Halloween: The Game – How the Lights Out Michael Myers Build Works

The ability picks, weapon choice, and kill order that turn Haddonfield's power grid into Michael's biggest advantage.

The ability picks, weapon choice, and kill order that turn Haddonfield’s power grid into Michael’s biggest advantage.

Light is the one thing in Halloween: The Game that genuinely limits Michael Myers. He cannot enter or leave Shape Jump while standing in a lit area, and residents are safest in bright rooms with the phone working and a car in the driveway. The Lights Out loadout attacks that directly: instead of chasing people, you strip away their power, their phones, and their visibility, then move through the dark houses that are left.

Quick answer: Run Reality Tear, Shadow Strike, and Blackout. Throw shadow knives at power boxes and phone lines to cut them, use Blackout indoors, and Shape Jump in through the darkness.

Lights Out loadout: abilities and what each one does

Michael always carries two traits, and you fill three ability slots on top of them. Killer Sense drops you into first person to read sound cues and build Stalk on a target. Shape Jump is your movement tool, letting you travel unseen through shadow, use Shape Dash to cover ground, and phase through doors and windows as long as the lights are off and nobody is looking at you.

AbilityEffectRole in the build
Reality TearEnters or exits Shape Jump ignoring the light restrictionMandatory; entry, escape, surprise grabs
Shadow StrikeThrows a shadow knife that blinds and slowsCuts power boxes and phone lines; stops runners
BlackoutKills powered equipment and lights in a radiusInstant darkness inside an occupied house

Reality Tear is the non-negotiable pick. Without it, every entry and exit depends on finding a dark spot with no witnesses, which falls apart the moment residents flip the lights back on. The loadout screen lists the knife ability as Shadow Stroke, so do not go hunting for a second, separate ability.

Cut power boxes and phone lines with the shadow knife

This is the part that makes the build worth running. A shadow knife thrown directly at an outdoor power box or a phone line shuts it off on the spot. You do not need to walk up and interact with anything, which means you can darken a house from across the street while residents inside are still looting.

The effect also sticks. A box knocked out by a knife stays out until someone manually switches it back on, so residents either sit in the dark or send a person outside to fix it, alone. Cutting the phone line stops calls for help, which delays police showing up and buys you more time to stalk uninterrupted.

Darken the house before you enter it, not after. With the lights already off, Shape Jump can carry you straight through a locked door or window without needing Reality Tear at all.

Use Blackout when you are already inside

Blackout disables every piece of powered equipment within a decent radius, including lights, and it will temporarily kill a car or bike engine if someone is trying to drive away nearby. Unlike a knifed power box, it wears off after a few seconds, so treat it as a window rather than a permanent state.

Its best use is inside a house you cannot reach the breaker for, or one that is bolted shut. Pop it, and everyone in the building is suddenly in total darkness with you free to shift through walls and windows. Residents caught mid-room have nowhere to go, and downs come easily.

Panicked or injured residents sometimes try to escape through glass windows and die doing it. Those still count, so do not assume a target got away just because they left the room.

Shadow Strike in a chase

The knife does no damage, but the blind and slow it applies is enough to break a resident who is trying to loop you around cars and fences. Land it, close the gap with a Shape Dash, and you have a free grab or swing. It is also a clean way to interrupt an armed player who is lining up a hit on you.

Weapon pick for the Lights Out build

Every starting weapon comes with a trade-off, so the choice depends on what you want the build to do outside of ability use.

WeaponStrengthTrade-off
Wood AxeHigh damage, chops wooden doors fastSlower kill animation
PickaxeHigh damage and reachSlow heavy swing
PitchforkCan be thrown at a downed targetLower damage than the axe or pickaxe

For raw killing power, take the Wood Axe or Pickaxe. At Bloodthirst tier 3, either one can put down a full-health resident in two heavy attacks, and the axe’s ability to break wooden doors means locking themselves in does not save anyone. The Pitchfork trades damage for a throw, which suits finishing downed residents from a distance, and it is the pick if you are levelling the weapon rather than optimising the match.

Kill order: NPCs and Special Targets before players

You do not have to kill the human players to win. Scoring is what matters, and named Special Targets are worth the most points, with lower-priority residents filling in the rest. If they escape, those points go to the survivor side instead.

Work the map edges first and knife the power boxes and phone lines on the houses nearest you. Every darkened building becomes somewhere you can enter without Reality Tear on cooldown.
Use Killer Sense to find an isolated resident and stalk them properly before you commit. Stalk weakens them, marks them through walls, and unlocks stronger executions.

Finish that first full kill to reach Bloodthirst tier 1. From then on, activating Shape Jump or Reality Tear shows you where the high-priority residents are, so you can move between them instead of searching.
Clear the Special Targets one house at a time. Knife the box, shift inside, and check closets and hiding spots, since residents that have heard about you will already be tucked away.

Only then go after the human players. By tier 2 and 3 you have more damage, better grab strength, shorter cooldowns, and faster Shape Jump travel, which is what you need when a group fights back.

How to confirm the build is working

The HUD tells you plainly whether the darkness plan is holding.

  • Knifed boxes drop a building’s lights immediately, and Blackout shows a “BLACKOUT READY TO USE” prompt when it is available again.
  • “BLOODTHIRST TIER 1 REACHED” confirms your power curve has started; later tiers announce themselves the same way.
  • Stalking a named resident posts a “Discovered” message, and killing one posts a “SPECIAL TARGET … KILLED” banner.
  • Red on-screen warnings such as “INSIDE LIGHT…” mean you are somewhere Shape Jump will not release you without Reality Tear.
  • A clean run ends on “MICHAEL VICTORY” with your score and bonuses, including the points awarded for killing every priority target.

What can undo the build mid-match

Standing in light drains Bloodthirst over time, and being knocked down costs a real chunk of it, so wading into a cluster of armed residents is expensive even when you survive it. Michael cannot be killed, but a group of players backed by officers or Dr. Loomis can fill an arrest meter, down him, and ship him back to Smith’s Grove. Keeping phone lines cut is as much about slowing that sequence as it is about stalking quietly.

Run this way and the build’s advantage compounds. Each box you break leaves another dark house you can walk through at will, and every resident who steps outside to restore power is a target standing alone in the street.
