How to Escape Prison in NTE: All Methods for Hethereau Detention Center

How to Escape Prison in NTE: All Methods for Hethereau Detention Center

Pushing your Warrant Value past one star in Neverness to Everness lands Zero Esper inside the Hethereau Detention Center on the southern island of New Helios. The facility runs on a strict daily routine of meals, sleep, and yard time, and the tutorial only hints at two ways out: serve the sentence or pay a fine. There are actually several more, each tied to specific items, NPCs, and timing windows.

Quick answer: Pay 30,000 Fons at any guard for instant release, or complete one of five named escape routes (Another World, Extreme Sports, Be Like Water, Cheat Death, Into the Chaos) for a Star Weekly magazine and 10,000 Fons on first clear. A separate parkour route along the yard fence unlocks the Breakout Together achievement for 10 Annulith.

Ways out of Hethereau Detention Center

Three categories exist: legitimate release, scripted escape routes, and the parkour shortcut tied to a hidden achievement. Each scripted escape can usually only be cleared once per playthrough, so knowing several is useful if you get arrested again to farm magazines for the prison outfit trade chain.

Pay the fine or serve the sentence

Talking to any guard and choosing "I want to pay the fine" removes you instantly for 30,000 Fons. Fast-travelling out of the detention center using a Wertheimer Tower or Rero Rero Phone Booth also works, but the system automatically deducts the same 30,000 Fons as compensation. Serving the full sentence takes roughly seven in-game days of meals, cleaning duty, and sleep, and gives no extra reward.

Another World: Poster tunnel escape

The earliest escape most players find. A diggable section of bricks sits behind the poster on your cell wall, and you chip through it with stolen cafeteria spoons.

Step 1: During lunch, take a Spoon from the counter on the right side of the cafeteria. Wait until the woman nearby is facing the washing area before grabbing it, or you will get caught.

Step 2: Return to your cell, interact with the poster, and use the spoon on the bricks. One spoon only breaks part of the wall, so repeat the theft and dig on the following day.

Step 3: Once the hole is open, wait until night, interact with the poster again, and crawl through. You drop into the sewer system below the prison.

Step 4: Move through the sewer while staying out of the sweeping security lights. Any contact with a light puts you back in your cell and resets the day. Reach the exit to trigger the escape cutscene.

Extreme Sports: Rooftop rope escape

The most consistent route once you have collected the materials. You build a rope from prison laundry and rappel from the watchtower.

Step 1: During recreation time, find Bed Sheet 1 inside a cardboard box outside the infirmary. Bed Sheet 2 is in the Show-Off Prisoner's cell on the third floor of the right-side wing — talk to him and pick "Warden's looking for you" so he leaves.

Step 2: Collect two Grimy Detention Uniforms. One sits on a bench in the yard area, and another is on the second floor inside a cell. Steal them while the patrolling guard is facing the other direction.

Step 3: Enter the guard office on the ground floor of the cell block and grab the Watchtower Key from the desk when the officer steps away.

Step 4: Sleep through the night. In the morning, call a guard, choose "I'd like to do some work," then "I'd like to do some cleaning," then "Up to the roof."

Step 5: On the rooftop, walk to the fence on the sea side and select "Escape." You climb down the rope and drop into the water, where a boat is waiting to take you back to the city port.

Be Like Water: Acid sewer escape

This one uses corrosive liquid from the infirmary to dissolve a sewer grate in the exercise yard.

Step 1: During recreation, tell a guard "I'm not feeling well..." to get sent to the infirmary. If you have already used that excuse once before, go to the yard, find Tornado, and pick "Stop" during his fight with another prisoner. You will lose, and that also counts as a legitimate infirmary visit.

Step 2: Speak to the Feigning Prisoner lying on a bed. He will distract the doctor for you.

Step 3: While the doctor is occupied, take the Concentrated Disinfectant from the medicine shelf near the storage cabinet.

Step 4: Leave through the left door of the cafeteria into the secondary yard behind the basketball court. Apply the disinfectant to the sewer grate. Nothing visible happens.

Step 5: Return the next day during recreation time. The grate is now corroded. Enter the sewer, dodge the security lights, and reach the exit to escape.

Cheat Death: Fake death escape

The longest setup, built around an NPC trade chain that ends with a paralysis drug called Restinol.

Step 1: Speak with Living Fossil in the right wing. He wants an anime figure.

Step 2: Visit Spider in the left wing and order the Asahi Doll. He tells you to come back the next day.

Step 3: Wait one full in-game day. Return to Spider, collect the doll, and bring it to Living Fossil. He hands over Restinol in exchange.

Step 4: Get yourself to the infirmary using the "I'm not feeling well" line or by losing to Tornado in the yard.

Step 5: Steal the Syringe from the cart while the doctor is looking away. Use Restinol on yourself. Zero collapses, the screen fades, and you wake up on a boat heading off the island.

Into the Chaos: Blackout escape

A stealth route that requires helping a bullied prisoner first.

Step 1: Steal a Spoon from the cafeteria during lunch.

Step 2: Head to the yard and find Tornado harassing another inmate. Pick "Stop" to start a fight. You will lose and get thrown back into your cell — that is intentional.

Step 3: Hermit Crab, the prisoner you helped, appears outside your cell to thank you. End yard time after the conversation.

Step 4: During your next free exploration window, visit Hermit Crab's cell on the third floor and give him the spoon. He triggers a prison-wide blackout.

Step 5: Move through the darkened corridors. Turn on a faucet to pull a guard out of position, then hide in the nearby storage locker. Wait 10–15 seconds for the patrol to pass before stepping out.

Step 6: Enter the work area and pick up the Side Door Key from the desk. Step outside, hide behind trash bins between spotlight sweeps, and use the Side Door Key on the right-hand door.

Step 7: Run to the dock and board the boat to finish the escape. Completing this route awards a Star Weekly magazine, which feeds the Unconventional Attire trade chain.

Fence parkour: Breakout Together achievement

This is a separate route with no items required. It unlocks the Breakout Together secret achievement for 10 Annulith and works in only a few minutes.

Step 1: Finish a cafeteria meal and head into the courtyard during yard time. Press Ctrl to switch to walking mode — running will cause you to slip off the narrow surfaces.

Step 2: In the starting area near the basketball court, double-jump from the low curb onto a closed door. Angle the camera so you land cleanly rather than slamming into the wall above.

Step 3: From the door, climb up the barbed wire onto the top of the fence. Walk slowly along the fence toward the far side of the basketball court.

Step 4: When you hit a brick wall blocking the fence path, jump over it and continue straight. Grab the white ledge further along and pull yourself up over the next spiked section.

Step 5: Drop down outside the prison perimeter. Run to the shoreline and interact with the boat. The escape completes, and the Breakout Together achievement pops with a 10 Annulith reward.

How to confirm the escape worked

Every successful breakout ends with a short cutscene of Zero leaving the island, either on the parked boat at the pier or by being washed ashore near the metropolis. After the cutscene you regain free movement on the mainland, and your Warrant Value resets. The first time you finish any of the five scripted routes, the system mails you a Star Weekly magazine and 10,000 Fons. The fence parkour route instead pops the Breakout Together achievement notification with 10 Annulith.

If a security light touches you, a guard spots you mid-route, or you fall during the fence parkour, the run resets — you are sent back to your cell with the day still counting against your sentence. Movement-based failures (running on the fence, jumping at the wrong angle on the door) are the most common reasons the parkour route fails, while light contact in the sewer is the usual blocker for the tunnel and acid routes.

Choosing a method

For a first arrest with little prep, the fence parkour is the fastest and rewards an achievement. For consistent magazine farming across multiple arrests, the rooftop rope (Extreme Sports) requires the most items but rarely fails once everything is gathered. The poster tunnel (Another World) is the cheapest to set up but takes two real attempts at the wall. Cheat Death is worth doing once for the unique cutscene, and the blackout route is the recommended path if you specifically want the Star Weekly magazine on a fresh run since helping Hermit Crab is required anyway for the prison outfit trade loop.

Paying the 30,000 Fons fine remains the cleanest option late in the game when currency is no longer scarce, but skipping the escapes early on means leaving free magazines and Fons on the table.
