Grim Dawn Fangs of Asterkarn: Every Ascension Altar Offering Effect

A full breakdown of which crafting materials change your loot, and how much tougher each one makes enemies.

A full breakdown of which crafting materials change your loot, and how much tougher each one makes enemies.

The Ascension Altar in Grim Dawn – Fangs of Asterkarn trades rare crafting materials for a temporary boost to your loot, in exchange for stronger enemies during the current play session. You feed it materials, pick what kind of drops or encounters you want, and accept a scaling difficulty penalty that grows with every piece you offer.

Quick answer: Offer center-circle materials to bias drops toward a specific damage type, and outer-circle materials to raise your odds of rare drops, special containers, and Ascendant encounters. You can place one center material and up to five outer materials at once, and every material makes monsters harder for that session only.

Where the Ascension Altar is and what unlocks it

The altar sits in Kurnhold, a large Kurn settlement you reach naturally while following the expansion’s main story. You cannot use it right away. It becomes active once your character hits level 50 and you have advanced far enough into the Kurn questline to earn the tribe’s trust.

Standing near the altar is Jornn the Runekeeper, a separate NPC who Ascends your legendary items for permanent bonuses in return for materials and Iron Bits. That service is not the same as the altar itself. The altar only changes loot for the session, while Jornn permanently upgrades a single item.

How offerings work: center circle vs. outer circles

The altar has two distinct areas. The center circle focuses your drops on a specific item property, such as a damage type or pet gear. The outer circles improve your odds in other ways, such as more rare drops, better containers, or added Ascendant encounters.

Every material has a fixed purpose and only fits its intended spot. You can offer as few as one material or as many as six in total, counting the center. The outer circles accept up to five pieces in any mix, including five copies of the same material, while the center accepts a single material of one type.

The enemy penalty is cumulative. Each material adds its own monster boosts on top of the others, so stacking several effects at once can make encounters far tougher. Only load the altar with mechanics your character can actually clear.

How to confirm it worked: After placing your materials, press the “Offer” button rather than closing the altar screen. The altar responds with a rune symbol, which confirms the offering is active and that your loot is now altered for the session.

Note: The effects last only until you return to the main menu, and the materials are consumed permanently. They stay active across every region, so you can roam the base game, Ashes of Malmouth, Forgotten Gods, or Fangs of Asterkarn areas after making the offer. Only use the altar if you plan to keep playing that character without switching away.

Center circle materials (damage-type loot bias)

Center materials push the prefixes and suffixes on dropped gear toward a single damage type. Every center material gives enemies +30% to all damage and +100% health per piece, plus an extra damage boost of the matching type. Because you can only place one center material, this area is poorly suited to hybrid builds that need two damage types at once.

Manticore EyePet itemsNone (only +30% all damage, +100% HP)

The bias is strong. When farming with a center material like Ancient Heart, the large majority of rare drops tend to carry affixes matching the chosen type. Manticore Eye is the exception that targets pet gear rather than a damage type, and Ancient Heart adds only +12% Physical to enemies instead of the usual +30%.

Outer circle materials (drops, containers, and encounters)

Outer materials cover experience, reputation, container upgrades, and the special Ascendant encounters. Several of these stack per piece, up to a listed cap, so adding duplicates raises the chance further until it reaches the maximum.

The reputation boost from Aether Shard is one of the most immediately useful effects, especially on a fresh character. It applies multiplicatively with a Writ, so stacking copies can raise faction gains dramatically. On Elite, a Hero that normally grants 35 reputation gives 52 with a Writ alone, but with five Aether Shards adding +125% on top, the same Hero can hand out 118 reputation, higher even than a Mandate would provide.

Avoid wasting materials on capped effects

Some stacked effects overshoot 100% without any extra payoff. A 133% chance for Voidmarked chests is no better than reaching 100% and spending the freed slot on a different bonus. Before loading duplicates, check whether the effect has already reached its useful ceiling.

Because the altar resets whenever you return to the main menu, any boss you farm by restarting the game requires a fresh offering each time. Keep an eye on your material reserves, and only enable the mechanics your build can clear cleanly, since every added piece raises enemy damage and health on top of everything else you have offered.
