Honkai Star Rail: Best Rin Tohsaka Teams for Version 4.4

The lineups that make the most of Rin's Gem Energy loop, her Archer joint attack, and her hypercarry potential.

The lineups that make the most of Rin’s Gem Energy loop, her Archer joint attack, and her hypercarry potential.

Rin Tohsaka arrives in Honkai: Star Rail as one of the two Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works] collaboration units in Version 4.4. She is a 5-star Quantum character on the Path of Erudition, built to spend and recover Skill Points, bank her own resource called Gem Energy, and pair off with Archer through a shared Joint Follow-Up Attack. Her best teams almost all read the same way because her kit is aimed squarely at one partner.

Quick answer: Run Rin as a sub-DPS behind Archer, with Sparkle in the third slot and a sustain or extra amplifier in the fourth. If you want her as a main DPS instead, drop Archer and pair her with Sparkle plus Cerydra and a healer, but that route needs Eidolon investment to compete.

Why Rin’s teams are built around Archer

Rin gains 1 Gem Energy every time an ally spends or recovers a Skill Point, and she buffs that ally’s CRIT DMG by 70% for 2 turns whenever they do. Once she holds 15 or more Gem Energy, or the team has 7 or more Skill Points, her Skill becomes the enhanced Second Magic Experiment, which chains bounce hits for up to 33 cycles. Everything about that loop wants teammates who move Skill Points constantly.

Archer is the reason the loop clicks. While he is on the field, Rin gains the Freeform Tohsaka Style Joint Follow-Up Attack, which fires after his Skill when the team drops to 3 or fewer Skill Points or after he uses his Skill five times during Circuit Connection. The joint attack hits every enemy using both characters’ ATK and refunds 4 Skill Points to the party. On top of that, Rin shares her 150% ATK boost and 15% Quantum RES PEN with Archer on entering combat, and she raises the team’s Skill Point cap by 2.

Note: Outside of an Archer core or a Cerydra hypercarry setup, Rin loses most of her value. She cannot amplify other damage dealers the way she boosts Archer, so slotting her next to an unrelated carry is usually worse than just running another Support.

Rin Tohsaka’s best team compositions

The Archer duo is her strongest and most flexible option, and it is friendly to free-to-play accounts because Archer, Dan Heng • Permansor Terrae, and several sustains have all been handed out at various points. The fourth slot flexes between a healer for safety and a second amplifier if you want to push damage in a sustainless setup.

The Archer sub-DPS core

In this setup Archer is the primary damage dealer and Rin sits behind him as a sub-DPS and amplifier. Her Ultimate, An Gal Ta Ki Gal Šè, adds a 20% vulnerability to all enemies for 3 turns while returning a Skill Point, and her AoE damage cleans up weaker enemies so Archer can focus his single-target firepower. The Joint Follow-Up Attack is especially useful when the field is crowded.

Sparkle is not optional here. She restores Skill Points with her Ultimate, action-advances Archer with her Skill, and stacks CRIT DMG, ATK, and all-type RES PEN. Because her Skill Point generation feeds Rin’s Gem Energy, removing her tends to collapse the whole rotation. Treat her as a locked member of any Archer-Rin build.

For the fourth slot, pick based on how much risk you want to take:

  • Dan Heng • Permansor Terrae gives ATK buffs and shields, and he was available for free to most accounts.
  • Huohuo heals, restores energy for faster Ultimates, and buffs ATK, making her the safe choice for harder content.
  • Mortenax Blade turns the team sustainless, adding defense reduction, vulnerability, and a taunt that soaks incoming hits. Welt is an alternative that delays enemies so the team takes fewer attacks.

The Rin hypercarry team

Without Archer, Rin can step up as the main damage dealer, though this gives up her Joint Follow-Up Attack entirely. The payoff comes from her enhanced Skill, which can dump enormous Gem Energy into a single burst turn. Sparkle stays in the lineup to keep Skill Points flowing, while Huohuo covers healing, energy, and an ATK boost.

Cerydra is the standout partner in this build. She significantly increases the damage of Rin’s enhanced Skills and can duplicate a Skill without consuming Gem Energy in the right conditions, letting you set up a much larger burst once Rin has stockpiled resources. Mortenax Blade can take the third slot instead if you prefer defense shred over duplication.

Keep in mind this route asks more of your account. Rin’s personal damage amplifiers sit behind her Eidolons, and E1 in particular refunds spent Gem Energy as Shadow Gem, which fuels her next enhanced Skill. As a main DPS she really wants that E1 to hit competitive numbers.

Speed tuning and stat targets

The one hard requirement across every Rin team is Speed. To land consistent Joint Follow-Up Attacks and keep her Gem Energy cycle moving, she needs to act ahead of Sparkle. Aim to clear the 134 Speed breakpoint at minimum, and make sure Rin’s total Speed sits above Sparkle’s in Archer teams.

StatTarget
CRIT Rate70% (up to 100% as main DPS)
CRIT DMG120% or more
Speed134+ and faster than Sparkle
ATK3,000+ (no hard floor)

You know the loop is working when Rin’s Skill lights up as Second Magic Experiment on her turn and the enhanced hits chain into multiple targets. If it stays a plain single-target Skill, she is short on Gem Energy or the team is not spending enough Skill Points, which usually means Sparkle is being held back or Rin is acting too slowly to catch the joint attack window.

The short version: is that Rin rewards planning more than raw stats. Lock in Sparkle, decide whether Archer or Cerydra is your damage engine, tune Rin’s Speed above her Harmony partner, and the Gem Energy loop takes care of the rest. Her banner runs alongside the Fate collaboration in Version 4.4, so there is a long window to test the pairing before committing deeper into Eidolons.
