Mercenaries are the front-line fighters of the New Camp in Gothic 1 Remake, and getting into their ranks runs through Lee, their leader. Joining the Mercenaries is a Chapter 3 side quest with three short objectives, but it only opens once you have already pledged to the New Camp as a bandit and pushed past Chapter 2. The actual work is a single favor for a water mage named Myxir out at a wrecked ship on the beach.

Quick answer: Talk to Lee near the mage’s quarters, find Myxir on the trail below the lighthouse, kill the six Fire Lizards around the shipwreck, then dive to the submerged mast and loot The old Ways of the Druids from the underwater chest. Hand the book to Myxir for +300 XP, then return to Lee, who promotes you and gives you Mercenary armor.

Requirements before Joining the Mercenaries

This quest sits behind a few earlier steps, so you cannot reach Lee until they are done. The path runs through the New Camp bandit route and the Swamp Camp trip in Chapter 2.

During The Brotherhood’s Plan you witness the Swamp Camp splinter into two groups. After that trip, head back toward the New Camp to begin.


Meet Lee at the New Camp

When you return from the Swamp Camp, Jarvis stops you near the New Camp entrance and tells you Lee has been asking for you. Before chasing Lee, go back to Lares and wrap up the Brotherhood’s Plan quest so your bandit business is settled.
Learn the improved diving skill from Homer in the New Camp. You will be searching underwater later, and better diving lets you stay down long enough to reach the chest without surfacing.

Walk to the rooms at the back of the camp, near the mage’s quarters, and speak with Lee. He agrees to bring you into the Mercenaries only if you help the water mage Myxir with an investigation.

Find Myxir near the lighthouse

Follow the river to the far east section of the map until you reach the lighthouse. The route branches to the right and leads down toward the beach.

Take the right-side path down. Myxir is standing roughly halfway down the trail toward the shore. Speak with him, then continue down to the shipwreck on the beach together.

Clear the Fire Lizards at the shipwreck

Six Fire Lizards patrol the area around the wreck, and their fire-breath attack can drain your health almost instantly. Treat this as a ranged fight, not a melee brawl.

Keep your distance so you stay out of the fire-breath range. Let Myxir freeze the lizards with his magic.
While the lizards are frozen, switch to your bow and fire at them. Picking them off one at a time from range avoids the worst of their damage.
Unlock the cabin door on the wreckage and grab the loot inside. The Armor Amulet is the standout reward here.

Find the source of the magic underwater

With the beach cleared, Myxir asks you to dive into the sea and locate the source of the magic. The item could take any form, but the one you need is inside a locked chest tucked into the wreck below the surface.

Swim out toward the submerged mast of the ship. This is your landmark for the dive.
Dive down toward the upper deck area near the mast to find the locked chest. The improved diving skill from Homer makes this far easier.

Open the chest and take its contents. The book called The old Ways of the Druids is the magical source Myxir is after.

Return the book and report to Lee

Swim back to shore and give The old Ways of the Druids to Myxir, who is waiting near the water’s edge. This rewards +300 Experience Points.
Head back to Lee at the New Camp and tell him the job is done. You earn another +700 Experience Points, and Lee formally makes you a Mercenary while handing over a new set of armor.

You will know it worked when Lee inducts you and the quest closes out, with the Rank Up: Mercenary (Renewal) quest becoming available next. To upgrade the armor you just received, visit Torlof, who usually stands just below Gorn in the New Camp. With that, you are a full Mercenary and free to keep building toward the Water Mages’ spell training further into the game.
