Halloween: The Game: How to Destroy a Police Car in Chapter 5

Both cruisers must be wrecked before you leave Haddonfield, and restarting the level can wipe your progress.

Both cruisers must be wrecked before you leave Haddonfield, and restarting the level can wipe your progress.

The last optional challenge in Chapter 5, Into The Shadows, asks Michael to wreck a police car before slipping out of Haddonfield. The task reads as if one cruiser is enough, but the challenge is more particular than its wording suggests, and it can quietly refuse to register if you reset the level. Here is exactly what makes it complete.

Quick answer: Smash both police cars with melee attacks (about six hits with the knife) until each car’s hood pops, its lights go dark, and the engine smokes, then reach an escape route without getting caught. Do this in a single run without restarting the chapter, or the challenge may not count.

What to do before you wreck a car

Michael starts this chapter weakened after being shot, so he cannot use Shape Jump right away. Two police cars sit around the suburb, and one of them patrols while searching for your position. Before you touch either car, settle a couple of things first, because destroying a cruiser changes how the map behaves.

Wrecking a car calls more officers to the scene. If you still want the challenge to fully stalk a police officer inside the Wallace house, finish that one first. Once a car is destroyed, the cops who were inside the house may relocate, which removes your chance to complete that stalk.

It also helps to get Shape Jump back before the streets fill with police. Fill Michael’s Tier 2 Bloodthirst meter completely to unlock the ability again, which gives you a way to slip out without being swarmed after the alarm goes up.

How to destroy a police car

Move along the streets and locate the police cruisers. There are two of them in the neighborhood, and one drives around while it hunts for you, so watch its patrol before you commit to a spot.

Walk up to a car and use your melee attack. No prompt appears, so keep hitting the vehicle. Continue until the hood pops open, the lights switch off, and the engine starts smoking. With the knife equipped, this takes six hits.
Repeat the same process on the second cruiser. Although the challenge text says “Destroy any police car before you escape,” it only registers reliably once both cars have been wrecked, so treat destroying a single car as insufficient.

Why the challenge may not complete

Two specific problems stop this challenge from ticking off, and both are easy to trip over.

ProblemFix
Only one cruiser destroyedWreck both police cars in the same run before escaping.
Level was restarted mid-attemptComplete the chapter from the start without restarting. Restarting can prevent the challenge from triggering.

If you do need to restart, do not use a mid-level reset. Return all the way to the main menu and reselect the chapter. This drops you back at the same spot and still leaves the challenge available to complete.

Confirming the challenge is done

Destroying the cars does not finish the challenge on its own. You still need to leave Haddonfield. Head for one of the escape routes and reach it before the police catch you. The Sewer Escape is available in this chapter, and an alternate route over the train tracks can be found by heading left instead of north.

With both cruisers wrecked and an exit reached, the challenge mark shows as complete when the chapter ends. If you are avoiding Dr. Loomis for the separate detection challenge, keep clear of the large red marker on the map while you make your way to the exit.

The main thing to remember is to treat this as a two-car job handled in one uninterrupted run. Wreck both cruisers, keep the option to reach the sewer or the tracks open, and only leave once the second car is smoking.
