Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4 carries the name Override, and it leans hard into a corrupted-system, “Gaming Legends” theme built around franchises like Sonic, Mega Man, Pac-Man, and Tetris. Ahead of launch, the shape of the update is already clear: a reworked map centered on a giant Spire, a fresh batch of Sprites, new weapons, collab-driven Mythics, and a cartridge system that buffs everyone in the match.
Quick answer: Override launches Thursday, August 20, 2026. Update v42.00 downtime starts at 2 AM ET that day and is expected to run 4 to 6 hours, after which you can download the patch and drop in.

Override start time and v42.00 downtime
Chapter 7 Season 3 wraps on August 19, 2026, and Override takes over on August 20. Before the new season is playable, servers go offline for maintenance. Downtime for update v42.00 begins at 2 AM ET on August 20 and typically lasts between four and six hours.
You’ll know the switch is done when matchmaking comes back online and the client prompts you to install v42.00. Let all shaders finish installing before you queue, or you may hit stutters on the first few drops.
Override Battle Pass and the Gaming Legends theme
The Battle Pass runs on a Gaming Legends theme, and two of its eight slots are already known by name: Sonic and Geno. The rest are a mix of original Fortnite characters and one gaming crossover skin, with official names still to be confirmed at launch. A new sidekick companion also joins the Override Pass.

Here’s the current lineup of the eight Battle Pass skins:
- Warrior with sword and shield
- Soldier skin
- Kart Racer Girl
- Original Fighter skin
- New original Chapter 7 Season 4 skin
- Tetris skin
- Sonic
- Geno
Most of the season’s biggest crossovers land in the Item Shop rather than the pass. A Persona 5 Joker skin has been confirmed by Epic, and Sonic’s Dr. Eggman and Shadow are expected to sell separately, alongside likely appearances from Mega Man, Crash Bandicoot, Pac-Man, and Kingdom Hearts characters. Note that not every referenced franchise is guaranteed a skin. Some show up only as locations or environmental details.
Map changes: the Spire, new POIs, and a pink biome
The island keeps most of its layout but gets a new centerpiece. A giant Spire has replaced the Zero Point at the middle of the map, and the fresh points of interest are arranged around it. It sits at the heart of the season’s story setup.

No biomes are being removed. Instead, a new biome has grown around the Spire, marked by trees with an unusual pink color. Here’s how the named locations break down:
| Removed | Added | Returning |
|---|---|---|
| Calamari Canyon | Geno’s HQ | Lifty Lodge |
| Frosted Flats | Sonic Green Hills Zone | Battlewoods |
| Sinister Strip | Temple | Latte Landing |
| Spire | Wonkeeland | |
| Pac-Man Island | Golden Grove | |
| Shaken Sanctuary | ||
| Cluster Coast | ||
| Sunken Shores | ||
| Heatwave Harbor | ||
| Chopped Shop |
Eight new Sprites and the Sprite Garden
Sprites are sticking around for Override, and the season adds eight new ones to collect. Two of them tie into Sonic’s world, and their effects are the clearest so far. The Tails Sprite lets you glide through the air, and the Sonic Sprite is expected to grant a speed boost.

The full Sprite lineup is:
- Bushranger
- Sonic
- Tails
- Jazz Jackrabbit
- Klombo
- Killswitch
- Crown
- One unrevealed Sprite
Extraction Gizmos and Sprite Chests carry over, since both have become core to how matches play out. After you log in, head to the Sprite Garden to reunite with your older Sprites and store the new ones you collect.
New weapons in the loot pool
Three new guns join the loot pool, all built around the Gaming Legends theme. The 8-bit Shotgun is a close-range option that may use interchangeable cartridges to swap between different buffs.

The other two lean into a Cyberpunk 2077 Edgerunners crossover and can be dual-wielded, as shown in the reveal footage.

| Weapon | Type | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 8-bit Shotgun | Shotgun | Close range, possible interchangeable cartridges for variable buffs |
| HJSH-18 Masamune | Assault Rifle | Likely Cyberpunk 2077 collab, dual-wieldable |
| TKI-20 Shingen | SMG | Likely Cyberpunk 2077 collab, dual-wieldable |
Collab Mythic items
At least three collab items arrive with the update on August 20, spread across Sonic, Tetris, and Mega Man. The Sonic Spin Dash Mythic is the one Epic is pushing hardest, and it lets you dash quickly, including up vertical surfaces.

The Tetriminos Junk Rift behaves like the standard Junk Rift but summons falling Tetris blocks. Sunken Shores is already scattered with Tetris pieces, which may mean a better chance of finding the item there, or it could simply be set dressing. The Mega Man Mythic looks like a hand cannon that can charge up for a stronger shot, though whether it uses ammo or a cooldown isn’t yet clear.
| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Sonic Spin Dash Mythic | Fast dash that can climb vertical surfaces |
| Tetriminos Junk Rift | Summons Tetris blocks like a Junk Rift |
| Mega Man Mythic | Hand cannon with a chargeable special attack |
The cartridge mechanic
The standout new system is cartridges. During a match, you can find a cartridge and slot it into a system to unlock a buff. The catch is that the effect isn’t yours alone. It applies to everyone on the island.

The cartridge can be swapped once per match, which again changes the buff for every player. Depending on the effect and your loadout, it can swing a fight in your favor, especially when paired with a strong Sprite.
Epic will publish the full v42.00 patch notes at launch with final skin names, balance changes, and anything still held back. Until servers go live on August 20, treat unrevealed effects and item behavior as subject to change.
