The Port-A-Cover is a throwable metal barricade in Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 3 that gives you instant cover when you get caught in the open. It shields you from incoming fire, works well for peeking, and buys you a few seconds when you need to heal, revive, or trigger an Extraction Gizmo.

Quick answer: Buy the Port-A-Cover for free at any Special-O-Matic Vending Machine on the island, then equip it as your Pocket Item and place it from the Utility Slot.

Where to get the Port-A-Cover in Fortnite

You cannot find the Port-A-Cover as ground loot or inside chests this season. It only comes from a Special-O-Matic Vending Machine, and these are spread all over the map, so reaching one is rarely a problem. The item costs nothing to take, so there is no V-Bucks card or gold to spend.

Interact with the machine and select the Port-A-Cover. Once purchased, it slots in as your active Pocket Item and can be used an unlimited number of times, with a short cooldown between placements.

How Pocket Items work

The Port-A-Cover is a Pocket Item, so it does not take up a regular inventory slot. That is a big advantage in Zero Build, where you want to keep your loadout free for weapons and healing. The trade-off is that you can only hold one Pocket Item at a time.

You start each match with the Pocket Shockwave Grenade by default. Buying the Port-A-Cover swaps that out for the barricade. The other options you can pick from are below.

Pocket ItemMain use
Pocket Shockwave GrenadeDefault option for quick repositioning
Pocket Crash Pad JR.Safe drops and vertical movement
Pocket Port-A-CoverInstant deployable cover
Pocket Spicy Ice CreamConsumable boost

Because only one can be active, choose the Port-A-Cover when you expect long-range fights or want reliable protection while healing. Swap back to a mobility option if you prefer to reposition instead.

How to place and use the Port-A-Cover

Select the Port-A-Cover from your Utility Slot. It does not sit in the Pickaxe Slot or your normal inventory slots, so look for it in the utility position.

Aim toward the ground and watch for the outline. Holding aim shows the projectile arc and a preview of exactly where the barricade will land, so use it as a guide before you commit.
Fire to throw it. The cover deploys instantly where the outline showed. Once placed it is immovable, so you cannot pick it back up or carry it with you.

Note: The Port-A-Cover will not destroy anything already standing in its footprint. If you drop it next to a tree or a wall, part of the barricade simply will not form. Plan around obstacles, or you will waste the placement and have to sit through the cooldown before trying again.

What the Port-A-Cover protects you from

When deployed, the barricade forms a small structure built from several pieces. The main front panel is the toughest, the two side panels are weaker, and a smaller interactable piece sits in the center. That center piece is a shutter you can open or close.

PieceHealth
Front panel800
Side panels (each)550
Interactable center piece400

Open the center shutter to peek and take quick shots, then close it to stay protected. If you are running the Striker Sprite, you can hurdle over the cover to gain a speed boost, which is handy for pushing after a peek.

The cover is not permanent. Enough sustained damage will break it apart, so treat it as temporary protection rather than a fixed wall. Reposition or replace it once a section starts to give way, and lean on the short cooldown to keep fresh cover coming during a longer fight.
