How to Complete The Stranger in Gothic 1 Remake (All Chromanin Locations)

Track down all six Chromanin volumes in order and claim the hidden reward chest beneath the Fog Tower.

Track down all six Chromanin volumes in order and claim the hidden reward chest beneath the Fog Tower.

The Stranger is a hidden quest in Gothic 1 Remake that no character ever offers you. It starts the moment you read the first volume of a book called Chromanin, looted from a Skeleton Mage deep beneath the Fog Tower. Six volumes exist in total, each ending with a riddle that points toward the next, and you must collect them in order. Finishing the chain awards 2,550 experience, the complete six-volume Chromanin, and access to a reward chest holding some of the strongest gear in the game.

Quick answer: Kill the Skeleton Mage under the Fog Tower and read Chromanin 1 to begin. Then read each volume in sequence to reveal the next location, collect Chromanin 2 through 5, and return to the Skeleton Mage room to read Chromanin 6. Reading the final book completes the quest and opens the previously sealed rooms, including the reward chest.

Before you start The Stranger

The Remake re-hid every Chromanin volume, so knowing the original game’s locations will not help you here. The books also do not spawn in their spots until you have read the previous volume, even if you have already visited those places. You must follow the chain in order.

It makes sense to begin during Chapter 3, when you travel to the Fog Tower to meet Diego near the end of The Water Mages’ Plan. Before entering the basement, prepare for large groups of Skeletons and at least one Skeleton Mage. Bring healing items, solid gear, and well-developed stats, and carry a blunt weapon for the Stone Golem you will face later.

Chromanin 1 location (Fog Tower basement)

Enter the Fog Tower and head down into the basement. A few Skeletons wait at the bottom, so clear them before moving into the linked caverns below, which are easy to get lost in.
From the cave entrance, keep to the left at each fork until the path opens onto a ledge you can drop down. This lands you in the ritual chamber where the Skeleton Mage spawns Skeletons.
Go straight for the Skeleton Mage and kill it first to stop the flow of Skeletons. Loot Chromanin 1 from its body and read it to start the quest.

The riddle reads: “The prudent fisherman knows not to cast his line, for there are no fish on the other side of the water.” Your quest log hints at the lake.

Chromanin 2 location (cottage across the lake)

Travel to the pool south of the New Camp, near Jan’s cabin. Swim across to the far side of the water.
There is a single run-down fisherman’s cottage on the opposite shore. Enter it and grab Chromanin 2 from the table at the far end of the room, then read it.

The riddle reads: “The curious scholar seeks beyond the words of many, for they sit but idly in the mountainside.” This points toward a library near a mountain.

Chromanin 3 location (Mountain Fortress)

The third volume is best collected while working on The Focus at the Mountain Fortress in Chapter 3, since you will be solving the same bookshelf puzzle along the way.

From the fortress entrance, take the left tower and climb the ruined staircase to the top. Enter the room with the bookshelves.
Activate the three shelves in the correct order to open the hidden fireplace passage. Worm, then Wolf, then Mole Rat.
Go through the opened fireplace, follow the hallway to the right, and climb the ladder. At the top, drop through the hole in the wall on the left, turn around, and head through the door.
Keep left and enter the room at the end of the hallway, where the Royal Guard Armor chest sits. Chromanin 3 rests on a lectern right beside it. Reading it grants +700 XP.

The riddle reads: “The bloodied warrior feeds from tormented bones, for a barrier may yet contain another.” This points to a prison or dungeon.

Chromanin 4 location (Old Camp dungeon)

The fourth volume sits in the torture chamber beneath the Old Camp castle. If you have done Bar the Truth, you will recognize the area.

Head to the house where Bullit sits and walk straight past him toward the castle. Go down the stairs on the right and through the door in the basement.
Keep right and continue straight down the hallway, then take the stairs down again. Move through the series of doors until the path forces you right.
Follow the narrow staircase to the next door and pass through it into the torture cellar. Chromanin 4 is on the table to your left. Reading it grants +850 XP.

Note: Some of the doors on the way are locked, so bring lockpicks. If you have reached Chapter 4 and the castle guards are hostile, the simplest approach is to run past them, drop down the ladder, and fight them one at a time as they follow.

The riddle reads: “The hardened guardian knows to tell remnants from ruins, for he need not ask for whom the bell tolls.” This points to a ruin with a bell.

Chromanin 5 location (Old Citadel)

The fifth volume is in the Old Citadel near the Mountain Fortress, making it a natural pickup during A Shaman Shunned in Chapter 4. A Stone Golem guards the book, so keep a blunt weapon ready since edged and piercing weapons do nothing to it.

At the ruins, head to the back and find the bell perched on a ledge. Climb up and push it off to smash the metal grate on the floor below.
Drop through the opening and take the path through the broken wall until you reach the large chamber with the Stone Golem.
Defeat the golem, then collect Chromanin 5 from the small round table just to the left after entering. Reading it grants +1,000 XP.

Tip: Before leaving, open the chest in the Old Citadel for an Essence of Strength, which permanently raises your Strength by 1.

The riddle reads: “The patient seeker finds me where it all began.” That sends you back to the start.

Chromanin 6 location and completing The Stranger

Return to the Skeleton Mage room beneath the Fog Tower where you found Chromanin 1. The blue barriers that previously sealed two doors in that room will now be gone.
Turn right as you enter and go past the stairs into the small room with the lectern in the middle. Chromanin 6 is displayed on that lectern.
Read the final volume to complete The Stranger, then defeat the Skeletons that spawn. The quest log closes out and you earn one of the rarest Gothic achievements.

You know it worked when the quest registers as completed in your log and the achievement unlocks. If a book will not appear in its spot, you most likely have not read the previous volume yet, since the volumes only surface in order.

The Stranger rewards

The real payoff sits in the chest inside the room across from the lectern, which was sealed behind a blue barrier until you finished the chain. Opening it gives you the following:

  • Storm of Fire spell
  • Ring of Greater Invincibility
  • Inscription of Transform into Shadowbeast
  • 5x Parchment
  • Elixir of Magic Energy
  • Summon Skeleton scroll

The Ring of Greater Invincibility is the standout, with strong defensive bonuses across edge, blunt, point, fire, wind, ice, and energy. You can buy the same ring from Xardas, but it is expensive there, so getting one for free through The Stranger is worth the effort. Combined with the 2,550 experience from the quest itself, finishing the full Chromanin chain pays off well for the time invested.
