Flyboys trades Gears of War E-Day’s usual cover combat for a flight through Kalona on a King Raven. You spend almost the entire chapter behind a mounted minigun, protecting the aircraft and supporting other units below while the pilot moves between objectives. There is no ground movement and no manual weapon swapping, so success comes down to target priority and managing the gun’s heat.

Quick answer: Mount the side minigun when the crew calls you forward, keep fire on whatever is actively hitting the Raven, survive two defense waves, and the chapter ends automatically once you land at the airfield and meet Commander Zee.

How the mounted minigun works

Once you take control, the gun is your only weapon for the chapter. Two things decide how well you do with it.

  • Monitor the heat gauge in the upper-right corner, firing in measured bursts to keep the gun from entering cooldown while enemies approach.
  • Shoot fuel tankers along the route. A single hit detonates them and wipes out clusters of creatures nearby, saving both ammo and heat.
  • Prioritize whatever is firing on the Raven right now. There are always more visible targets than you need to kill, so chase the active threats instead of sweeping the whole screen.

Flyboys walkthrough, takeoff to airfield

The chapter opens at the Oria Stadium FOB, where Daan introduces Bravo squad and the crew boards the waiting King Raven. Marcus, Carter, Santiago, and Reyes take their seats, pilot Gill lifts off, and the Ravens form up and leave the stadium. This whole opening plays out as a cutscene over the ruined city, so there is nothing to do yet.

An explosion hits near the transport and Gill orders the squad onto the weapons. You mount the side minigun under the objective “Protect your Raven.” Fire down on the enemies launching ink from the elevated transit bridge, since those are the shots landing on your aircraft.
The objective changes to “Target the Seeders.” Turn the gun on the large Seeder creatures in the streets below, along with the ground units around them. This is a good spot to line up a fuel tanker to catch several enemies at once.
The Raven reaches a rooftop where KR-92 is extracting wounded, and the objective becomes “Support the Gears on the rooftop.” A large horde pushes the pinned-down soldiers, so fire into the surrounding windows and the heaviest threats first to keep the landing zone clear.

Flying creatures join the fight after a nearby Raven is dragged down. Enemies now come from the rooftops and from the sky on both sides as you pass between buildings, so keep checking above you. They keep spawning until you hit the next checkpoint, no matter which direction they attack from.
Aerial combat continues over the flooded streets and the bay against squid-like flyers, with Gill breaking into evasive maneuvers as waves flank the convoy. Hold your fire on whichever flyers are swarming the aircraft. The Raven then passes Fort Vigil and the naval port near the CNV Safehold, where more flyers swarm in and need suppressing.
After the first marker there is a short pause before a second wave arrives. You defend the Raven again using the same controls as before. Clear this wave and the aircraft begins its landing approach to the airfield.

During the evasive maneuvers the camera swings hard, so stop firing for a beat and reacquire your target once the Raven levels out rather than burning through the heat gauge blindly.

How Flyboys ends and leads into Overrun

Flyboys ends when you lose control and a cutscene starts at the airfield. The squad meets Zee, the base commander, and the chapter concludes. Soon after, creatures emerge from beneath the ground and overrun the airfield, leading straight into Chapter 5, Overrun. There is no final boss or score screen to clear before moving on; reaching the airfield and surviving the landing is enough.
