At the Norgandian Settlement’s forge, Hal handles the smithing. His Manufacture menu begins with 37 recipes once he can use the forge for you. The total later rises to 83, including numerous entries obscured by black silhouettes and marked “???”. Here’s how to unlock the menu, expand it, and understand those unnamed entries.
Quick answer: Finish the side quest Hammer and Tongs to unlock Hal’s initial 37 recipes. Then complete Village Defense, which Dorin gives you at the settlement bonfire; the menu will contain 83 entries afterward.
Finish Hammer and Tongs to open Hal’s Manufacture list
Hal cannot forge for you until the side quest Hammer and Tongs is done. The quest has you gather a Winterweed Blossom and bring it back so he can brew a physic for his old injury. Clearing it rewards Azure Ore and Snowoak Bark, and it switches on his crafting menu.
Walk up to Hal at the forge and hold the talk key on him. The prompt reads F Hail (Hold to Talk), and it opens his menu with Manufacture, Buy, Sell, Talk, and Cancel. Pick Manufacture to open the Workshop screen and its “Manufacturable Gear” list. The footer reads “Select equipment to manufacture.”

At this stage the list has 37 rows: 20 weapons, 5 head armours, 5 body armours, 5 leg armours, and 2 cloaks. Two of the weapon rows are shields (Smithed Norgandian Shield and Smithed Volucrine Hardshield), and every weapon type carries two rows. The list opens with Smithed Barbaric Axe, Smithed Patterned Brand, Smithed Norgandian Shield, Smithed Volucrine Hardshield, Smithed Deerhorn Bow, and Smithed Zephyr’s Arc.

These two early rows give you a feel for the pricing. Smithed Barbaric Axe costs 9,000 G and needs Azure Ore x1.
Finishing other quests did not expand this list. It stayed at the same 37 rows through Rumbles in the North, Seeking the Sage, Sealed History, Flight in the Night, A Direwolf Delicacy, and When the Culling Gets Tough.

The side quest that grows Hal’s list is Village Defense. Dorin gives it to you at the bonfire in the settlement. He asks you to guard the village through the night while he tends to his father’s wounds.

What the expanded 83-recipe list contains
After Village Defense the list breaks down into 40 weapons (4 of them shields), 11 head armours, 11 body armours, 11 leg armours, and 10 cloaks. Each weapon type now shows four rows: the two original ones, one new named recipe, and one “???” row.
| Category | After Hammer and Tongs | After Village Defense |
|---|---|---|
| Weapons (incl. shields) | 20 (2) | 40 (4) |
| Head armour | 5 | 11 |
| Body armour | 5 | 11 |
| Leg armour | 5 | 11 |
| Cloaks | 2 | 10 |
| Total rows | 37 | 83 |

New named weapons
- Smithed Rimed Needle (sword)
- Smithed Stellar Plate (shield)
- Smithed Snowstorm Seeker (bow)
- Smithed Ice Talons (daggers)
- Smithed Dimpled Crystal (staff)
- Smithed Spinechiller, Smithed Dendrite, Smithed Gelid Branch, Smithed Frost Marrow, Smithed Frostflake Mirage

New named armour and cloaks
- For head armour, the new named recipes are (1) Smithed Thermal Bevor; (2) Smithed Band of Equilibrium; and (3) Smithed Oathtaker’s Hood.
- The new body-armour recipes are (1) Smithed Northbound Cuirass; (2) Smithed Swifthunt Half-Jacket; and (3) Smithed Robe of Hallowing.
- For leg armour, look for (1) Smithed Coldmarch Cuisses; (2) Smithed Infiltrator’s Hosen; and (3) Smithed Snowskip Skirt.
- Five cloak recipes have names: (1) Featherdown Blanket; (2) Arcane Cloak; (3) Winter-Wisp Cape; (4) Profane Cloak; and (5) Trihorn Pelisse. Cloak names don’t use the prefix “Smithed”.

Cloak names carry no “Smithed” prefix. The two original cloaks are Bloodstained Cloak and Direwolf Furcloak, so do not scroll past the cloak rows looking for a “Smithed” label that is not there.
What the “???” rows mean and how to read them
Of the 83 rows, 61 are named and 22 read “???”: one per weapon type (10 in total), plus three head, three body, three leg, and three cloak rows. A “???” row is a recipe the game is not naming yet. Its picture is a black silhouette and both its name and description show “???”.

These entries still provide recipe details. Highlight one to view the “Required Materials” panel, including Held/Needed counts, and the “Manufacturing Cost” showing its gold price. Materials you lack in sufficient quantities appear in red.

Materials appearing in the new recipes include Glacial Ore, Wintry Dragon Scale, Bloodstained Plate, Curvestone, Baleful Hoof, Bugatooth, Midnight-Black Tatter, Maleficent Heart, Smoldering Hide, Nokken Tail, Grotesquely Gnarled Tooth, and Snatching-Beast’s Talon.
Costs and materials read off the Workshop screen
These figures are taken straight from the panel. The three “???” cloaks sit at the top end at 35,000 G, 40,000 G, and 50,000 G.
| Recipe | Cost | Materials |
|---|---|---|
| 9,000 G | Azure Ore x1 | |
| 15,000 G | Snowoak Bark x2, Ponderous Bone x1, Rectrix x3 | |
| 15,000 G | Glacial Ore x4, Wintry Dragon Scale x1, Bloodstained Plate x2 | |
| 12,000 G | Glacial Ore x2, Bugatooth x6 | |
| “???” sword | 20,000 G | Curvestone x2, Baleful Hoof x1, Bloodstained Plate x3 |
| “???” shield | 15,000 G | Curvestone x1, Bloodstained Plate x2 |
| 20,000 G | Rectrix x5, Smoldering Hide x2 | |
| 22,000 G | — | |
| 27,000 G | Wintry Dragon Scale x2, Nokken Tail x2, Glacial Ore x8 | |
| 30,000 G | Grotesquely Gnarled Tooth x3 | |
| 33,000 G | Midnight-Black Tatter x2, Baleful Hoof x1 | |
| “???” cloak (40,000) | 40,000 G | Baleful Hoof x3, Midnight-Black Tatter x3 |
Once Village Defense is cleared and Hal greets you with his line about forging more elaborate pieces, you can plan your material runs straight off the panel, including for the silhouetted “???” recipes, since their costs and ingredient counts are already on display.
