Fortnite: How to Get the Shadow the Hedgehog Skin for Free

The Shadow Cup on August 21 hands the skin, back bling, and emote to top-placing players in each region.

The Shadow Cup on August 21 hands the skin, back bling, and emote to top-placing players in each region.

Shadow the Hedgehog arrives in Fortnite alongside Chapter 7 Season 4 Override, and the first way to get him costs nothing but a good tournament run. Epic is putting the full cosmetic set behind the Shadow Cup, a one-day competitive event tied to the Gaming Legends season.

Quick answer: Enter the Shadow Cup from the Compete tab on August 21, 2026, and finish inside your region’s placement cutoff in Battle Royale, Zero Build, or the Mobile bracket to unlock the Shadow the Hedgehog outfit, Doom’s Eye Back Bling, and the Super Shadow Transformation emote.

Shadow Cup entry requirements and modes

The Shadow Cup is a solo event running on August 21, 2026. There is no team format, so every point on the leaderboard is yours alone. Start times differ by region, and each region runs its own leaderboard.

Three separate brackets are available, and you only need to do well in one of them. Battle Royale and Zero Build run on PC and console, while mobile players compete in their own bracket against other mobile players — no phone-versus-PC matchups.

Open Fortnite and go to the Compete tab in the lobby. The Shadow Cup tiles appear there with the schedule, rules, and point breakdown for your region.
Pick the bracket you want. You can also review the event pages on the official Fortnite competitive site if you want to check the rules before you queue.
Check your region’s start window before match day. The cup runs at different local hours depending on where your account is registered, and missing the window means missing the cup entirely.

Placement cutoffs by region

How hard this is depends almost entirely on where you play. Europe and NA Central hand out the most spots by a wide margin, while smaller regions squeeze the free skin into double digits. The mobile bracket has a much smaller prize pool across the board.

RegionBR / Zero BuildMobile
EuropeTop 1,000Top 200
NA CentralTop 700Top 150
North America WestTop 200Top 30
BrazilTop 200Top 30
OceaniaTop 100Top 30
AsiaTop 100Top 30
Middle EastTop 100Top 30

Note: your account region decides which leaderboard you land on. If you play in Europe or NA Central, a solid but not elite run is genuinely enough to clear the cutoff.

What the Shadow Cup unlocks

Clearing the placement cutoff gets you the whole headline set. Below that, there are two sprays gated behind point totals rather than placement, which is the consolation prize for anyone who shows up and plays a few matches.

Doom’s Eye Back BlingPlacement cutoff
Super Shadow Transformation emotePlacement cutoff
Shadow’s Power spray8 points (5 on mobile)
Sonic’s Roll spray40 points (20 on mobile)

The spray thresholds are low enough that casual players can pick them up without contending for the leaderboard. A handful of decent placements and eliminations across your session will get you there.

Why players miss the free skin

Most failed attempts come down to a few predictable things rather than raw skill. Playing in a small region such as Oceania, Asia, or the Middle East means competing for as few as 100 spots, and the mobile bracket is tighter still at 30 in most of those regions.

The other common miss is timing. The cup is a single-day event with a fixed window per region, so late registration or logging in after your region’s session has ended leaves you with nothing to play. Confirm your final standing on the event leaderboard in the Compete tab, and check the Locker once Epic finalizes results to see the Shadow cosmetics in your collection.

Item Shop prices if you miss the cutoff

Missing the placement isn’t the end of it. The Shadow cosmetics are expected to hit the Fortnite Item Shop on August 23, 2026, where you can buy them outright with V-Bucks. Epic hasn’t confirmed the shop date officially, so treat the timing as provisional.

ItemExpected cost
Shadow the Hedgehog Bundle2,500 V-Bucks
Shadow the Hedgehog outfit1,800 V-Bucks
Doom’s Eye Back Bling500 V-Bucks
Super Shadow Transformation emote300 V-Bucks
Shadow’s Power spray200 V-Bucks
Sonic’s Roll spray200 V-Bucks

Bundling everything at 2,500 V-Bucks works out cheaper than buying the pieces one at a time. Collaboration cosmetics like this rotate out of the shop after a short run, so the buying window is narrow.

If you’re on the fence, the free route is worth attempting first — entering costs nothing, the sprays are easy to secure, and the shop option is still there two days later if the leaderboard doesn’t go your way.
