GTA 6 Console Frame Rate: 30 FPS at Launch, 60 FPS Still Unconfirmed

Grand Theft Auto 6 is running at 30 FPS on PlayStation 5 and Xbox during development, and that is the frame rate players should expect when it arrives on consoles. Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told visiting creators that the game is currently locked to 30 FPS, and that the studio has not committed to a 60 FPS performance mode at launch.

Quick answer: On PS5 and Xbox, GTA 6 targets 30 FPS at launch. A 60 FPS mode is not confirmed and may only come later, potentially after release.

What Rockstar has said about frame rate

Nelson’s comments came during a visit to Rockstar North, where a small group of content creators got an early hands-on look ahead of the GTA 6 Extended Look premiere on Netflix. He said that during this stage of development the consoles are running the game at 30 frames per second.

He also said the technical team still needs to determine whether a 60 FPS option will exist at launch or in the future, and that he did not yet have details on resolution or other technical qualities such as ray tracing. The takeaway is that 30 FPS is the confirmed target for now, and everything above it remains open.

Frame rate expectations by platform

PlatformConfirmed at launch60 FPS status
PlayStation 530 FPSNot confirmed
Xbox Series X/S30 FPSNot confirmed
PS5 ProNo separate target statedUnknown
PCNot launching at releaseWould not be capped at 30 FPS

It is not yet known whether the PS5 Pro, the most powerful current-generation console, will be able to push GTA 6 past 30 FPS at launch. Nothing specific has been shared about a higher frame rate mode or a 40 FPS option for that hardware.

Why 30 FPS fits Rockstar’s pattern

A 30 FPS launch would match how Rockstar has handled its recent open-world games. GTA 5 shipped locked at 30 FPS and only gained a 60 FPS performance mode years later, through its next-gen upgrade on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Red Dead Redemption 2 still does not have an official 60 FPS mode on current consoles.

Earlier leaks had pointed toward GTA 6 offering both Quality and 60 FPS performance modes at launch. Nelson’s comments suggest the situation is more cautious than that, with a 60 FPS mode described as possible in the future rather than guaranteed on day one.

What this means if you’re buying hardware

If you are weighing a PS5 against a PS5 Pro specifically to play GTA 6, it is worth waiting until Rockstar shares concrete performance details for each console. The studio has not confirmed which platforms, if any, will run the game above 30 FPS at launch.

A higher frame rate could eventually come through a post-launch patch, and the next generation of hardware, including the PS6 and Xbox’s Project Helix, may end up being where GTA 6 runs at 60 FPS or beyond. There is also a PC version planned for later, and that release would not be held to the 30 FPS console cap.

Note: Alongside the frame rate details, it was also confirmed that GTA 6 will not include a first-person mode at launch.

GTA 6 is set to launch on November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Until Rockstar publishes final specifications, 30 FPS is the only confirmed console target, and a 60 FPS mode should be treated as unconfirmed rather than expected.
