Monster in the Night is one of the trickier early side quests in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, mostly because it hands you no quest marker and gives you a short window to finish it. The objective sounds simple, defeat a creature called “The Phantom”, but the catch is that the monster only shows up after dark, and the person who gives you the reward only shows up during the day.

Quick answer: Pick up the quest in Chapter 5 from an NPC in Dagsion’s City Streets, use Auto-Activities at the inn to pass time to evening/night, fight the Phantom in the eastern alley, then wait for daytime and report back to claim your reward.

Where to pick up Monster in the Night

You can start this quest in Part 1, Chapter 5 by speaking with an NPC found on the upper level of the City Streets area of Dagsion, behind the Merchant Vendor beside the Shopping Arcade. The NPC says a monster has been raiding shops at night before disappearing into the city streets.

Whether this quest appears for you can depend on your protagonist and the order in which you clear Part 1 paths, and its story framing shifts noticeably when Leda is your protagonist. If it shows up on your run, the steps below are the same.

Finish this before Chapter 5 ends. If the chapter closes first, the quest fails and becomes permanently unavailable.

Pass time until the monster appears

The Phantom only roams the streets when it is dark, so you cannot fight it during the day. The quest text says “night”, but the creature actually starts appearing in the evening, from around 18:00, so any time from evening onward works.

You have a few ways to advance the clock:

  • Do Auto-Activities at the inn until the time reads evening or night (each turn is 6 hours).
  • Perform town activities that consume turns.
  • Leave town and return once it has become nighttime.

Auto-Activities at the inn are the cleanest option because you control exactly how many turns you burn. Advance one or two turns until the clock shows evening or the moon icon, then head out.

Find and defeat the Phantom

Once it is evening or night, head to the City Streets area and move toward the eastern side of the map. The spot sits east of the Divination Booth, in the square-shaped section, and can also be reached by heading to the easternmost point past the inn and turning down the side alley.
Use your map to find a hollow quest icon lacking a central star. The battle site cannot be reached by fast travel, so head toward the alley using that icon as your guide. Continue along the route; the beast’s tail appears before it pivots to face you.
Walk into the creature to start a Clash. The Phantom is a Demonic Beast with 48 HP and no special attacks, so it goes down fast. Link your attacks with party members and it can fall in a single Link Attack. The real difficulty of this quest is locating it, not winning the fight.

If you just returned from a long journey, rest at the inn to heal your party before stepping into the alley.

Report back during the day to finish the quest

Beating the Phantom does not close out the quest on its own. The quest giver is only present during the day, since they told you upfront that they stay home at night. After the fight, do another Auto-Activity to skip back to daytime, then return to the same NPC in the City Streets to turn it in.

You know it worked when the NPC thanks you and the quest completes, paying out 1,500 gold and 100 Renown. That gold and Renown go a long way this early, especially toward buying gifts to recruit new allies, so it is worth clearing before the chapter wraps up.
