The Gambler’s Secret Wandering Tale in Where Winds Meet turns a simple night at the tavern into a citywide treasure chase through Kaifeng. What looks like a quick side activity in the Incomparable Tavern unfolds into a chain of dice games, clue maps, and a final reveal that the “treasure” is an elaborate prank.
It is also easy to break your flow: the quest can briefly show up as an Exploration quest, some steps are poorly explained, and the dice cheating mechanic confuses many players. The walkthrough below follows the actual sequence of events in Kaifeng and highlights the key mechanics that the game quietly expects you to figure out.
How to start Gambler’s Secret in Kaifeng
Where it is: Kaifeng City, South Gate Avenue, at the circular building marked as the Incomparable Tavern, just north of the Main South Gate Boundary Stone.
Quest type: Begins as an Exploration quest and later registers as a Wandering Tale once completed.
Trigger conditions inside the tavern:
- A crowd of NPCs is gathered at a table in the Incomparable Tavern.
- Eavesdropping on their conversation starts the hunt for the Gambling King’s “secret treasure.”
From there, Gambler’s Secret initially plays like a small, self-contained exploration of the tavern’s Imperial Suite, then quietly branches into the larger Wandering Tale with dice games and clue maps out in the city.

Add to Google Preferences →Imperial Suite: the first “Gambler’s Secret” objective
Before the Wandering Tale layer even appears, you first clear a short Exploration quest inside the tavern. This is how that part works.

At this point, it can look like the entire thing is done; the UI even checks the quest off. In reality, this unlocks the broader Wandering Tale that players often refer to when they talk about Gambler’s Secret, complete with dice games and clue maps.
Wandering Tale: how the extended Gambler’s Secret actually works
Once the Imperial Suite exploration is done, the next phase begins out on the street with Treasure Hunters and a master gambler. This is where you start seeing the “clue maps” that point you to different locations in Kaifeng.
Dice cheating basics: Wind Sense and Celestial Seize
Almost every major step in the Wandering Tale uses the same dice minigame with a twist: you can cheat.
- Wind Sense: lets you see the values of the dice under the cup and provides a UI overlay so you can plan your manipulation.
- Celestial Seize: lets you physically “slide” the dice around under the cup to change the final total before you reveal them.
The game does not explain the key input detail well, which is why many players think the minigame is bugged:
Crucial input tip: when cheating, you must hold the movement direction (W/A/S/D on keyboard or the equivalent stick direction on a controller) to shift the dice. Tapping a direction does nothing, so it looks like the dice are locked.
During the minigame, activate Wind Sense to inspect total values and then use Celestial Seize while holding a direction to push the dice until you reach the total the opponent demands (18, 10, more than 20, etc.). Only then should you lift the cup.

Treasure Hunters at South Gate Avenue

First dice duel with Gai Zhongyan (Clue Map: Cuju)
Gai Zhongyan is introduced as the Master Gambler and becomes the central figure behind the prank.

Qiyun Society at Cuju Fields (second dice game)
The Cuju fields sit in the southern part of Kaifeng City, in the South Gate Avenue area. Qiyun Society is located by this field and hosts the next dice opponent.

Jiang’s Teahouse and the Khitan warriors (third dice game)
The Tea Cup clue sends you to Jiang’s Teahouse, another location associated with South Gate Avenue’s food and leisure district.

Immortal Tree in Vigilance Garden (Withered Tree clue)
The Withered Tree clue describes an “Immortal Tree” in Vigilance Garden, another Kaifeng location dominated by greenery and a distinctive tall tree.

Stealing the Withered Tree Coin Pouch with Celestial Seize
This step trips up a lot of players because the interaction area is picky.
- A Paper Slip that spells out the punchline of the prank.
- A Bronze Key that fits a hidden lock back near the Incomparable Tavern.

Using the Bronze Key back at South Gate Avenue
The final step resolves everything where it began: the South Gate Avenue market near the tavern.

Common issues and small quest bugs
Gambler’s Secret has a few rough edges that are worth keeping in mind as you work through it.
- Quest category flicker: It can show as an Exploration quest at first and only later appear under Wandering Tales. The reward tracking at the end uses the Wandering Tales list, so check that tab for completion.
- Missing NPCs: Some players report that the Treasure Hunters or gamblers near the tavern fail to spawn or become non-interactable. Progressing other Kaifeng content (for example, parts of the “One Leaf, One Life” chain) and returning later often makes them reappear.
- Art workshop / Qiyun Society confusion: The first outdoor clue mentions Qi’s art workshop or Qiyun Society, which many misread. The relevant location is by the Cuju field in southwest South Gate Avenue, near Song’s Bathhouse.
- Khitan warriors not obvious: After obtaining the second map, the log can mention Khitan warriors without clearly pointing to Jiang’s Teahouse. The three warriors you need are in the left-hand room next to the wounded Xia Zhi.
- Celestial Seize on the tree: If Gui Zhongyan’s pouch on the Immortal Tree cannot be stolen from ground level, reposition yourself on a nearby roof or branch and attempt Celestial Seize again from behind him.
Once the last dialogue with Gai Zhongyan ends and the incense burner has been opened with the Bronze Key, Gambler’s Secret is fully resolved. The prank is over, and the Harmless Prank lantern and The Cunning Outsider title confirm that you made it through every misleading clue and dice table in Kaifeng.
