Fortnite Override: How the 8-Bit Shotgun Works

The 8-Bit Shotgun is the headline weapon of Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4: Override, and it does something no other shotgun in the game does. It keeps score. Every hit you land feeds a running combo counter built into the gun itself, and that counter ties into both a global leaderboard and one of the season’s most useful items.

Quick answer: Pick up an 8-Bit Shotgun from the floor or a chest in Battle Royale or Zero Build, then land consecutive hits on enemies or bosses without missing. Each connected shot raises your multiplier, and pushing your score high enough awards a 1-Up Token, which respawns you with your full loadout after an elimination.

Where to find the 8-Bit Shotgun in Fortnite

The weapon sits in the normal loot pool for both Battle Royale and Zero Build, so it drops as floor loot and appears inside chests. There is no unlock requirement and no quest gating it. If you land at a busy point of interest and open two or three chests, you will usually find one.

There is also a shortcut. The 8-Bit Sprite guarantees an 8-Bit Shotgun in your first chest of the match and gives you a core multiplier for it, which is worth equipping if you plan to chase a score.

8-Bit Shotgun stats by rarity

It comes in every rarity tier, all the way up to Mythic. Functionally it behaves like a Tactical Shotgun with automatic fire, a quick rate of fire, and a reasonable damage spread, so it rewards staying on target rather than landing one perfect pump.

Mythic1171504.2s

Note the Mythic reload. It hits hardest at 117 damage per shot, but it takes 4.2 seconds to reload, which is nearly twice as long as the Legendary. In a drawn-out box fight, the Legendary version can actually keep more pressure on.

Cosmetically, the gun reloads with game cartridges instead of shells and throws pixel effects on hit, with a live scoreboard readout attached to the weapon.

How the combo multiplier and score system work

Damaging an enemy with the 8-Bit Shotgun adds to a high score that tracks in real time. The score is not just a flat total of damage dealt. Chaining consecutive shots that connect raises a multiplier, and a higher multiplier means each subsequent hit is worth far more.

The catch is unforgiving. Miss a single shot and the multiplier drops straight back to zero. That changes how you should fight with it. Firing wildly at a moving target from mid range will keep resetting your chain, so the score rewards patient, close-quarters bursts where every shot is likely to land.

Tip: Bosses are large, slow targets that absorb a lot of shots, which makes them the easiest way to stack a long uninterrupted chain.

How to earn a 1-Up Token with the 8-Bit Shotgun

This is the real payoff. Build your score high enough by shooting enemies and bosses and the game hands you a 1-Up Token. The token functions as an extra life. When you are eliminated, you respawn with your complete inventory intact rather than dropping out of the match.

Crucially, it works in Solos. You do not need a teammate to revive you, which makes the token one of the strongest safety nets in the season for solo players pushing for a Victory Royale.

You will know it worked when the 1-Up Token appears in your inventory. The confirmation after that is unmistakable, since you come back into the match instead of hitting the elimination screen.

How to get the Mythic 8-Bit Shotgun from Eggman

The Mythic version is a guaranteed boss drop rather than a lucky chest roll. Dr. Eggman patrols the island in his Egg Mobile hovercraft, and eliminating him drops the Mythic 8-Bit Shotgun. He can spawn at least twice in a single match, so missing him once is not the end of it.

Two of his spawn points are Green Hill Zone and the area near Stone Sanctum. Alongside the shotgun, he sometimes drops the Mythic Sonic Power Sneakers, which let you charge a grounded Spin Dash or launch into an airborne Spin Attack.

He is not a pushover. Expect him to hover out of reach and shrug off chip damage, so bring enough ammo and a plan for cover before you engage.

What the 8-Bit Leaderboard actually rewards

Open the Override tab in the lobby and you will find the 8-Bit Leaderboard, which ranks scores against your friends and against players globally. The scores you build during Battle Royale matches feed directly into it.

Set your expectations accordingly. Climbing the leaderboard does not unlock cosmetics, XP, or any other in-game item. It exists purely as a bragging-rights competition, so there is nothing to miss out on if you never crack the top ranks.

Treated as a normal weapon, the 8-Bit Shotgun is a competent automatic shotgun with solid close-range numbers across every rarity. Treated as a scoring tool, it is the most reliable route to an extra life in a season where a single mistake used to end your run. Land your shots in sequence and it pays you back twice.
