Down in the Dumps is the third leg of the In the Dwelling of Life world quest chain in Genshin Impact 7.0, and it drops you into a flooded sewer with no way up until you solve its keycard puzzle. It begins the moment you finish Transplanted From Yesterday to Tomorrow, and it plays out entirely inside the Shadow Realm, so your usual team and abilities are locked away.
Quick answer: Read the Sewer Entrance/Exit Guide in the control room, then move the Blue, White, and Red Key Cards between consoles to drain the water and reach each key. Slot all three into the control room door, fight the Leshy holding the Sewer Lift Control Wheel, and use that wheel to open the gate to the elevator.
Shadow Realm rules before you start
The entire quest takes place in the Shadow Realm. You cannot swap characters or use Elemental Skills, Bursts, or normal mobility. You are limited to the Traveler’s TPS-mode guns and the crafting mechanics tied to the Eye of Graeae, such as the Grappling Gun and Prime Ice Constructs. Keep this in mind for every obstacle below, since most solutions rely on those tools rather than combat power.
Walk deeper into the sewer and unlock the Teleport Waypoint. When you hit the first stuck gate, double-press the sprint button to slide through the gap beneath it.
Place the Metal Control Wheel on the Rotary Mechanism and rotate it to open the next gate. This gate jams partway, so slide underneath it to keep moving.
In the water-filled room, step onto the wooden plank Paimon points out, then build a Grappling Gun in the middle of the water so it drags the plank toward the far side. Shoot any wooden boxes blocking the path, and remove and rebuild the Grappling Gun as needed to reach the ledge.
If a jump comes up short on the far side, build a Cube or a Floating Platform Prime Ice Construct to gain the extra height you need.
Once you arrive in the control room, read the Sewer Entrance/Exit Guide left by Doctor Moreau on the corner table. It marks the locations of the three keys you need to open the gate ahead.
How the three keycards work
The whole puzzle runs on one rule. Taking a key that drained water lets the water rise again, and a gate held open by a key snaps shut once you remove it. To beat that, you jam gates open with a Cube or by sliding through as they stick, and you move fast whenever the water is dropping. The Eye of Graeae (Goggles) marks each key’s location as you unlock access to it.

On a raised platform past a slide-under gate, guarded by a Leshy, once the water is fully drained.
Insert the Blue Key into the console to the northwest to open the next gate. Before you pass through, build a Cube beneath that gate, then take the Blue Key back. The gate gets stuck instead of closing fully, so you can slide through with the key still in hand.
On the other side, insert the Blue Key into the console on the right to drain half the water. The Eye of Graeae now marks the White Key on your screen.
Remove the Blue Key, drop down to the console below, and insert it there before the water rises again. This opens the door to the White Key. If you cannot reach the ledge you need after the door opens, wait for the water to rise and float up to it.
Take the White Key from the console inside the room, grab the Exquisite Chest, then build a Grappling Gun at the grapple point to break open a route out. You come out near the start, so follow the path back and use the ledges on the right to reach the console by the water.
Insert the White Key into the left console. Let Paimon retrieve the Blue Key from the lower device and reinsert it into the right console. With both keys in place, the water drains completely.
Head down and follow the drained path until you reach a gate you can slide under. The Red Key sits on the platform above, marked by the Eye of Graeae. Aim at the blue sigil to pull yourself up to it.
Taking the Red Key triggers a fight with the Leshy. Defeat it, grab the Precious Chest nearby, then use the Rotary Mechanism to open the gate and climb back up. Return to the main control console and take the White and Blue Keys once more so you have all three.
Inside, the Rotary Mechanism by the gate is missing its wheel. The Sewer Lift Control Wheel is stuck on a Leshy’s head inside a capsule, and you cannot climb up to it. Shoot the glass container to free the creature, then fight it.
This Leshy, Klenova the Ascended, is more aggressive than the earlier ones. Defeating it drops the Sewer Lift Control Wheel where it falls. Pick the wheel up from that spot.
Fit the wheel onto the Rotary Mechanism and open the gate to the lift. Grab the Luxurious Chest, ride the elevator to the top, and follow the stairs ahead to return to the surface.
Note: If you cleared the final enemy but did not receive the wheel, check the ground where Klenova fell rather than the capsule, since the wheel drops with the body.
Rewards and what comes next
You know the quest is done when you climb out onto the surface and the objective updates. Completing Down in the Dumps immediately starts the Back on One’s Feet mission, the next stage of the In the Dwelling of Life chain.
