In Graveyard Keeper 2, a misplaced burial can be undone: any occupied grave can be emptied. You need one specific item that you buy; no ability, tool enhancement, or quest completion unlocks the action. Select Exhume Body while interacting with a grave that contains a corpse, and a window will show what you need before digging can begin.
Quick answer: Buy an Exhumation Certificate from Januarius at the village tavern, return to the grave, remove any crosses and fences, then select Exhume Body. You need one certificate for every corpse you dig up.
Why the Exhume Body option is blocked
Clicking an occupied plot in the Graveyard reveals the Exhume Body option. Select it to see a notice that lists an Exhumation Certificate as required, with the count at 0/1. That missing item is the only obstacle. Once you have a certificate in your inventory, the option works normally.

One certificate covers one grave. It is consumed the moment the exhumation runs, so budget a fresh copy for each body you intend to remove.

Run the exhumation at the grave
Success is clear from three changes: your inventory has one fewer certificate, the grave is empty, and you can refill or rebuild the plot. With the corpse back above ground, you can put it on the autopsy table again and remove Blood, Fat, Bones, or any other materials you overlooked before.
When exhuming is worth the cost
Exhuming lets you remove buried corpses with unwanted red skulls. Each red skull lowers the score of its grave, while the graveyard’s combined score affects your weekly Wrath-day sermon income, the Faith you earn, and the Bishop’s approval in town.
A grave’s score is the lower of Decor Score and Corpse White Skulls, less Red Skulls. The corpse’s white-skull count limits the decor score, so even a marble fence worth +2 adds only +2 to a body with two white skulls. This gives you another reason to exhume a body. After unlocking advanced embalming, replace it with a corpse that has more skulls to improve the plot without altering its decorations.
- Consider removing a corpse if its red skulls leave a decorated grave with a negative score.
- Exhume the corpse if you have a replacement with more white skulls ready for that plot.
- If a plot has a positive score already, let the corpse remain; another dig requires another certificate.
What to do with the exhumed body
Once removed from the ground, the corpse functions like any other body on your property. Choose where it will go before you begin digging.
| Destination | Best for |
|---|---|
| Rebury in a better plot | Bodies with a high white skull count |
| Cremation | Bodies that only ever cost you rating |
| Zombie resurrection | Corrupted bodies destined for labor or combat |
| River dumping | Fast removal when no pyre is unlocked |
Cremation is the most rewarding disposal route because it still hands you a Burial Certificate to sell to Januarius, plus Ash and sometimes Salt. It needs the Body Places I technology and a Crematorium I built inside the Morgue from 6 Bricks and 6 Bronze Details. River disposal is instant and free but returns nothing at all.
A corpse with red skulls can still be useful after exhumation. Corruption benefits zombie workers and soldiers: a reanimated assistant’s red-skull count determines how many perks it can unlock. Reserve presentable corpses for display graves, and send corrupted ones to the resurrection line so you won’t need to buy another certificate later.
