Fisch: How to Get to the Obsidian Trench (Mariana’s Awakening Questline)

The Obsidian Trench is a hidden layer buried beneath Mariana’s Veil, and reaching it means working through the full Mariana’s Awakening questline rather than sailing straight in. You have to earn five Gauntlets from five layer guardians, solve a riddle at the Obsidian Pocket, and present a specific mutated Scylla to force open the Abyss Gate.

Quick answer: Complete all five Mariana’s Veil layer quests to collect the five Gauntlets, then read the Crevice Wall riddle at the Obsidian Pocket, catch the matching mutated Scylla with the matching rod, and hold it at the altar to open the Abyss Gate into the Obsidian Trench.

What you need before starting

This progression assumes you can already travel through Mariana’s Veil and its five existing layers. Each layer forces you to buy or own a specific rod, so bring a large coin balance. The rod purchases alone add up to 850,000 C$ across the first four layers.

Access to Mariana’s Veil and all five layers.

Every quest catch must meet an exact bait, weather, cycle, and season combination, and several require perfect catches. Line up those conditions before casting rather than fishing blind.

Start the questline at Roslit Bay

Sail or glide to the shore at Roslit Bay. The quest-giver stands on the beach ledge with a Talk prompt above them.

Start the Mariana’s Awakening questline by talking to Veylor. He asks you to investigate the luminous mineral veins now found in every layer of Mariana’s Veil, all five of them.

Clear all five Mariana’s Veil layers

Each layer has its own descendant guardian, a required rod you buy on the spot, and two mutation-specific catch quests. Complete both catches, return to the guardian, and you earn that layer’s Gauntlet. Use the Traveler’s Whistle to hop between the layers below.

Volcanic Vents (Ignis)

Find Ignis opposite the Volcanic Rod in the Volcanic Vents. Buy the rod, then catch 2 Ashen Fortune Charred Coelacanth as perfect catches and 1 Ashen Fortune Obsidian-Plated Piranha. Turn both in for the Volcanic Gauntlets.

Challenger’s Deep (Glacius)

Glacius stands opposite the Challenger’s Rod in Challenger’s Deep. Catch 3 Chilled Hoarfrost Halibut and 1 Chilled Glacial Gulper (perfect catch) to claim the Challenger’s Gauntlet.

Abyssal Zenith (Tenebris)

Cross to Tenebris on the third layer. Gliding over the Anglerfish Pond avoids attacks on the way in. Catch 2 Wrath Lumin-Lure Lanternfish and 1 Wrath Void-Drifter Jelly (perfect catch) to receive the Abyssal Gauntlet.

Calm Zone (Luminis)

Luminis waits in the colorful Calm Zone layer. Catch 4 Prismize Geode Grouper and 2 Prismize Pearl-Plated Pleco (perfect catch), then hand them in for the layer’s Gauntlet.

Veil of the Forsaken (Resonus)

The final guardian, Resonus, sits among the colored crystals in the Veil of the Forsaken. Using the Leviathan’s Fang Rod, catch 5 Gargoyle Goby and 3 Wraith-Whisper Ray, all as perfect catches, to earn the Veiled Gauntlet and complete the layer requirements.

Find the Obsidian Pocket and read the Crevice Wall riddle

With all five layer quests done, return to the Veil of the Forsaken and drop into the dark void hole. You land inside the Obsidian Pocket, a hidden sub-area below the layer.

Inside, inspect the glowing text carved into the Crevice Wall. This riddle is personalized and tells you which mutated Scylla you must offer. Two examples that appear on the wall are:

When its scales turn brittle and icy currents sway, its chilled domain shall light the way.
When its scales glisten in colorful glory, its prismized domain shall light the way.

If the wording is unclear, travel back to Roslit Bay and talk to Veylor. He reads out the exact rod and Scylla mutation tied to your active riddle.

Match the riddle to a mutated Scylla

The riddle’s theme maps to one Scylla mutation and the matching layer rod. Fish up a Scylla with that mutation using the rod shown below.

The mutation and rod must match your specific riddle. Bringing the wrong mutated Scylla will not light the pedestals, so confirm with Veylor before you commit to fishing.

Open the Abyss Gate and enter the Obsidian Trench

Return to the Obsidian Pocket with the correct mutated Scylla in your inventory.

Present the Scylla at the altar. All of the colored crystal pedestals light up, which triggers the giant Abyss Gate to open.

Walk through the open gate to step directly into the Obsidian Trench. You will see the confirmation message, “The Obsidian Trench is open to you now. Tread carefully down there.”

That message and the crystal-lit environment on the far side of the gate are how you know the ritual worked. Once inside, an environmental debuff called Trench Suppression starts building up. Interact with the glowing white crystals scattered around the trench to temporarily purge your suppression and keep exploring safely.
