Most games wait until launch to talk money. Grand Theft Auto VI is already posting enormous pre-order numbers months before anyone can play it, and the figures are big enough to rival a blockbuster movie’s entire theatrical run. Here is where the estimates actually stand.
Quick answer: GTA 6 has generated an estimated $500 million from roughly 4.77 million pre-orders as of late August 2026, ahead of its November 19 launch. These are third-party estimates, not official Rockstar or Take-Two figures.

GTA 6 pre-order revenue so far
Based on Sensor Tower’s market analysis, GTA 6 had roughly 4.77 million pre-orders by late August 2026, bringing in nearly $500 million in gross revenue before release. The figure rose consistently throughout the summer before making a much bigger leap toward August’s end.
Rockstar and Take-Two have not verified these figures. Sensor Tower says it combines its own market data with statistical modeling to produce them. The company also purchased Video Game Insights in 2025; that service monitors PlayStation and Xbox activity through more than four million public player profiles, making these estimates unusually substantial for third-party data.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick lined up with that picture on the company’s most recent earnings call, describing GTA 6 pre-orders as “unprecedented and astonishing.” He declined to attach a specific number, arguing that pre-orders can be canceled and do not represent final sales.

How the Netflix Extended Look moved the numbers
The numbers were already substantial before August 27, then surged after Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look appeared on Netflix. Pre-orders recorded that day reached 436% above the previous day’s level.
The two-day stretch of August 27 and 28 came in at 572% over the preceding 30-day average. During it, an estimated 165,000 additional copies were ordered, taking the cumulative figure from 4.6 million up to 4.77 million.
PS5 vs Xbox Series X|S pre-order split
The platform gap is wide, and it favors Sony heavily. Here is the estimated breakdown as of September 15, 2026.
| Platform | Share | Est. units | Est. revenue |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | 77% | ~4.23 million | ~$413 million |
| Xbox Series X|S | 23% | ~1.27 million | ~$124 million |
PS5 accounts for the largest share, in line with the overall console market. PlayStation has topped this generation’s hardware rankings for much of its run, making GTA 6’s similar split unsurprising.
Why the $99.99 Ultimate Edition dominates
Players can choose between two GTA 6 editions: the $79.99 Standard Edition or the $99.99 Ultimate Edition. Typically, the pricier version makes up only a small share of preorders, but this release is going against that trend.
Sensor Tower’s breakdown assigns roughly 90% of all pre-orders to the Ultimate Edition. That makes sense for players planning to spend hundreds of hours in GTA Online, since the additional $20 is relatively minor and the package includes extra vehicles, weapons, clothing, stores, and other exclusive content. During the earnings call, Zelnick said Rockstar “got it right” with the pricing, and the buying pattern strongly supports that view.

Where pre-orders could land by launch
Sensor Tower’s Karl Kontus projects GTA 6 could reach around 25 million pre-orders by launch, which would translate to roughly $2 billion in sales before the game gets its first reviews. That remains a projection, but it reflects the pace already on record.
GTA 5 has moved over 230 million copies during its more-than-ten-year run. Before launch, GTA 6 is already posting figures that most games fail to reach over their entire commercial lifetimes; it releases on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Every figure here is a third-party estimate that updates over time. Rockstar and Take-Two have not published official pre-order totals, and the full financial picture will only be clear once the game ships and the revenue is recognized.
