becomes available to eligible units across your other playthroughs.

Quick answer: On Dietrich’s route, boost 10 combat arts at Smyrnos’s temple in Dagsion using Magic Echo Shards, then talk to the temple caretaker to trigger the “Class Unlocked: Blacksmith” scene.

Blacksmith unlock requirements

The unlock itself only happens on Dietrich’s route, and it is tied to reaching a friendship level with Smyrnos alongside boosting combat arts. Certifying a unit afterward is a separate step that has its own exam requirements.

The exam is not pass-or-fail by chance alone. Higher character level and higher Black Magic and Axe ranks raise your displayed pass chance, so aim for 75% or better before you spend a license.

Unlock the Blacksmith class at Smyrnos’s temple

Once in Dagsion, go into Smyrnos’s temple. After speaking with Smyrnos, move toward the Temple Reception, marked by a yellow diamond icon.
At the reception’s Divine Service menu, choose Boost Combat Arts. Each upgrade strengthens one combat art into its “+” version, for example Gale Spear into Gale Spear+, and the cheapest options cost 20 Magic Echo Shards each.

Improve ten or more distinct combat arts. A notice appears after each successful upgrade—for example, “Dietrich has learned the following Combat Art: Gale Spear+”—so continue until you reach ten.
Return to the temple and speak to the caretaker again. A cutscene with Smyrnos plays and the “Class Unlocked: Blacksmith” notification appears, confirming that new certification exams are now available.

Farm Magic Echo Shards for the ten upgrades

Ten upgrades can quickly drain your Magic Echo Shard supply. If you run short, leave Dagsion for the world map and use skirmishes to restock before finishing the boosts.

On the world map, use the Answerer’s Cry action to reveal skirmishes within its search radius. Enemy packs such as an Animal Pack appear as targets you can engage.

Deploy your units into the skirmish, for example at Rolling Breeze Hill, and clear the enemies. You can use Auto-Battle to speed through these fights while collecting shard drops.

Travel by carriage to other regions, such as Salacia Posthouse, to trigger additional skirmishes and gather more shards. Repeat until you have enough to complete all ten upgrades.

Certify a unit into Blacksmith

Unlocking the class only makes it available. To actually reclass a character, visit an Exam Proctor, such as the one in Hightown, and take the Advanced Exam for Blacksmith. You need an Advanced License, and the exam screen shows the pass chance, ideal level and renown requirement before you commit.

The game autosaves before showing the result, so you cannot reload to retry a failed attempt. Confirm your pass chance is high enough first. Once the exam passes, the unit gains the Blacksmith class and can switch back to it for free at any time afterward.

Blacksmith class stats and abilities

Blacksmith is a flexible axe wielder that can also cast black magic. It moves 5 tiles, favors Axe skill EXP, and leans defensively thanks to its bonus and growth spread.

The class also grants a Skill EXP bonus of Axe +3, Black Magic +1 and Infantry +1. Its abilities are what make it distinct:

  • Black-Magic Seeker (class ability): multiplies black magic uses by 2.
  • Axe Hit +5 (class ability): grants Hit +5 while equipped with an axe.
  • Makeshift (master ability): 10% chance to reduce weapon durability cost to 0 when using a combat art.

Because the unlock is stored account-wide once it fires on Dietrich’s Path, you only need to boost those ten combat arts a single time. After that, any unit who meets the Advanced License, level and skill requirements can sit the exam whenever it suits your build.
