The Fallen is the first true boss Rose faces in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. It occupies a submerged chamber at the lowest point of the Paris sewers, before a huge sealed gate. Rose has only her starting equipment at this stage. The fight is about spotting its tells and striking during recovery, not dealing raw damage. To reach it, pass through four sewer districts and meet two spirits who offer clues. Each clue gives information about the fight.
Quick answer: Go from Undercity through Ruined Market, Central Sewer Drain, Sewer Reservoir and Path of the Rat. Break its thrown cross with your weapon, slide through its claw combo, and slide under its whip attacks.
The Fallen location: Route from the Sewers to the Gate to the Catacombs
The Fallen’s arena is in the Gate to the Catacombs district of Paris Streets. The route is linear, but the game uses it to teach movement. You will need wall jumps and slides before you reach the boss, and you will need them again during the fight. Rose starts with the Family’s Grace relic equipped. When she takes a hit, the locket blocks that attack and freezes every enemy nearby. It then has a 60-second cooldown.

The Fallen has 800 health, so a few clean punish windows end the fight quickly. Most players arrive around level 2 or 3. You don’t need to grind first, because levels only raise base attack and defense. What matters is knowing which moves you can slide through and which ones you need to jump.

Phase 1: Thrown cross and three-hit claw combo
The opening phase uses only two attacks. The first is a spinning golden cross that flies out and then comes back like a boomerang, so it can hit you going out and coming back. Hit it with your weapon once it’s in range and it breaks, which is the second spirit’s hint in action. Cursed Flame destroys it in mid-air too, and you can jump over it in a pinch. Swing at the right moment, though. A missed swing locks Rose in her attack animation.
The second move starts with a leap, followed by three claw swipes. The Fallen faces the same way for the first two, then turns around for the final swipe. Dash toward it and slide under its legs during those opening swings. This is more reliable than retreating, and puts Rose behind the boss. Land one or two hits, then get clear before it turns for the third strike. After the combo, take the brief opening to land two or three more hits safely.

Don’t finish a full combo after every dodge. A couple of hits and a retreat is safer than eating the next attack.
Phase 2: Grapple swing, ground slam, and whip grab
When The Fallen has lost about one-third of its health, it roars to begin phase two. Its claw combo and cross remain in play. The cross now sweeps across the entire platform, making it impossible to outrun; jump over it or destroy it instead. The Fallen also adds three whip attacks.

| Attack | Tell | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Grapple swing | Hooks the gold ring at top center | Slide under the low point in the middle |
| Ground slam | Drops toward the left or right edge | Stay clear, jump the shockwave |
| Horizontal whip grab | Wind-up about a second before | Slide forward under it or jump |
| Full-length cross | Same throw as phase 1 | Break it or jump it |
For the swing, move to the center and slide forward under the bottom of the arc. Staying out of the center also avoids it, but then you are badly placed for the slam. You can also hit The Fallen mid-swing with a jumping sword strike or a spell to knock it to the ground. That opens the longest damage window of the fight, but the timing is tight. If you’d rather stay airborne, the walls on either side support wall jumps and double jumps, which keep you above the corner dives and the rolling crosses.
Watch the whip grab most carefully: it can reach nearly across the whole room. If it catches Rose, it coils around her and leaves her open to a follow-up attack, so the far edge isn’t safe. Slide toward the whip as it releases or jump over it, then strike during its recovery.
Drink potions in the gaps between attack cycles. Keep at least one for the phase change, when the attack pattern shifts.
The Fallen stats and immunities
| Stat | Value |
|---|---|
| Health | 800 |
| Attack | 19 |
| XP | 400 |
| Location | Paris Streets, Gate to the Catacombs |
| Rewards | Holy Cross, The Fallen’s Key |
Several crowd-control effects do nothing against The Fallen, so check your spell loadout before the fight:

- Freeze, petrify, launch into the air and slam down
- Chains of Justice root and stun
- Chronomantic Dive slow
- Freezing Path link
- Infernal Pyre launch
Bleed and burn are not on its immunity list.
Absorbing The Fallen Arcana and unlocking Holy Cross
The finishing hit shows a diagonal slash, after which The Fallen crumples into a glowing yellow orb. During the absorption phase, hold E on keyboard or RB on controller to pull its power into Rose. You’ll know the absorption succeeded when Rose levels up, the Holy Cross card appears with a See Spell prompt, and the image on The Fallen card in her deck changes to the monster.
A corrupted cross is sent flying by Holy Cross, striking anything along its route. It comes back to Rose after covering a fixed distance or colliding with a wall. To equip it, go to the Equipment menu, choose the Arcana currently equipped (Cursed Flame initially), and replace it with Holy Cross.
| Holy Cross | Value |
|---|---|
| Arcana card | |
| Attack power | 30 |
| Mana cost | 50 |
Each Arcana has Works of Mercy, which are tasks that unlock that spell’s gifts. Holy Cross has three:
- Find 3 different whip-type weapons
- Defeat five enemies with one cross; they don’t need to fall at the same time.
- Kill 10 enemies with a whip attack
The gifts add a second cross per cast, make the cross deal more damage the farther it is from Rose, and refund 10 percent of the mana cost per enemy hit when you catch the returning cross. That refund caps at 60 percent.
A brief telepathic exchange follows. The Fallen has no memory of its former identity; it recalls taking innocent lives to claim their souls, forced to obey a voice it could not resist. Rose’s response captures her outlook:
“You do not doubt what I say? Perhaps I am trying to trap you.” — “It’s not a trap if I suspect a trap. It’s just a mystery to uncover.”
The Fallen’s Key, the Arcane Whip, and the other two guardians
The Fallen also drops The Fallen’s Key, a purple gem and the first of three keys used to unlock the Catacombs’ sealed door. Insert it into the arena’s glowing gate. The upper-left branch then lights up, and the “Unlock the Gate to the Catacombs” objective appears with cards for the two other key-holders.

| Guardian | Arena | Health / Attack | Rewards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paris Streets, Gate to the Catacombs | 800 / 19 | Holy Cross, The Fallen’s Key | |
| Paris Streets, Roof of the Tower | 1800 / 24 | Infernal Pyre, The Warrior’s Key | |
| Holy Innocents’ Cemetery, Ossuary of the Innocents | 1500 / 24 | Petrifying Gaze, The Prophetess’s Key |
Head right from the arena to trigger a short cutscene that grants the Arcane Whip in the Abandoned Sewers. To use this traversal ability, point the movement input toward a glowing anchor or enemy and activate the Arcane Whip button; Rose will latch on and swing across gaps she couldn’t cross in the early sewers. This ability is separate from the whip weapon class, which Rose finds elsewhere. The basic Whip weapon, for example, is in the Catacombs of Paris.
With one lock lit and the Arcane Whip unlocked, the side paths you passed in Undercity are open. The Warrior and The Prophetess now hold the last two keys to the Catacombs.
