Becoming an Arrancar is the final Hollow evolution in VV: Ultimatum. Removing your mask trades your Cero and roar for a humanoid form, a full weapon moveset, and access to the Resurrección transformation. The catch is timing. The stage you are in when you rip off the mask permanently decides how many trait slots you carry for the rest of the character’s life.
Quick answer: Reach Vasto Lorde, lock in your four traits, then press L to remove your mask. This makes you a Vastocar with the maximum four trait slots. Pressing L earlier as a Menos permanently caps you at two slots and cannot be undone.

When to remove your mask: trait slots by stage
Hollow traits are permanent bonuses you collect by consuming defeated Hollows. Once you become an Arrancar, you can no longer gain new traits, and whatever you are holding is frozen in place. Because of that, the point where you press L matters more than anything else in the route.
| Stage when you press L | Result | Trait slots | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Menos | Menoscar | 2 (locked) | Avoid — dead end |
| Adjuchas | Adjucar | 3 | Workable mid-tier |
| Vasto Lorde | Vastocar | 4 (max) | Best path |
Note: The Menoscar path is the one to steer clear of. Two trait slots forever severely limit your build, and the only way to reverse it is to wipe your character and start again. Wait until Vasto Lorde so all four slots are open before you commit.

The Hollow route is a linear chain that unlocks stronger forms and extra trait slots as you go. The full order runs Fishbone to Menos to Adjuchas to Vasto Lorde, and only then to Arrancar. Push the red story quests to move between stages, and farm missions or open-world Hollows to fill progression bars. Quincies and Shinigami count toward progression, while Arrancars do not.
Trait capacity grows as you climb. Fishbone and Menos hold two traits, Adjuchas opens a third slot, and Vasto Lorde unlocks the fourth. That fourth slot is the whole reason to wait, so reach Vasto Lorde and finish collecting the traits you want before touching the mask.
How to remove your mask and confirm the transformation

L to rip off your mask and begin the Arrancar transformation. You know it worked when the game hands you a character customization prompt and your model shifts into its humanoid Arrancar form.
If you evolved as a Vastocar, you already have your Resurrección weapon and can equip it. On PC, press E twice. On console, tap down on the D-pad.
How traits work once you are an Arrancar
There is an important difference between a Vasto Lorde and an Arrancar. In base form, your traits are switched off. You rely on your weapon moveset, and your stats come only from Build Points and your Clan, which leaves base-form Arrancar weaker than Vasto Lorde.
Your traits only activate during Resurrección. That transformation is a burst window that turns on every trait at once, delivers a large power spike, and enhances your weapon behavior. It is time-limited, so plan when you release it. If you also want Cero back, you can rebuy it through the Kido skill tree for Arrancars and Vastocars.
Unlocking Resurrección after the mask comes off
Resurrección is the Arrancar’s signature release, and it opens up once you are past Level 25. The process runs through meditation, an inner world, and a boss fight against your own past forms.

Beating the Resurrección fight
The final trial is a parry check across three phases. Reaching Level 35 or higher makes it far more forgiving. Play defensively and prioritize posture over raw damage.
| Phase | Opponent | How to handle it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Your original Hollow (Fishbone) | Do not rush in — he hits through your M1s. Wait, block, and parry his fixed-speed attacks until his posture breaks. Ignore feints. |
| 2 | Menos Grande | His main move is stomps with some Ceros. Parry by blocking as the foot peaks, then land 1–2 hits. Back away constantly so he cannot spin behind your shield. You can tank Ceros with full posture. |
| 3 | Adjuchas | Same as phase one — stay defensive, watch for openings, and play for posture. Tanking the Ceros here is fine, so do not bother parrying them. |
Clearing all three waves unlocks your Resurrección, which is the last major step of the Hollow route. Because your damage burst comes from that release, Clans that boost it are worth prioritizing. Cifer stands out with roughly +20% Resurrección power, while Aaroniero suits Kido-hybrid builds, Jaegerjaquez favors melee, and Kufang backs weapon-focused play. Lock your build, reach Vasto Lorde first, and the mask-removal decision becomes the easy part.
