Dogs in Grand Theft Auto VI aren’t set dressing. Walk up to one and you get a small prompt menu with several distinct actions, including the one everybody cares about. It shows up on a pitbull sitting in a hallway inside the Victory Arms apartment building, where Jason and Lucia stop during a package pickup.

Quick answer: Aim at the dog with L2 to lock onto it, then press Triangle to pet. The dog reacts with its own animation instead of cutting to a canned scene.

Dog interaction buttons in GTA 6

The animal prompt works the same way as the general NPC interaction system. L2 focuses whatever you’re pointing at, and the face buttons fill in with whatever that target supports. On a dog, that gives you four options.

TrianglePET
CircleSCOLD
R1STUDY

Note: these are the PS5 labels, since the extended gameplay footage was captured on PlayStation 5. Xbox players should expect the standard Y / B / RB equivalents.

The prompt list grows after your first interaction

Before you do anything, the dog offers a single option: PRAISE. Once you engage with it, the list expands and scold, pet, and study fill in underneath. The animal is tracking the exchange within that moment, so the menu you see on approach isn’t the menu you’ll have thirty seconds later.

That’s the main thing to know if you press the prompt once, see only one option, and assume petting isn’t available. It is. You just haven’t started the interaction yet.

How to tell the pet worked

Your character leans down and the dog physically responds. There’s no fade, no camera takeover, and no scripted cutaway. If you’re standing too far from the animal, the DOG focus label won’t appear over it, and the face-button prompts won’t populate at all. Close the distance and the lock-on picks it up.

Where dogs appear in Vice City

The pitbull in Victory Arms lives there in the ordinary sense. There’s a food bowl on the floor, a cushion, and a framed photo nearby, and human owners are around. Dogs also turn up out in the world, including on the beach, and the wider map carries other wildlife such as swamp animals and seabirds.

The full four-option prompt, though, is the one confirmed on the Victory Arms pitbull. Whether the same menu attaches to every animal you meet across Leonida isn’t something to bank on yet.

What STUDY does

Study sits on R1 alongside pet and scold. It’s the same verb Rockstar used for observing animals in Red Dead Redemption 2, which suggests it’s an inspection action rather than a physical one, but the footage doesn’t show the result on screen. Scold likewise appears as a selectable option without a demonstrated outcome.

All of the above comes from official pre-release footage, so button mappings and prompt labels could shift before launch. If you want to watch the interaction play out, it happens early in the extended look, roughly two minutes in, during the Victory Arms hallway sequence.
