Fortnite Ranked sorts players into eight named tiers and moves you up or down based mostly on how long you survive, not how many kills you rack up. Each new season wipes your visible rank but keeps your underlying skill rating, so you settle back into a fair spot quickly and start chasing the same reward: the Axe of Unreal.
Quick answer: Reach Unreal for the first time in a season to unlock the Axe of Unreal, and hit Champion or Unreal to become eligible for Division 1 Cups. Placement counts more than eliminations, so play for the endgame.

Every Fortnite rank and division in order
The ladder runs through eight tiers from Bronze up to Unreal. Most tiers are split into three divisions numbered I through III, with I being the top of that tier. As of the v40.20 update, Elite and Champion each gained three divisions of their own, which brings the full climb to 22 individual steps before Unreal caps everything off.
| Rank | Divisions |
|---|---|
| Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond | Three each (I–III) |
| Elite, Champion | Three each (I–III), added in v40.20 |
| Unreal | Single top tier, no divisions |
Your progress toward the next division is shown as a bar for every rank up to Champion. Fill it to move up, drain it to zero after a bad run, and you drop back down. Placement carries more weight than eliminations, and kills late in a match count more than early ones. The rank of the players you eliminate also matters, so taking out a Champion in the final circle is worth far more than an early Bronze knock.

There is no hidden level requirement. New accounts just need to clear one warm-up quest before the Ranked toggle becomes available.
You know it worked when your rank emblem appears on the right side of the lobby screen with Ranked set to on. Turning Ranked on also changes matchmaking so you only face other players who have it enabled, using the same loot pool as tournaments.

Which modes share a rank and which don’t
Battle Royale and Zero Build used to run on separate ladders. Since the Rivalry Rises season they share one combined rank and one progress bar, so climbing in either mode moves the same number. Reload is the exception and keeps its own ladder that never touches your Battle Royale or Zero Build rank.
| Mode | Rank tracking |
|---|---|
| Battle Royale + Zero Build | Combined, shared progress |
| Reload | Separate ladder |
Note: In Duos and Squads, your team matchmakes at a “party rank” equal to your highest-ranked teammate, but everyone still keeps their own individual rank and gains or loses progress based on the team’s placement and eliminations.

Reaching Unreal and staying there
Unreal sits at the very top of the standard ladder. Once you hit it, you cannot be demoted for the rest of that season no matter how your later matches go. Below Unreal, dropping your progress bar to zero still knocks you back a division.
Reaching Unreal doesn’t end the grind. Instead of a progress bar, you get a global number showing your standing among all Unreal players, tracked on the Unreal leaderboard. Keep performing well to push that number higher.
Unreal Legends: the prestige tier above Unreal
Unreal Legends arrived in Chapter 7 Season 3 as a status that sits above standard Unreal. It is intentionally hard, because three separate conditions must all be true at the same time. Fail any single one and the status is stripped immediately.
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Unreal rank | Must be held in standard Battle Royale. Zero Build and Reload do not count. |
| Skill rating | 2,500 or higher, drawn from your 20 best tournament results plus your current rank. |
| Leaderboard place | Inside the Top 500 on the Unreal Leaderboard, the toughest of the three gates. |
Tougher tournaments move your skill rating far more than easy ones. A single strong FNCS run does more for your rating than hours of grinding basic Ranked Cups.

Ranked rewards you can earn
Rewards scale with how far you climb. The headline prize is the Axe of Unreal, unlocked the first time you reach Unreal in a season. It gains a new tier each season you hit Unreal again, and Battle Royale and Reload each track their own separate Axe of Unreal progress.
| Milestone | Reward |
|---|---|
| First Unreal of the season | Axe of Unreal cosmetic, with a new tier each season you re-hit Unreal |
| Champion or Unreal | Eligibility for Division 1 Cups, the entry point into the FNCS pathway |
You also earn cosmetics during regular play. Every Ranked match hands you a Ranked Urgent Quest when you jump off the Battle Bus. Completing these unlocks seasonal cosmetics, some of which change color or style based on the rank you reached that season. A fresh quest is given each match, and its progress does not carry over between matches.

How the season reset works now
A rank reset happens at the start of every new season. The difference today is that your visible rank resets while your underlying skill rating carries over. That means your placement match sorts you back into a fair spot quickly instead of forcing a full climb from Bronze every single time.
So the smart approach at the start of a season is simple. Play your one placement match in Battle Royale and one in Zero Build to reveal where you land, then grind toward Unreal to secure the Axe of Unreal and, if you push far enough, the tournament eligibility that comes with Champion and above.
