God of War Laufey on PS5 - Story, Cast, and Combat Explained

God of War Laufey is the next mainline entry in the God of War series, built by Santa Monica Studio for the PlayStation 5. For the first time, the player no longer controls Kratos. Instead, you step into the role of Faye, his late wife, as she wakes up after her own funeral in a strange afterlife called the Everywhen.

Quick answer: God of War Laufey has no release date or release window. It is a PS5 exclusive, and you can add it to your wishlist now on the PlayStation Store; pre-orders are not yet open.

God of War Laufey release date and platforms

Santa Monica Studio revealed the game during a State of Play showcase, closing the broadcast with an extended gameplay reveal. No launch date and no release window were given at the event.

The game is confirmed as a PS5 console exclusive. Wishlisting is live, but there are no pre-orders, no editions, and no pricing yet. While Santa Monica has not shared a window, the project is still in active development, so a wait is expected.

The story: Faye and the Everywhen

The 2018 God of War opens with Faye already dead, her funeral setting Kratos and Atreus on their journey. Laufey rewinds to that moment and asks what happened to her next. Rather than ending, Faye awakens in the Everywhen, a realm she has never known.

The Everywhen is described as the birthplace and endpoint of all magic, a realm that sits above the afterlives meant for mortals. It is where gods and creatures from different mythologies end up after death, and they do not get along. This is the answer to the question that obsessed Odin before Ragnarök: what happens to the gods when they die.

Faye soon learns that the plans she made to protect Kratos and Atreus are now in danger. To save them, she has to fight her way through the Everywhen while its natural flow of magic is disrupted, which makes leaving far harder than expected. Two early enemies have already been shown, the gods Sekhmet and Begtse, neither of whom welcomes her arrival.

Gameplay: combat, sword, and soul magic

The reveal came with more than 20 minutes of gameplay. Laufey keeps the modern series structure, a third-person, over-the-shoulder action-adventure with exploration of a large, connected world and a story-driven core. Santa Monica says it wanted Faye's game to carry all the elements that define a God of War title.

The biggest change is how Faye fights. Her combat blends the fluid movement of the older Greek-era games with the world-building and character focus of the Norse era. She moves freely between the ground and the air without stopping the action, giving her more offensive and defensive options and a faster, more agile rhythm than Kratos.

Faye's main weapon is a legendary sword. Since Kratos keeps the Leviathan Axe, Faye earns the trust of the sword's guardian, Rue, and is allowed to wield the blade. Her style is built around speed, control, and keeping momentum from one hit to the next, on the ground or in the air.

Her second tool is the Golden Hand of the Jötnar. As the most powerful protector of the Giants, Faye could already manipulate souls, a power feared even by Odin. In the Everywhen, that ability is amplified. She can strike with her golden palm to tear a soul out of an enemy's body, then attack that soul directly, knock it into other enemies, and chain it into combos.

Cast and companions in God of War Laufey

Deborah Ann Woll, who voiced Faye in God of War Ragnarök, returns to lead the cast. Faye does not travel alone; she meets two companions shortly after waking in the Everywhen.

How to wishlist and stay updated

Step 1: Open the God of War Laufey page on the PlayStation Store. The concept listing is live and clearly labeled as coming to PlayStation 5.

Step 2: Sign in with your PlayStation Network account and select the wishlist option. You will see the game appear in your wishlist once it is added, which confirms it worked.

There is no pre-order button to look for yet, so wishlisting is the only action currently available. If you do not see a wishlist option, make sure you are signed in to the correct region's store, since the concept page is region-based.

For now, the picture is clear even without a date. Faye is the protagonist, the Everywhen is the setting, the sword and soul-stripping Golden Hand drive her faster combat, and Deborah Ann Woll, Jack Quaid, and Perlina Lau lead the cast. Santa Monica has said it will share more about the afterlife of the gods as the game gets closer to release.
