Koi Fish Scales are a crafting material added with the Into the Abyss update for Grounded 2, and they sit at the bottom of the pond in Brookhollow Park. You collect them to build the Koi Scale armor set, which improves how well you move and survive underwater. The good news is you never have to fight the Koi carp to get them.
Quick answer: Craft Diving Equipment and max out the Shovel Omni-Tool upgrade, then dive to the sunken Pirate Ship at the bottom of Skunk Pond and dig up the Koi Fish Scales around it. Surface quickly before the Water Chill debuff drains your health.

What you need before farming Koi Fish Scales
Two things gate this material. You need Diving Equipment so you can reach the deep floor of the pond, and you need the Shovel Omni-Tool upgrade at its maximum level so you can dig the scales out of the mud. Without both, you cannot collect them.
Diving works differently from swimming. You can swim on the surface with no gear at all, but once you go under you have a limited oxygen supply. The only way to refill air underwater is by using bubble plants, and that requires the Gil Tube equipped. On top of that, the Water Chill debuff wears you down the longer you stay under. Basic diving gear offers little protection against it, so keep your first dives short.

Before your first deep dive you need two pieces, the Fin Flops and the Gil Tube. Every material for both comes from around the surface of the pond, so you can gather it all without going deep.
| Item | Materials | Where to gather |
|---|---|---|
| Fin Flops | Water Boatman Fin, Eelgrass Strand, Wax | Surface of the pond and the Bridge zone |
| Gil Tube | Wax, Eelgrass Strand, Silk | Surface of the pond |

Where to find Koi Fish Scales in Skunk Pond
The scales sit on the floor of Skunk Pond, gathered around the sunken Pirate Ship. Getting there means passing several hostile creatures, including Toe Biter Nymphs, Tiger Mosquitoes, Tadpoles, and the aggressive Diving Bell Spiders. The giant Koi carp also patrol the water, but you only need to avoid them. There is no boss fight required to farm this material.

Craft the Koi Scale armor set
Once you have the scales, you can build the Koi Fish armor set. It improves your Swimming Speed, Diving Capacity, and Water Chill Resistance, which directly makes your next dives longer and safer.
The set is designed to grow out of the gear you already made. The Koi Fish Greaves use the Fin Flops as their base material, and the Helmet uses the Gil Tube, so you upgrade straight from your starter diving kit into the top-tier pieces without wasting anything.

There is also an intermediate set that uses Diving Bell Spider parts if you want a stepping stone. If you gather efficiently, though, you can skip straight to the Koi Scale gear from the moment you start farming, giving you the resistance you need to spend far more time exploring the depths of the pond.
